Customer Reviews

Creased with laughter! This is book 1 of a fantastic comedy thriller series, written by a British author. Side-splittingly funny, great characters, fab plot... I enjoyed the first one so much that I read all the rest in the series!! I would highly recommend this, especially if you are a cat or dog lover!!5I loved the cat and dog chaptersI bought the rest of the books in the series as soon as I could. I loved the cat and dog chapters.5An enjoyable and laugh-out-loud funny readI downloaded this book to my Kindle on the strength of the synopsis and recommendations from friends, and then I promptly forgot about it. I've been making a point to go back to read the earliest books I downloaded. I'm not much of a cat person, so when A Load of Old Bones started out with "The Cat's Memoir" in Maurice's voice, I didn't know how far I would be able to read. That uncertainty held until chapter three, "The Dog's Diary." When I read the very first thing Bouncer the dog said, I burst into laughter. This book reminds me of the old "Columbo" television series when you knew the identity of the killer and all you had to do was sit back and watch the detective put all the clues together to catch him. What made me a bit uneasy is how quickly I accepted Oughterard killing a woman and covering it up. It undoubtedly has a lot to do with the fact that the dreaded Mrs. F. is the type of person who makes most of those who meet her want to strangle her.As a fan of Spencer Quinn's Chet and Bernie mysteries, I have no problem with dogs (and the occasional cat) speaking to me, but what surprised me was how harmoniously the voices of Oughterard, Bouncer and Maurice blended together. Between the three of them, a reader gets the complete picture, and watching these two animals come to the aid of the vicar is laugh-out-loud funny. There is very little interplay between the characters in A Load of Old Bones. You're going to spend most of your time in the heads of a vicar, a dog, and a cat. I had a delightful time there; however, I don't think I want to repeat the experience. There are other books in this series, which came as no surprise because there was a strong foreshadowing of blackmail at the end, but I don't think I'd find another visit to Molehill to be nearly as much fun. I'd rather stop with this book and keep the good memories and the smile on my face.(Purchased a Kindle edition of this book that is no longer available on Amazon.)4How do a dog and a cat think?Liked the consept so much that I have read all to. date.5Not sure about it but I warmed up to the story.I wasn't too sure I was going to like A Load of Old Bones. The language of some of the narrators (the Reverend, the dog and the cat) was different until I realized that if I read this book like I do a P.G. Woodhouse story, then I started to enjoy it more. I was not real happy with what he does but the characterizations of all of all of the players was a joy to behold. I enjoyed this book (I paid less then $2.00) but will have to bide my time to to and think about paying almost $10.00 for any of the other installments.4Not the bestThe writing is very good, great use of voice for the different characters. But the premise is unbelievable and weak. The murder was committed for a weak reason, and was actually committed very unrealistically. (At least, as far as what i have read in other books!)3Lovely characters, wonderful taleI absolutely adored this book with its unusual plot line seen from the sides of the vicar, the cat and dog. It is original , hilarious, and not really as corny as it sounds. I will be looking for all the sequels by Suzette Hill to keep me amused these next months. She really has a way with words.5A nice respiteA vicar, a cat, and a dog walk into a bar... Not really but they do walk into a murder--with hilarious results. I'll be reading the others in this series. Maurice, Bouncer, and F.O. deserve another visit or two or three. Their three points of view are unique and funny. A good respite from dark mysteries.4If you liked The Trouble With Harry - you'll probably enjoy this book!!Warning NOT your typical English village mystery & not a cutesy pet mystery. You know who murdered who, how and why - it's the getting away with it, that's the tale here. The vicar could be considered the typical bumbling village vicar, but here you know it's because he's just not very smart or very good at anything much and he's well aware of it himself. The cat and the dog who offer their views and opinions through out the book are not your typical sweet, adoring pets with all knowing wisdom. They are both actually very believable in their thought processes and personalities and in the ways they interact with the humans they decide to live with. I'm an animal lover and we have several dogs and cats, all rescues, all the time, but do not find myself a fan of the cute unanimal like pets presented as main characters in many books. Other than LJ Braun's cats - they're fun reads too. This is a bit dryer and perhaps more real than those, but the entertainment level is equal if not better than! And yes, would love to read the second in the series, and will when, to be perfectly honest, it fits into my budget. Fun reads often have to go on waiting lists - when you read 2 or more a week, you have to budget, or this old broad does! LOL. I liked this book - a bit quirky with some not so subtle undertones, at least to me, of digs at the village church system in England. Could never really decide if it felt dated or not - sometimes it did, but on the whole could be present as easily as not.4Interesting pet protagonistsSuzette A. Hill's A Load of Old Bones is not a traditional murder mystery, which usually gives a little background, the discovery of a body, and the attempt by the detective/police to identify the killer. It is in the Columbo format, in which we know who commits the murder, why and how, and the suspense is generated by whether the police can pin it on him. Reverend Francis Oughterard is so bumbling that discovery seems inevitable; in fact, it is astonishing that he manages to murder the unspeakable Mrs. Elizabeth Fotherington in the first place. However, he has help from two unlikely accomplices--Maurice, the deceased's cat, and Bouncer, the neighbor's dog who discovers the body. Both animals lose their owners, both need a new home, and Maurice decides that the vicar will be an acceptable substitute for them both. Because they do not want to be dislocated again, they protect him.I steer clear of the pet detective genre because the books are usually too cutesy-poo and often not very well written. A Load of Old Bones is first person narration, moving between Maurice, Bouncer, and the vicar. Ms. Hill gives each a distinctive voice. Maurice and Bouncer in some ways are more interesting than Reverend Oughterard; both are dynamic characters, especially Bouncer. Ms. Hill handles exposition well. She gives the information we need without its becoming cloying. She uses humor and moves the plot briskly along despite the shifts in narrator. The ending makes it clear that there are sequel(s) in store. I look forward to them eagerly.5
