Customer Reviews

Reinforce it - Right out of the boxYes, this is a CHEAP slate, but it will do the job and do the job well. If you go to a Grip shop, you can pay way more for this exact same slate! The order arrived on time, is the correct size for professional shoots, and is better quality than I expected for the price. Everything is right!! If you're in film, this slate will not let you down.IF YOU FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULESReinforce the nuts on the moving parts RIGHT NOW. Tape them, soldier them, spot weld them. Anything you need to do to make sure the bolts aren't loose. If you don't doctor the bolts, they WILL FALL OUT!2: Get WHITE 1/2 inch gaffer tape. Write on the gaffer tape in permanent ink for Production, Director, Camera, and Date. Avoid writing directly on the slate for any field other than ROLL, SCENE, and TAKE.3: Keep it in the box. It will last infinitely longer in the box. But, in the end, you get what you pay for. This will not last forever.4NOT!!! Dry EraseThe white plastic is not a dry erase board. Dry erase markers will write on it, and you can wipe off the marker, but that is where things mess up. A: The ink from the marker smears into the plastic leaving permanent stains. B: If you press hard with a marker (Such as if you are trying to write on a stained section) the marker leaves a trail etched into the plastic, Think like dragging a stick through dirt. C: Not even a strong cleaner like PurplePower Spray is able to clean the the stained parts. With all the negative feedback, why give 2 starts instead of 1?When using the slate as an audio trigger (an audio spike used to sync-up video tracks in editing) this product does work fine, so it is not totally useless.2it's worth the priceI find this to be well worth the price paid. A couple bucks and a little time will improve the performance of this device. For the whiners:Trip to the hardware store for some lock nuts to replace the non lock nuts solved the often referred to problem of this falling apart. A china marker( AKA grease pencil ) works better than a dry erase marker. If the message board falls away from the clapper either gorilla glue or house hold caulk will fix the problem. for Pete's sake this is only a few bucks for a Clapboard.5DO NOT BUY, it does not erase1. Do not BUY!! Does not erase! not with alcohol, you got to use mineral oil (smell like gasoline)you got to scratch with the fingernail to erase text.2. Screws are not properly inserted. you got to tighten up to line up the bar of the slate.1Won 't eraseThis works well the first time you use it. Wipe off the erasable;e whiteboard marker and you will see... every scene you've ever shot will still be there. The material from which the board is made does not allow the marker to wipe away. I tried alcohol - bad choice - that takes off the black graphics fro.m the maker. This is better used as a prop or a gift than a practical clapboard- unless you don't mind the mess and slop of a board that won't erase. I would have a neutral recommendation on this - it totally depends on your use. Yes to gift and props - NO underlined and bolded -= if you plan to use it as an actual working, erasable clapboard. You will likely quickly become frustrated and that can ruin the scene!!5Pretty decent, does the jobPretty decent, does the job, but you do get what you pay for. My biggest complaint is the little magnet on the top of the clapper comes unglued and sticks to the bottom clapper magnet. I haven't lost it yet because it gets stuck to the bottom magnet, but I have had to reglue it several times, obviously with little success. The screws that connect the two clappers come loose often as well, so I usually have to tighten them before every gig. But otherwise, it does the job and again, I get what I paid for. It'll work until I get a timecode slate.4Solid and well made for the priceIt arrived on time, I took it out, and clapped it together in rapid succession.Feels solidly built, not at all flimsy, which is pretty good considering the price. So I clapped it together even harder, for those times when I'll need that noise for all the microphones. No wiggle, no problem, and I like the magnets in the sticks, assuring a crisp *crack* of sound. No clapboard is meant to be kicked around, but by its nature is meant to take abuse. Which means if this thing holds up throughout an entire shoot I'll not only be happy, but at such a low, disposable price, I'll buy several more.4Worth it, but it's not fancy.Clap Clap Clap! This this is pretty simple and pretty cheap, but it works for those of us on a budget. Two things that can and probably will go wrong. I don't know why they have these rounded nuts on the back of the hind holding the arm on, but just go to a hardward store and get some regular ones and some replacement bolts for when these work their way off, because that is going to happen the first day you use it.Test the dry erase marker you want to use on the back. Expo worked fine, then tried to use another brand and it did not want to come off. So when I got home I tried using cleaner and that didn't do anything and then I tried using fingernail polish remover and that removed the paint with the marker. Be sure they marker you are using erases well. For the money, this will be worth it after the first short and the editor is already thankful we had it for this music video.3Erase doesn't EraseSo disappointed in this Clapboard. For one, the lettering is not engraved/etched, but appears to be silk screened. But worse, writing with a proper dry erase marker, it is VERY difficult to erase...and in spite of best efforts, there is still a ghosting of the original letters. And that erasure is with proper white board cleaning liquid. A felt dry marker eraser requires a lot of heavy work just to get to the ghosting phase.Size and content are good; the three screws/nuts were loose. But the overall functionality with clean erase capability is not there. Not Recommended.Updaate (Mar 2016): I tried two different types of "crayon" markers. While both were easier to erase than the dry erase markers, they still left a ghosting image. The best of the "crayon" markers was the "Sharpie Peel-off China Marker" which was easier to erase than a construction crayon marker. Still 1 star!1Doesn't Erase and Comes Apart EasilyThe look of this slate is really nice and it has all of the slots and marks that a really expensive high end one has. However, there are two major issues with this. First, the dry erase board doesn't erase. I left some marks on there for a few days and when I went to erase them nothing would come off. Not with water, soap, or even dray erase cleaner. The only way I was able to get it off was to write over all of the text with a dry erase marker and then erase it. However, it still left marks and everything was still clearly visible. The other issue with this is the screw connecting the top stick to the body. There's one screw with a nut on the other end. The more you move the sticks and clap it, the more the screw comes undone. After about 10 takes the nut comes off and we have to spend 15 minutes looking around for the other half. It's annoying and something that shouldn't happen with something like this.2
