Customer Reviews

Good for light duty grinding GF bought me an angle grinder for Xmas and insisted I get a face shield after I had a tiny grinding disc on my Dremel break and strike me in the cheek, scratching me up a bit. Selected this unit because I've usually heard good things about 3M PPE, and my hard hat at work is a 3M full brim hat with a nearly identical ratcheting system. Since that one could fit my large noggin, figured this would too, which it does. The actual shield portion is removable and replaceable if need be. Provides full face protection, along with some of the neck, without being too in the way if you move your head around. I also use a knotted wire wheel on my grinder, which has a tendency to fling wires as they work loose (had them go through coveralls + two shirts), but they haven't scratched the face shield at all. 5Quick adjustments are worth the couple extra bucks. I have 3 face shields in my fab shop. This one is mine. The other two have the studs and buttons to adjust the strap. They are for everyone else. They all use the same shield insert but I love the ratchet adjustment. Most of the time if it's a little loose it's not a big deal. But sometimes you're under a trailer with a 9" grinder and just can't afford for your face shield to slip or move around. That's when I'll crank this headgear down to be uncomfortably tight, and back to normal when that task is over. Eyeballs intact. 5Perfect for grinding I use this primarily for grinding steel and I am confident that this will continue to protect my face when things inevitably fly in that direction. The polycarbonate lens has taken all sorts of abuse from flying sparks and debris and has held up well. Actually the lens is thick enough (and surprisingly scratch resistant) that I imagine it could take a lot more than what I've thrown at it.The headband is adjustable enough and the shield large enough that pretty much everyone should be alright fit-wise. I wear this with bulky safety goggles and sometimes a half-mask respirator without a problem. I'm also able to wear big earmuff-style hearing protection at the same time too. 5Comfortable and good protection! I do a lot of grinding/cutting and while I wear safety glasses, I found that they weren't providing the protection I needed and tended to get in the way when wearing a mask so I wasn't breathing fine aluminum particles. So I picked this up and I've been using it and it's really solved the problems of sparks and small bits of material flying everywhere. It's also pretty comfortable to wear because it's pretty adjustable- head diameter is a simple knob which works great, but how high it sits on your head is done via a plastic adjuster much like those on cheap baseball caps. The shield easily is raised for those times you want to inspect something close or have a quick drink/etc.And unlike my safety glasses, the shield doesn't get as fogged up as easily, which is nice.Honestly, the only negative about this is two things:1. The shield has to be installed and it's a PITA to do. I was really afraid of breaking something, but it did finally go in. Not sure why it has to be _that_ difficult, but it's something to pay attention to. Definitely pay attention and make sure you have everything lined up or you can easily break it.2. Due to the design, it does make wearing over the head ear protection more difficult. For short period use, I generally end up placing the band behind my head and for longer sessions I'll wear in-ear protection. Not sure I'd be willing to pay extra for integrated hearing protection which would work better, but if you're using this a lot it's something to consider. For hobby use like mine, it's fine. 4I wanted something 3M rated for reliability and protection and this is a nice quality shield with the features I looked for This is a review of the 3M Ratchet Headgear H8A Head and Face Protector.Summary Doing work with a grinder leaves a face shield a must. I wanted something 3M rated for reliability and protection and this is a nice quality shield with the features I looked for. This uses a WP96 Polycarbonate face shield which measures 9 wide by 14.25 tall. The shield further meets requirements for ANSI Z87.1 2010. In simple terms, this just means it is high impact and meets certain industry standards for those who have jobs that require same.To install the shield, simply align the side shield cut outs to match the interior side mounts and when you pull the shield into a vertical position, the front latch will lock into place.**Which makes this a nice headset as you can then just replace the face shield if it becomes damaged or used to a point you need to replace. (Replacement shields I have seen as low as $5 to $10.The fit was great on my medium sized head and was comfortable. I like how it uses a ratchet mechanism which makes for quick easy adjustments. Ratchet has 13 positions to rotate and adjust with. The upper headrest once on allows for an easy adjustment of the shield. (Five positions.)Downfalls would entail the helmet lacking padding on the read of the head support system and pricing was a little on the high side when compared to similar masks with same ratings.Note Sounds gross, however, if you use your spit and rub the interior of the mask before using, it will eliminate the potential fog up from your breath. Or you can use special products designed to do this. Mine does not seem to fog up to a point of being a problem unless I begin getting a good workout going with the task at hand. 4The best for me. I have an average to average-large head, depending on the sizing chart you look at.This is by far the most comfortable face shield I've used, to the point I almost forget it's on.There's almost no distortion at all, it's crystal clear, and while it does fog slightly I find breathing though my nose eliminates it almost entirely.I can't recommend this enough, A++Things to note: Polycarbonate is tough stuff, but it isn't immune to scratches. I don't use my shirt, and I definitely don't use a work-gloved hand to wipe it off. Use some cheap automotive micro-fiber towels and a light touch to clean it off and things should go fine. The shields are replaceable. To assemble, take note of the retention clips and line up the holes. Use a moderate-firm pressure and it should pop right in.(If this seems obvious? You might be surprised. I've seen several asking about these topics.) 5How did 3M manage to screw this up? How did they manage to screw this up? It has a nice sturdy shield, top, and bands - it even looks good!. Why the one star review? I knew the moment I put this on that the design of this thing was junk. I've had an old green one from Home Depot for years and thought I'd upgrade even though I never had a problem with it. The moment I put this thing on it was resting on my nose and about a quarter inch from my eyes, the shield practically rests on your face - my old one has a good inch of room from my face to the mask. I have a normal sized head. I thought - "hey, there must be some adjustment here" - but nope. You can only adjust the top band that is used to tension the head band. You can make it higher or lower on, but you can't make it further from your face. The knobs used to tighten the tilt of the mask don't work. So basically, you have a nice looking mask with high quality materials that rests on your nose and will touch your eyelashes and lips if you move your head up and down. Ifif you tilt it up, the moment you look down it goes back on to your nose. Look elsewhere. 1- I recommended for the hobbyist and home DIYers without hesitation This 3M face shield is of high quality regardless of what some of these reviews say. Many times folks post on the wrong product review. I was sure when I ordered this from all the negativism and was prepared to return it, but it arrived in short order (amazon prime) less than 2 days and it is a quality 3M product as per the following description: 3M Ratchet Headgear H8A, Head and Face Protection 82783-00000, with 3M Clear Polycarbonate Faceshield -or- (3M Ratchet Headgear H8A, Head and Face - Style:82783). Follow the instructions on the packages and it snaps together without issue; it is simple and straight forward. Some say there is a protective coating to peel off but there is none on the one I received AND it doesn't not appear to be used as some claim. - Bill Mac Lennan, South Texas. - I recommended for the hobbyist and home DIYers without hesitation. 5Very good value - broke in a minor way after 5 years' heavy use As the title indicates, I'm very satisfied with this face shield - it's durable, well-designed, and the price is right. I'm writing this review because finally, after 5 years' use (using it at least 3 times monthly on my small lathe), one of the screws that help tension the shield snapped when I overtorqued it. I was able easily to find another screw (metal this time - the original screw was plastic!) to replace the broken part and restore functionality.Yes, things have hit this face shield! But they've never left a permanent mark, and it's easy to wipe clean of wax, oil, and dust while you're working. 4Not all the parts are there I ordered this product and had to return it because there was no main shield only the top and the chin guard. I sent it back and it came today this is the second one and I open the package and again there is only the top and the chin guard. I don't know how to handle it other than to send it back and be done. 1
