Customer Reviews

Breathe of Hope for us AT&T dsl folks I have AT&T DSL(not U-Verse) and the old modem(Motorola 3360) was an awful designed modem forced on us by AT&T for years which I got when I first activated my AT&T account. Tried to get an off brand and they poo-pooed me. Finally I have some relief with this modem/router. It just came today and I followed the instructions loosely with a few non-connections but reset it and re-entered all my info more closely this time. SUCCESS!!I did need to have my AT&T network username:______@att.net was mine. network password:__________Also I knew my system uses PPPOE not the other choices they had as options, so may need to make that call as well or check via your old modem if possible open the browser even if you have no internet connection and type the code on back of the old modem called on mine "Advance Device Configuration" which is a number ex. 192.168.1.000 and that takes me to the modem interface where it has all kinds of info. Not wanting to share to much but just fyi. Don't change stuff but you can glean some very helpful but confusing info there.Cheers and good luck AT&T peoples!!The set up is easy if you pay attention(I had company at the time) but you can always start over if you have an issue.I have as good speed (via Speedtest) on wifi as I did plugged in, so great signal also!!I will amend this if things change but I am always glass half full guy and hope there will be no amending needed. 5Great DSL modem. Works with Windstream. Great Tech Support! Got this to replace a Windstream modem which was constantly disconnecting. (the tech guy who came out to my house told me that since the updated the local C.O. (central office) for my area, the older Windstream modems weren't doing well). Bought this, as the ActionTec is what Windstream is now installing ... buy you have to pay $10/month if you get one from them! That's B.S.! So, I bought this, called their tech support to ask how to put it into "Bridge mode" and its been perfect every since .. no disconnects and better than stated speed on my connection (listed at 12mbps and I'm getting 13mbps). Definitely recommended. Tech support is knowledgeable. 5Defective product, lousy shipping Shipped in no outer box with not even a piece of Scotch tape to keep it sealed. Arrived on my porch clearly advertising to the world what it was. Only way it stayed closed was the cardboard lid folded over with tabs. Got it plugged in and auto setup didn't work. Had to call my ISP to get all the detailed settings. OK, I can deal with that. But that was only the start. It continually dropped connectivity every 5-15 minutes, both with the outside world and from my computer to the modem. As recommended by the company's website, I pushed the latest firmware version. Got a "success" message but power light turned red and it wouldn't work at all in any way no matter what. Waited then power cycled it multiple times, and even tried resetting it several times. Still nothing but a solid red light. Called the company customer support, waited 20 minuted to talk to someone with such an accent I could barely understand them. After 30 minutes of trying everything on their checklist they confirmed the unit was indeed dead and I'd have to get Amazon to replace it. I love Amazon for their customer support and willingness to replace it, but this product has terrible quality control from the factory. 1For Centurylink DSL, you may need to do manual setup. I got this modem as a backup to the Westell that Centurylink provided when I signed up several years ago. I have been using this for a few days now, and have noticed a few differences between the two.First a little about the setup: For quick setup, you need a PPPoe Username and Password, which you can get from your provider. When I called, Centurylink explained my connection uses a different method, so I had to go through the manual setup (and set up WAN to use DHCP, and enter the VPI/VCI numbers provided by centurylink). There were only a few fields I had to fill in, and I was connected in about 10 minutes -- but the support person warned that if she couldn't help me, I may have to pay for tech support, since this modem is not "officially" supported by Centurylink. So you may want to call ahead.Wireless setup was simple (wifi name and password), and I'm happy with the range of the wireless -- I noticed an improvement over my old modem. However, my internet connection drops out a couple times a day (wired and wireless) -- something that did not happen with my old modem. I haven't had time to troubleshoot this yet, but that's the reason I'm removing a star. 4Best Modem I Ever Owned Great product, saved me a lot of money. I have DSL at my country house (only available service). When my Provider modem died recently, I was told they no longer sell modems, only rent them for $11/month. I could buy 2 or 3 DSL modems per year for that price. So I took a chance and purchased this modem, based on their claim that they worked with my Provider's service. So glad I did. Plugged this in, connected my tablet to it, answered like 5 on screen questions, and it set itself up! Painless, hassle free, reliable unit! What a great product. Highly recommend this modem. 