Customer Reviews

Floating Foam StrapBefore I bought one I had read all of the reviews about how this product was too big to ever fit your wrist etc. etc.. I decided that that didn't matter to me because I wanted it more for it's ability to float than its ability to fit my wrist. This is the simple truth - This strap was never intended to be a "wrist strap". Shocking, I know. The title on the physical package that Vivitar puts the strap in, says "Floating Foam Strap", and it is just that; it is a strap, with some foam in it. Vivitar never billed this as a "wrist strap" and the entire issue of this being a crappy wrist strap is actually nothing more than an inaccurate description by the seller. Now to review the actual product; the "Floating Foam Strap". It is unfortunately typical Chinese construction. This thing doesn't exactly scream quality. The stitching is crappy. The 5 little pockets that make up most of the strap and enclose the pieces of foam, are each a slightly different size(2"x2ish"x.5ish") and are each slightly crooked. The 5 pieces of foam that are enclosed in the pockets are undersized(1.5"x.75"x.5"), and move around freely inside of the pockets just screaming out "I'm too small!". Vivitar honestly could have literally doubled the amount of foam that they stuffed in, thereby effectively doubling it's capacity as a "Floating Foam Strap", but they didn't. It's almost as if they were more concerned about keeping their strap afloat than your camera(or camcorder, or binoculars, according to the package(yikes!)).Now if you just have a tiny little point-and-shoot camera like me, this thing will probably get the job done. This "Floating Foam Strap" would probably do just fine in a pool or in a lake, but I would bet things could get a bit dicey in the ocean or in a river(looks like I'll find out later this summer, wish me luck!). 3Excellent FloatHighly recommend this for a float! I have used mine since 2011 in all kinds of water (fresh and salt) often for hours at a time and it has never lost buoyancy! However, I would not consider it a wrist strap; slips off too easily (but is very visible 20 or 30 yards away). I added a neck strap so that I can have my hands free when not using it. Very sturdy! Worth every penny and likely the only reason I still have my camera. 5this product would work fine..Does this float strap float? Probably. But the "adjustable strap" is only helpful if your arm is enormous. I had an Olympus brand float strap that would adjust tight enough that I could snugly "store" my camera on my upper arm while I wasn't using it in the water. There is absolutely no way I'll be able to do that with this strap. I might be able to put it on my thigh! But that doesn't help me.I suppose if I didn't intend to use the adjustable feature, this product would work fine...But I do want to use the adjustable feature, so this product is a huge flop. 2The key to happiness is having low expectations...I read all of the reviews before purchasing and I knew what I was getting into. Most of the negative reviews raise valid points, but let's be realistic. For less than five dollars, with free shipping, what you get is a relatively weak strap that does not adjust down to a human sized wrist and which has a quick release feature. In the situation in which I plan to use this item, snorkeling in water deeper than that for which my waterproof point and shoot camera is rated, I don't want a quick release feature, I want a slow and tedious release feature. I prefer to think of this as a bright yellow camera float that came from the seller with some extra stuff attached. Just loop the original non-floating wrist strap that came with your camera through the black webbing loop visible in the product photo (over there on the right side), cut off the obviously unnecessary parts and Eureka! You have a nice camera float. The Eureka reference above is what makes this review not only informative, but also quite amusing for those who caught the Archimedes reference. One of the negative reviews implied that this strap would need to have a buoyancy greater than the weight of your camera in air in order to be effective. If you are one of the people who has enough free time on your hands to read the comments related to that review, you'll know that this reviewer got his physics lesson and took it like a man. Just know that this strap only needs to have a buoyancy sufficient to counteract the negative buoyancy of your camera, which, if it's a point and shoot, should not be a problem. Verifying that before you snorkel above the Marianas trench would be advisable. 