Customer Reviews

Pleased so far. As near as I can tell the cheapest of in the ear hearing protection. Also they re made by a well known brand (Peltor/3M) that makes over the ear protection that I ve used and was happy with. They worked fine for my purposes which was range shooting & training (I m sure Delta Force uses something better, lol). Set at low I can get two 8 hour days in a row out of them so battery life good. Possibly longer battery life but I didn t try past the two 8 hour days. On high it s probably less. Initially I found they would squeal intermittently but I then discovered how to stop that. If they are not pressed well into the ear canal and not sealed off from out side environment they will squeal. That solved I thought they were good for the money. The storage case is fairly compact and sturdy and also is the charging case. The case will hold 3 AA batteries for charging or a USB plug can be used. I ve used them so far for 6 full 8 hour days of training. Controls are easy to use- ie on/off and hi/low on same button. I m pleased with them to date. If that changes I ll reassess and make another review. 4A must for the construction field. I am 36 years old and have developed tinnitus since about 5 months ago. I've been living with tinnitus caused by 17 years of working in the construction field using hammers, impact drills, pneumatic staplers, multimac vibration cutting tools, skilsaws, palm sanders, wet tile saws, gunpowder powered concrete anchoring systems, and grinders. I know that my tinnitus will never go away. These protective plugs are a way for me to avoid further damage. They allow me to communicate with coworkers while protecting my already damaged hearing. The built in lithium batteries last a whole 8 hour shift and a half. I charge them when i get home. To anyone reading this who is exposed to loud noise in their line of work please invest in these or something similar to avoid having to live with tinnitus. 5Great indoors, but outside use is limited to calm weather. Using the foam tips at an indoor range I initially thought these were brilliant. Moving outdoors with them on a windy day was a frustrating experience. These need better protection from wind to be worth the asking price. They are comfortable and they worked very well indoors. Perhaps if that's your intended use environment you'll be very happy with these. 3Work great, very pleased. I like the electronic ear plugs. They work just like they're supposed to. The first time I tried them for a cowboy match I used the small add on plugs as they seemed to fit well but after a couple of hours they were not blocking as much noise. The next cowboy match I used the medium plugs and they worked great. It is great to be able to hear what people are saying yet when a gun fires it mutes the blast. In cowboy matches we shoot metal targets and the ear plugs mute the shot yet I can hear the bullet hit the target. Its that fast. The ear plugs seem to me to amplify higher pitch sounds like working the action on a lever action rifle more than normal. This may just be my 68-year-old ears. 5Very expensive but decent ear pro These work okay. They definitely don't amplify sound that well, especially people talking. The sound of digging through an ammo can or cycling the action comes through very loud but people talking is rather quiet. As for actual hearing protection they work decently. Well enough I can wear them for an 8 hour day with myself and 15 others going through about 500 rounds each and not having any ear ringing or anything. Comfort wise they're okay, after a couple hours they become a little uncomfortable but not too bad that you cant deal with it. I usually take them out for a few minutes while reloading mags and what not to give my ears a break. The best quality is that they are not in the way of anything. When you should a rifle, roll on the ground dive jump run and whatever else you may do they stay put and out of the way which is the main reason I kept them. They were pretty expensive and if I didnt frequently take classes where im very active and moving a lot I would have returned them. If I was to just be going to a range sitting at a bench and shooting a target I'd prefer my over ear ones that were about 10x less money and more comfortable. 3Get the Skull Screw Foam Tips I have a number of ear muff, ear plug and other hearing protection and I like these 3M active ear plugs the best out of all them. The ear muffs work fine, but get in the way when shooting rifle. I tried the Walker's ones that have ear buds that go to an around-the-neck system, but those just don't stay in my ears well. With the foam tips, these really stay in my ears and isolate noise very well.It is really worth it to get the Skull Screw foam tips if you are using these for shooting. I put the TEP-100's in my ears without turning them on and you can't hear squat, so the foam tips are worth the extra $ IMO.Turning the units on, I was surprised how well I could hear and that it clamps down noises proportionally. In the Walkers and other active ear protection, it is a very abrupt cutoff. With these, it keeps everything at roughly the same volume level so you can hear everything, but it's kept to a very comfortable level.I can see what the other reviewer has said about it being a little difficult to determine directionality of sounds with these. When you hear normally, if a sound originates from your right, you can tell where it comes from because your brain can tell that it is louder in your right ear than your left. The microphones on these earplugs are quite sensitive and they try to keep everything at a constant level. So the slight limitation with these is that if a sound originates on your right, the microphone in your left ear still picks up the sound and amplifies it. So, all noises sound kind of like they are all around you. You can hear things quite well, but it was not that easy to tell which direction it comes from. I could hear people talking 50 yards away.I think taking stars off for that