5Works great BUT check the SECURITY settings! I bought this to replace an aging Actiontec GT701D modem, since this newer GT784WN is the current modem my ISP (TDS) provides for my 5Mbps DSL line. I'm in the boonies so I'm lucky to get 5Mbps downloads; my speed went down recently so I hoped the newer modem might give me a boost. It did maybe a little, so I'm keeping it. Note: the GT784WN is spec'd to support ADSL2+ with speeds up to 24 Mbps downstream, if you can get that speed. ALSO, this modem/router is more up-to-date technology, hence more supportable by your ISP.BUT ONE THING: the DEFAULT GT784WN settings as delivered exposed my home LAN to intrusion/hacking due to inadequate firewall settings. SO... I recommend using the GT784WN's web page access menu to lock things up better. See pictures 1 & 2 and use the Advanced Setup button, then, under Security, click on Firewall. There, click on ENABLE Stealth Mode, AND choose Firewall Security Level MEDIUM or HIGH (not low or Nat only), and finally don't forget to click SAVE at the bottom of the page. Then see pictures 3 & 4 and again under Security, click on UPnP. There, set the UPnP state to DISABLE and click SAVE. (I periodically go back and LOOK at these same settings to make sure they stick and haven't been defaulted by a modem reset, etc.)These more secure settings should give you much better protection than the DEFAULTS as shipped. For more info, use a website (like Gibson Research Corp) where you can query your own home LAN and see if it's secure, OR NOT.NOTE: making your modem more secure could "break" some apps on your LAN, if so, you can always go back to the GT784WN defaults: Stealth Disabled, NAT Only Firewall Security Level, and UPnP Enabled... but I wouldn't. You can be secure AND fine tune the protection to allow specific apps, but you need to research how to do that safely. And ALWAYS secure your LAN and WiFi with encryption and strong passwords (not the defaults)! Be forewarned. 4Trick w/ATT, but looking good So far so good!! Just set this up last night. I've had an old Actiontec Modem/Router for 8 years and decided to "upgrade" finally. Always dread it because I know there will be technical problems! Note first that I have ATT DSL and it had been running VERY slow lately. Wasn't sure if it was my service or my modem, so finally bit the bullet and bought this model after reading reviews. I had hoped to set it up myself without having to call ATT since I would rather perform my own root canal than talk to their customer service.Set up was actually very easy! I followed the quick start up guide and the only mistake I made was putting in the wrong username and password. I had to dig that up from old paperwork I kept from the last excruciating phone call with ATT. You must use your DSL username and password. After that, I was connected and up and running! My connection speeds are much better now throughout the house and I can finally get Netflix to run on my big TV in the living room!! My old router just didn't have the range. I'll update if things turn, but looks good so far. 4Works great Got this to replace a Linksys modem/router that was starting to have problems. This modem was super easy to set up on Centurylink. Auto configuration was very smooth. It has better range than previous modem. It covers my whole house without the need of another access point or range extender. Had it for over a month now and have not had any issues. Very pleased. This is an adsl2+ modem so make that's the type you need for your provider before you buy. 5Works GREAT...for about a day I've always had a separate modem and router, and I tend to keep whatever I have until it no longer works. I don't upgrade just because there's something newer and "better" out there. Recently my modem went out and I started searching for DSL modems. There are unbelievably few choices! Two years ago I bought one for less than $30 dollars. It worked great until last weekend. I thought I could buy another, but they were no longer available. This Actiontec modem/router combo was the only real option for me. I'm a cheapskate, and to tell the truth this seemed a little pricey considering I have had HORRIBLE luck with the modem/router combos in the past.I got set the Actiontec up in just a minute or two, most of that was taking the existing hardware out of the way. And in literally less than a minute, I had my internet up and going. This way by far, the easiest I have EVER set up a modem or router...or combo. It was super simple! Even if you know NOTHING about setting stuff up, as long as you have your log-in and password from your ISP- this is super, super easy.My ISP recently quit selling modems, etc and now just rent them out at $9.99/month...plus all the taxes. If this modem/router lasts, it will save me lots of money just in one year. I'll update this review if I have any problems.UPDATE: 10/3/2018My first Actiontec modem/router lasted literally 3 days. It worked pretty well for two days. The third, it started "timing out" for lack of a better description. I was working on the computer the first time this happened and suddenly I didn't have internet access. Turning the power off and then on and it seemed to fix it. But then 2 hours later, it did the same thing only this time I was watching something on my Kindle. Same procedure fixed it. It lasted for a whole 30 minutes. After that, it didn't matter what I did, completely resetting it unplugging and replugging everything, restarting my computer. I thought maybe I had just gotten a defective one, so I ordered a replacement. I got it last night and already, it is doing the same thing. Oh, and Actiontec customer service is a joke....if you can understand them at all, they just want you to push the reset button. Finally, I was told that the problem would be sent to their IT department and they would call me back. Guess who never received a phone call telling me how to magically fix this?? 1Don't buy! These were manufactured in 2012. I bought two (one for my mom and one for me). I was able to connect both of them at my Mom's place, but they would lose Internet connection and have to be rebooted at least every three days. I tried to connect both of them via Centurylink DSL, and neither would connect. I finally had a tech out to the house from Century Link. He worked on the line and said there was DSL there, but neither unit would connect. The tech said they were old and needed software updating. So, I bought two different wireless modems from CenturyLink. They both connected immediately and were way faster than either of these dinosaurs Amazon sold me. I can see why they were so slow at my Mom's house. Both of them were manufactured in 2012 which makes them really old! Technology has changed a lot in six years! Don't buy them!!! 1
