Customer Reviews

Ok Microscope for the price - a few quirksI bought this microscpe after looking over different companies and types of microscopes. This one is used for taking pictures of coins, and its performing up to expectations. There are a few Cons I will note on why the lower rating, so lets get to it.Amscope shipped the product relatively fast. It was packed well, and all parts arrived without issue.I have had this for a while and I am strating to notice a few quirks with the device.1. The overhead lighting knob now making this crackling sound if the light intensity is up all the way. The light flickers wildly, and I think the potentiometer is probably faulty. I use other lighting as my main source of light so to me its not a real bother. For others, I am sure it will make a difference.2. The additional magnifying lens screws in to the existing lens and it can be quite cumbersome to get it to screw in correctly without tilting and skewing the magnification. I don't use that extra magnification all of the time, maybe once every week to 10 days. My concern is that if the threads end up stripping, there will be an additional issue. The trinocular version of the microscope is the best in my opinion. It allows me to put the camera in the 3rd slot and leave it be. In order to use the camera you have a silver slide bar on the left hand eyepiece on the side of the microscope. All you do is pull out that rod, and the left eyepiece diverts its view to the 3rd eyepiece and the camera gets to take the pictures. This microscope does the job in respects to my coin business. It may be a little too strong for coins, so my son and I will invest in a 5x, 10x, 15x, 30x microscope. We will then be able to use the same camera on both microscopes. We also will be able to operate at twice the speed with 2 microscopes vice one and process coins faster and more accurately. The issues I have may be just on my 'scope, but I thought I would mention them. I have NOT contacted Amscope tech support about these as I use alternate lighting and the additonal multiplication lens very infrequently.3Nice 'scope for the money; customer service not so hotThis is a very nice microscope for under $300. It has a very solid build (lots of metal), and a nice heavy base that will not be easily knocked over. All adjustments are smooth and have a nice, tight feel to them. The optics are very good -- amazingly good for the price -- and the adjustment for eye position and focus work as you'd expect from a more expensive professional model. There are two light sources: halogen, but there is also a model that features LED lighting. I chose halogen for the tighter beam focus. Upper and lower lights are controlled by two rotary switches in the base, which allow dimming all the way from barely on to full brightness. The stage over the lower light has switchable covers: clear glass, for transparent subjects, and opaque white or black background, which allows for a choice of contrasts to enhance visibility for light or dark subjects. The "trinocular" feature allows for permanently attaching a digital camera, without sacrificing the stereo-optic direct viewing feature -- very nice. Two things keep it from being a five-star 'scope. One is that the angle of the upper light is not adjustable. Through most of the travel of the head this is not a problem, and the light falls squarely on the middle of the stage. However, when the head is set very low on the post ( for thin specimens) the objective actually partly blocks the light from the stage. If the angle of the upper light could be adjusted, this could be compensated for, but that feature is lacking. For this reason, if you plan to view a lot of small, opaque specimens, I highly recommend also purchasing the LED ring-light for this 'scope:https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JZJO7YC/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1The second thing is that there is no case, just a plastic dust cover. That's OK if it's going to sit on a lab bench all the time, but for home use where the 'scope will be taken out and put away, it leaves something to be desired. For the record, none of the Amscopes I've seen (I own three different models) come with, or have available cases. they have a couple of generic cases available, but they don't seem to fit any of their scopes very well.Hey Amscope: add a good, fitted hard case, and I'll add a star. That said, the 'scope comes packed very well, in a large, form-fitting block of Styrofoam, inside an industrial-strength corrugated cardboard box -- few worries about shipping damage.Overall, a nice, inexpensive stereo-scope, that I'd recommend for kids, serious amateur biologists and geologists, and high-school or freshman college labs. One final note: while I didn't dock the product any points for this, buyers should be aware that Amscope customer service leaves something to be desired. After receiving this scope through Amazon, I ordered a bunch of accessories directly from Amscope. They never got delivered because UPS held them for a week and sent them back -- because Amscope failed to inform me they were shipping by UPS, so I had no way of knowing they had arrived. Inquiries to their customer service were slow in getting responses -- 7-10 days for some of them -- and after six weeks and several email exchanges I still don't have my accessories, or any indication that they have credited my card for the unreceived order.Given this situation, I recommend buying through Amazon, where everything is backed by their A-to-Z guarantee, and NOT directly from Amscope. Word to the wise.4