is a bit harsh. While these are not cheap, they are not the most expensive either and perform quite well and the charging case is compact, robust and well-designed.Perhaps my only minor nitpick is that the small rubber cap that covers the USB charging port has a somewhat short tether that comes out rather easily, but you can just shove it back in and just remember to not pull in it too hard.Really like these a lot. They provide the noise protection I need while allowing me to hear things and not get in the way of shooting long guns. 5I was wishing for better protection. Spotty left speaker, constantly crackles in and out. Even shooting a .308 from prone, outside, I felt there was simply too much percussion blast sound allowed into my ears. I even had the grey skull screws, which claim a -30dB reduction (no way in h@ll that is accurate). For as much as these cost, I was wishing for better protection. 3They work all day!! These work great. They have some draw backs. Sound quality is okay at best. Because of the way they mute loud noises its hard to hear other people talking to you while others are shooting. It mutes the sound vs just lowering it. I don't have this problem with my Howard's over the ear protection. I used these during a 3 day Carbine class. It was hot. While everyone else was constantly wiping sweet off and constantly adjusting their regular ear muffs mine were perfectly comfortable. These are very light. I only used them with the Skull Screws which is the best way to go. (30db)They lasted all day (over 8 hrs). I have read the other review about them only lasting 3 hrs. Unfortunately this is from people that do not read the instructions. They will start beeping at you every 3 hours. This is a time-out feature in case you forget to turn them off. All you have to do is press the button and your good for another 3hr. The case is very well made. I have no problem with it beating around in my range bag. These are my go to when shooting USPSA.(especially during the summer). 4A poor option for hunting and useless as a "tactical earplug". Great for the range though! I shoot a lot (several hundred to several thousand rounds per month). Most of this is at the shooting range, but I also hunt quite a bit. I bought these due to the great reviews, and because I wanted some hearing protection that could be used while hunting. As a hunter and an Iraq war combat veteran, I cannot recommend these for the field (hunting or tactical). I hunt several times per week during open seasons and I have led dozens of combat patrols in hostile environments. The audio quality is just not up to the task here.In order to be useful in the field, hearing amplification needs to have extremely high sound quality and preserve your ability to detect the direction sound is coming from. These don't do that. The sound quality is OK, but not great, and VERY affected by wind. The left/right earpieces are identical so the sound hole is in the front on the right, but in the back on the left. This leads to the left ear always sounding a little muffled and severely impairs auditory depth/direction perception. Additionally, there is a very small (but perceptible) delay in sound being relayed through these. Try knocking on something while wearing them - The sound doesn't quite line up with the knock. All of these factors make these unusable for most types of serious hunting. Trying to use these in a combat situation would be downright dangerous - They aren't even close to the necessary functional level to actually improve your ability to detect enemy combatants, and I would definitely not trust my life to these. At the range, these are great! They block enough sound (with the grey foam tips) to be very effective hearing protection, and still allow you to hear what is going on around you. Blocking all sound, all the time, can be a safety hazard when multiple people are moving around and shooting in close proximity. The charging case is also awesome! The ability to charge the internal batteries with the case (which takes AAs) is very useful. You can charge them up in the car on the way to the range, and they last just long enough for a good range session.Bottom line: These would get 5 stars for range performance, but are a poor option for hunting and useless as a "tactical earplug". 3Works with a caveat... I work as an instructor in an automotive shop with 18 bays as a community college, and one of the things I needed to find was a form of hearing protection that would both block out momentary loud sounds (such as air hammers and impact wrenches) while still allowing me to dialogue with my students. Unfortunately, trying to fiddle around with foam earplugs became too much of a hassle, since my hands were dirty more often than not, requiring me to then replace the plugs and wash my hands to reinsert a new pair. After researching all that I could find, I settled on the 3M Peltors to do the job. As far as clamping down on loud sounds, these are spot on. It was great firing up an air hammer to hear almost nothing but a light buzzing and then being able to instantly talk to my coworker afterward. Unfortunately, I also quickly learned that certain background noises were suddenly amplified by the plugs as well. In my case, it was the blower fans in our overhead heater units. With the plugs out, they sounded like a blower fan up near the ceiling... noticeable, but not notably loud. With the plugs in and in their normal mode, it sounded like I was in the middle of a 150mph wind storm! Going to mode 2 (where it amplifies quiet sounds) only made it worse. Unfortunately, this prevented me from hearing anything my students or coworkers were saying, thus making them as useless as normal earplugs whenever the fans were on. I tried to use the windscreens, but since it wasn't a real "wind", it had no effect (but at least I can say I tried). In the end, I ended up returning them as they ended up out of my ears to talk to people more often than I had them in to protect against any loud sounds I encountered. 3
