Description

A town of wide-open prairies and endless skies, Goodlands, North Dakota, seemed the perfect place to farm and raise a family - until four years without rain brought the town to its knees. Now darkness has descended on Goodlands: Fires are singeing the already parched land, suspicious crimes are on the rise, and an ever-increasing sense of doom is enveloping the town. Tom Keatley has pulled rain from the sky in town after arid town. A loner, a drifter, Tom is a rainmaker, the stuff of myth. But to Karen Grange, Goodlands` beleagured mortgage lender, Tom is her only hope to save the dying town. For Tom Keatley, inextricably drawn to Goodlands and to Karen, the storm is just beginning. Because beneath the hard, cracked earth is a shattering secret that only he can uncover. And in the hot, dry air, a sinister force is gathering strength, ready to wage a war for the soul of Goodlands.

Customer Reviews

Miss You Susie!Susie Maloney should get busy and write me some more books! Love her! 5Fast DeliveryAwesome 5Old friend revisitedI originally read this book when it was first published years ago. I never forgot it and, when I ran across a copy recently, grabbed it up to visit once again.Unfortunately, like many fond memories revisited, this book failed to live up to my recollection. The story stayed in my mind for years because of the originality of its premise, but the writing quality isn't as spectacular as I recall. Either that, or my taste has been educated and elevated over the last several years.Still, it's a decent workmanlike genre novel: a romantic thriller with supernatural overtones, efficiently plotted and relatively well-executed for its kind. Karen the banker and Tom the rainmaker are sympathetic characters, if somewhat underdeveloped. The other town residents barely rise above two-dimensionality but serve their purpose in advancing the story. The loose ends, with one glaring exception, tie up neatly. (The "town secret" is the one gaping hole in the plot never resolved to my satisfaction.)If you're looking for great literature, read To Kill A Mockingbird. If you want an enjoyable way to give your brain a rest and kill a few hours, read this. 3A very good read!I chose this book because somewhere I read it was reminiscent of early Stephen King. The characters were full, and you really were interested in the outcome of all. I also liked the sexual tension of the novel, which is nice in this genre as I detest romance novels. It was not black and white, but shades of gray, which life really is.This is one that I had to turn the pages to find for what would happen next. Very enjoyable. Checked it out from library, and then ordered my own copy to keep and share with those who like the same thing as I do. 4A Fresh Story with an Unexpected Plot That Crosses GenresIf you are like me, you will find this novel unlike any other that you have read before. The jacket copy made me think the book was about the "supernatural" powers of a rainmaker. Actually, this is just one facet of this jewel of a novel. Ms. Moloney has actually combined several novellas together into one novel. I found that approach to be fascinating to watch.Goodlands, North Dakota has a most unusual problem. It hasn't rained in four years. Since this is a farming community without irrigation, that means financial ruin for everyone. A rainmaker is on his way there. Can he help? The four novellas that intersect to create this novel also encompass a horror tale, a love story, and tale of the social dynamics of small-town life on the prairies.Of the four novellas, I think most people will find the horror tale to be the least effective one. To me, the love story was also subpar. Those are the reasons why I graded the book down by two stars. The other two novellas are clearly five star efforts. I would, however, recommend against reading this book if you are very sensitive to the quality of the horror writing in a book.I thought the character of Tom Keatley, the rainmaker, was well developed and interesting. What would someone be like whose main skill in life is bringing the rain? By comparison, many of the other characters are little more than names on a page. There is a little bit of an unexplained time warp in the novel that bothered me. Many of the opinions and attitudes were much more reminiscent of 1969 than the current time. But I could see no particular reason for that shift. After you have read this book, think a little about what it means to have a talent that others cannot understand. How would you represent yourself? For example, what if you could put out fires with your mind? You would want to help by using that talent, but if you told people that you could do this they might think you a bit weird . . . or worse!See the potential for new life in any parched circumstance! 3Rain RainThis is my first Moloney read and I am impressed .The story starts out so relaxing in a fictional town of Goodlands North Dakota . A small town that most would say is a nice place to farm and raise a family but then Goodlands hasn't had any rain for 4 yrs and the farmers are concerned and then Tom (a drifter ) comes to town and his first stop is a bar where he meets these guys and makes a $50 wager with them that he can make it rain ............ In away the author brings Tom to life in the novel and with his ways of trying to congure up the rain it is so relaxing like you are right there on that field next to him and feel the presence of the rain just beyond grasp , so real you can almost smell the rain and the fresh air . A very nice relaxing read and I give this author and the plot of the story 5* . I will read more by Moloney . 5I vote for a re-writeI have never had such mixed emotions about a book before. It was a "skimmer" all right. In fact, I skipped pages at a time but the book still held me like an iron fist. The author seemed to go off on tangents that departed so completely from the story line that I wanted to throw the book against the wall. So why was I compelled to read this book in two days?..... because the plot just wouldn't let me walk away from it. The plot, the characters and the expectations of great things had me picking this book up with every spare minute I could muster. I liked the mysterious rainmaker and his supernatural gift and I think his character had great promise. Unfortunately, the book closed with a whimper leaving the hint of a sequel. If there is a sequel forthcoming, I might buy it but not before I read a enough to know if the book carries the same style of writing tangents that were so frustrating in this book. For the most part, I liked this book because the author definitely has talent and I think she can deliver the goods with a little help. This book had a lot of potential so I am of the opinion that it's the editor who should be hung out to dry, not the author. This could have been an outstanding read had wandering thoughts been traded for more on the characters and closure on the story line. Forget the sequel. I vote for a re-write. 3Seriously good stuff! Brilliantly realized.I ve always been a fan of Susie Moloney, ever since I picked up The Dwelling on a whim after reading about her in a copy of Maclean s magazine. The Dry Spell is a remarkable, and truly unique novel. Moloney writes beautiful and totally absorbing prose. She gets inside the characters to a degree I don t often see. A small-town setting, Goodlands, North Dakota, is in trouble. A predominant farming community with no rain in a very long time. Karen Grange has been assigned to the local branch of the bank she works for, sort of as a punishment for being fiscally irresponsible. But of late, her job has become mostly foreclosing on her friends and neighbours. Unlike most bankers, Karen DOES care, and so calls on Tom Keatley, a rainmaker , to help out. Tom can make rain with very little effort (the process is really cool) and takes the job. But there s a snag another preternatural power has a hold over the town. Seriously good stuff! Brilliantly realized. I friggin love Moloney s style and storytelling abilities. 5Great read!Flew through this - a romantic thriller at its finest. Highly recommend! 5An author to watch.I have become a fan of Ken Krekeler. The art in this book, as well as in his others, is great and the story is generally interesting. The only problem I have with it is that it is, in my opinion, a few hairs to short. I know Krekeler has done kick starters in the past and wonder if the books length was due in part to financial reasons. The story develops well but ends a bit to suddenly and leaves you wanting more, which there is no promise or mention of. I will say that if you just want a fun single read this one works better then his other, 'The Colodin Project', which was great but DEFINITELY NOT meant to be the single volume it has turned out to be. Im still hoping he will pick it back up. All in all definitely still worth the price though. 4
