There are other wires that can be used in a marine salt water environment, but tinned wire is capable of standing up to the effects on copper wiring by corrosion due to salt, which gets to wiring even if only the humidity of the salt air. Tinned wire keeps the salt from reaching the twisted wire and prolongs the use of the wire. Untinned wire will begin to corrode almost immediately after using in a salt water boat.
