The shank is actually just slightly more than 1/4-inch in diameter. Consequently, neither of the two locks I purchased fit the bulkhead locking mechanisms inside the moving trailer being used to transport our household goods across the country. The guidelines from the transport company specify lock shanks up to 1/4-inch in diameter. Had to purchase two less-secure locks in order to seal the bulkhead.The quality of the locks appear okay, however. 4Nice for the gym More secure than a combination lock. You have to carry the key with you, though. 5
