Customer Reviews

Over all still a good product thoughMy only issue (the reason for 4 stars instead of 5), is that it came with a little divit/notch on one of the rails. When I'm trying to make a straight line on a piece of wood, I always get a little line deviation right when the pencil hits that spot. Bumms me out. Must have been a glitch when it was manufactured. Over all still a good product though. Still use it every day.4Must for any tool beltEverything you could want in a speed square. I m not giving it a 5/5 only because the measurement ticket are large. This works great for scribing a line on the inside of the tool, I m not sure why they are made so large/ aggressive on the outside. A must for any tool beltIf this review was helpful please let me know by clicking the Helpful button below the review.4This square is squareI understood that it was a cast part so expected the markings to be a little cruder than if it was laser marked. I checked the squareness against itself and it was perfect. I also checked it against the very expensive but not very robust squares and it was exact. I read one complaint about the weld leaving pips that had to be filed down. Mine looks to be a single cast without any welding involved. This is a robust square that I think will take serious abuse and still be square. I can toss it in the toolbox without worry. The little booklet was good if you did not have a grandfather who was a carpenter. I think some information on building stairs would have been good since the size of the square lends itself more to that kind of work. I have nothing but good things to say about this product.5An Heirloom & USA MadeWow, this is a nice tool. It replaced a plastic Speed Square. No matter how careful you are, those will eventually break (see photo). That's just a waste of resources. This is 3/16 aluminum, with a rare feel of quality - an outlier that somehow remained untouched by the corporate bean-counters.As for squareness, it checks out perfectly for framing work. If you are doing machine work, get the proper tool.5I was amazed to find I could buy the 7" and 12" ... If I'd known about these I would have bought them years ago. I saw a video recently and realized I needed the 12". I was amazed to find I could buy the 7" and 12" combo for less than the 12" alone! Now I have both. Wish I'd had them two weeks ago when I was reframing my garage's wall. The 7" is perfect for marking the ends of 2x4's for cutting. I'll be using the 12" this week to score and snap 8.25" wide Hardie planks per the video I mentioned. 5Swanson Tool S0101 7-inch Speed SquareI am not to crazy about this speed square, the reason i buy this because it is made of metal that i don't have to worry if i drop it, but the way it was made, it is not really that good..."made in the USA"1) metal are not smooth2) the lettering are not defined, they can do better than that.3) for a $1.00 more i could have bought the better onethat is the reason why i gave this a 3 stars.3Nice heavyduty speed square The speed square feels thicker than most of the aluminum speed squares that I have used. One thing that I liked is that all of the lettering appears to be painted black making it very easy to read. The square also has extra features that other squares do not such as notches that allow you to draw straight lines on your material speeding up the task significantly. Overall, I believe that this square is well constructed and should last a long time. I am very happy with my purchase. 5First Timer w/Rafters and "Birdsmouth."I'm always trying to increase my knowledge of building and carpentry and recently decided to incorporate a rafter (with bird'smouth) design into my window awning project. The Swanson square was perfect for the job and with the book it came with I was able to learn the "One-Number" rule that makes it real simple to build your roof rafters. I'd advise all first timers to do it on a smaller project--such as dog house or small shed--before a home's roof. I'm not a natural numbers guy so only read the book in a few parts, watched a quick video on the Swanson square and then went to work.I went through three sets of 2x4 rafters templates until I got the angle just right for the rafter to sit up against the ledger against the wall and the birdsmouth to land on the lower 'sill plate' that would support the window awning. I think my "ONE" number for pitch was 9 (I was using degrees{36}) and from that number you can essentially build a real roof. It came out great and from this one project I''m pretty sure I can build a real roof for any structure I design at this point. If you know your 'one' number prior to building a new project but we didn't because of other concerns such as making the awning tall enough for my clients to walk under while slope had to be steep enough to provide sufficient shade to window. As a result, my assistant and I had to test angle cuts (and then hold them up against the framing structure) until we got the approximation of 36 degree-which makes all the rafters plumb cuts. Then using the square we got the pitch of 9. More importantly, you can use a simple formula to find the distance for your birdsmouth (where your 'seat' and 'heel' cuts meet the outer edge of your bulding/sill plate). Prior to this project I only used my squares for 90degree cuts. Now, it's opened up a whole world of building possibilities. Thanks for the book, Swanson.4and he can barely contain his happiness as he flips through the blue bookI buy my husband an expensive set of tools or organize his car, and he barely notices. I buy him a $9 speed square, and he can barely contain his happiness as he flips through the blue book.I don't know. I just don't know. But he loves it. Says it feels so sturdy and that blue book alone would have been worth buying.5Best few dollars spent in a long time! Have been using a Sliding T-Bevel for years which I thought would be great for right and odd angles, but it turned out that I mostly need right angles. So I constantly had to look for something else that has a (supposedly) right angle. Also, the t-bevel would easily loose it's adjustment. So much easier now and also great that it serves as a guide for my jigsaw. Why didn't I buy this thing years ago? I could bite myself. 5Great item but not indestructableThis product is a great addition to my woodworking tools and I use it about 5 days per week in my personal shop. It is accurate and helps me mark perfect cuts. It is very strong and durable but you cannot leave it in the path of your Dewalt 12" cut off saw! The saw will cut right though it and send it flying off the bench! Don't be like me, pay attention to where you set it! LOL (I now put it back on the wall hook religiously before every cut). Fortunately the company has fast delivery and I replaced my first one that got sawed!5Five StarsGreat with its simplicity, ingenious design, highly recommended[ see application in attached PIC]5About the best, most useful tool in my toolbox.I am sure there s all kinds of wonderful things a real carpenter can do with one of these but this isn t that. As a retired guy that likes to build a few things around the house, I can t believe what a great tool this is! I am almost done with some long overdue shelves in the garage and I have used this tool countless times in the process. As I am on my time now, I m much more interested in quality than quantity. In order to get the precision I am committed to, I measure everything, pre-drill the holes and use screws, not nails. With the help of this tool and a couple of others, I am able to get some very acceptable results and intend to add a photo or two when the project is completed. There are a few good videos on YouTube showing everything from the basics to advanced techniques so if you are really interested, check that out. Any time I can get a tool this useful, of this quality for under ten bucks, sign me up! In my spare time, I intend on reviewing other videos to see what all else this can be used for.5