4There should be odes written to ineffective this "floating wrist strap"I chose this device as I wanted an extra bit of protection for my bran new underwater camera. I had planned a dive for more then 8 months, when the day finally arrived I was very excited to do the wreck dive. As will happen I lost my grip on the camera, instead relief washing over me because of the wrist strap, it was panic. The camera and wrist strap sunk like lead to the sea bottom. Luckily we were only in 35ft of water. When I recovered the camera I discovered much to my dismay the water tight case that protects the camera had opened because of the way I was instructed to attach the strap to the case. As some of you might know, salt water and electronics don't get along so well.In Summation;1) Strap USELESS!!!2) Brand New Camera recovered, but now useless because of water damage.3) Amazing dive was had, but I have no pictures to show for it.Question, can I give less then 1 star?? 1not bad, possibly too fragileBought this for my Kodak Playsport ZX3 waterproof camera. Going on vacation and am a little paranoid about dropping the camera to the bottom of the ocean. This float will support the ZX3 sufficiently, definitely bouyant enough, my only concern is the fragility of the quick-connect connector between the loop that connects to the camera and the float itself. The plastic doesn't seem all that sturdy, and the loop is pretty thin. I'm going to put it through some gorilla testing before I trust my camera to it. I will probably supplement/modify those parts before my trip for peace of mind. Overall, it's okay, will float a camera, so in a pool or shallow water it would be fine...but I don't think I'd trust it attached to my wrist while swimming around in deep water, I don't have confidence that the parts can take that degree of strain. 3Feels a little cheap and will not tighten on your wrist. But it worked OK for my goproI bought this for my gopro and a family vacation. We took the camera snorkeling and parasailing and didn't want my go pro on the bottom of the ocean. I didn't like the idea of having to attach the floaty back door on the gopro, so this was a good and cheap alternative that I can use on other waterproof cameras or devices. It does look and feel a little cheaply made, but it is of corse cheap to buy so that is to be expected. It attached to the camera easily and it floated fine. Others that said it wouldn't float may have had larger cameras. They were also testing in fresh water, and salt water is of course more buoyant (if that's where you are using it).The main issue I had was that it will not tighten on your wrist. We were able to put a rubber band on it to make it tight on the wrist and so that worked. But having some type of built in tightening device would have been much better. But overall it worked for us and was inexpensive. 3Works great . . . but a bit bigWe got the floating wrist strap for a trip vacation to the Caribbean. The strap made it easier to snorkel with our underwater-camera. I checked it before starting out and it did float with the weight of our small camera. Loved the yellow color and was comfortable to wear. Would have been 5-star except that the strap is so big and cannot be made small enough for most wrists. Before we went, I sewed some elastic on it to make it smaller and then it fit better. Sewing the elastic was easy. To add to my confidence, I also added a second hook to attach the camera in 2 places, just in case. I recommend a strap like this for snorkeling. 4Keeps camera from sinkingI bought this in conjunction with a waterproof digital camera for a family vacation. I was planning on taking a lot of photos in the sea, and the last thing I needed was to accidentally drop the camera into the water and lose it, along with all the photos that were on it. The strap has a simple loop that is looped on to the camera in place of the standard wrist strap that most cameras come with. Admittedly, it is a little bulky to carry around your wrist, but a small price to pay to keep your camera floating in case it is dropped into water. This will keep your camera afloat, no matter how hard it is dropped or how far it is thrown. 5Vivitar -- shame on you! This is the WORST design for an underwater camera strap -- whoever designed this clearly has never been in the ocean, bobbing in the waves, diving below the surface of the water and expecting this to stay on their wrist. The adjustable strap does not tighten around the wrist, therefore, the band is too big at all times. The only way this band would ever be snug on a wrist is IF your wrist is 16 inches around -- yes -- 16 inches! Really, Vivitar -- whose wrist is that large?? Unfortunately, we realized this problem once we were in the water and were very conscientious to hold on to the camera at all times.I give this a NO STAR rating, however, I had to click on 1 star to get my feedback accepted. DO NOT BUY THIS STRAP IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR CAMERA! 1
