    Too Hot to the Touch. For the price I paid (~$45 JUST before Amazon more than doubled it after the number in stock went from four to three), it's excellent optically. For the price I paid, overall build quality is good, however, at the new price, it should be considered adequate. Ergonomically, it's not quite sized properly for an adult of my height (6' 2") and large male adult build. It has a very lightweight base, so it will move around, which is somewhat annoying. The optics make it worthwhile to overlook THOSE problems. Sharp, and two pairs of eyepieces are included. (Note: The screw that must be loosened on each eyetube to change eyepieces is EXTREMELY small. Don't lose it!) I can't decide whether the tiny bit of edge distortion I see is inherent in the microscope's design (look it up), or caused by the eyepieces. It is very minor. Viewing in 3-D changes everything. Our daughter and I love everything we view. Hint: Try sandpaper and Emeroy cloth.Remeber hat this is a serious scientific instrument, not a toy in any way whatsoever, despite its shortcomings. Due to what has enabled us to see, I am now seeking out that "next step" in quality, partially in order to do photomicrography.The following explains my three-star rating, which woul be four-stars if the following weren't so: The "top" and "bottom" illuminators are @#$%-hot!!! Being halogen bulbs, metal parts that are not thermally isolated WILL burn you! It has happened to us several times. LED festoon-style replacements are available (they run "cold"), but there is concern out there that their blue light content may be rich in too much UV light. Check this and the voltage and wattage of the halogens before replacing them. This is not trivial.Bottom Line: This is not worth the new price of ~ $100, due to the ergonomics and only adequate construction, however, I'm not subtracting points for that because price threshold is different for each person. For price and thermal safety, other AmScope and OMAX scopes are better deals. Regarding the halogen illuminators, I will never buy a scope from ANY manufacturer that fails to thermally insulate. My next unit will probably be an OMAX with which I'll use a Dolan-Jenner 180 outboard illuminator. THAT'll get the job done without causing a first-degree burn. 3Great Microscope I just earned my GG from the GIA via distance education and used this microscope for the Gem Identification course. It was easy to use and met all of my needs. I recommend it. 4
