The benefit is that the unit is nice and compact, and it delivers a nice, even and shadowless cold light to the subject. At the highest magnification levels, I still need to use a "kicker" light from a separate light source to keep the light level high enough. At all other magnifications though, it is fully adequate. Here's hoping for good durability.4Great stationary source of illuminationI originally planned to purchase a fiber optic light set for directional, high-intensity light for insect identification but settled on this as a less expensive option for an intermediate step. I have since had this for several years without purchasing the fiber optic set due to the quality of light I have received from this item. The light is easily adjustable from a very low setting to a high intensity for viewing specimens under high magnification. While it would be nice in some circumstances to have directional light for small specimens under maximum magnification, this light source provides incredible illumination for being a stationary light source. I intend to get many more years of use out of this item.5
