Customer Reviews

Very, nice. better than expected For the price, I really didn't expect much. I expected it to be a very flimsy piece of cheap rubber that would fall off the camera and even deform under it's own weight and add vignetting to my images. I am very happy to say that my expectations were wrong. While the rubber is a bit softer than I would have liked, it's still much better than I expected. The lens mount seems firm enough and mounted well to my Canon EF 50mm f1.8 lens. There is plenty of room inside and another set of threads for use with another filter or with the standard lens cover.I'm impressed that it has three positions that it can fold into. All positions are usable with it mounted to the lens. The smallest appears to be what the main picture on Amazon shows. It collapses to where it is pretty much flush with the front of the lens cap while on the lens. It extends back a small bit on the lens, which does provide a bit of a "bumper" around the sides of the lens for protection in a bag or case, though I wouldn't recommend relying on this by itself to protect your lens. There is far more of the lens that isn't covered that still needs to be protected. In the middle position, I found that it seems to work the best with my 50mm 1.8 lens. It's not to far out there to worry about vignetting, but far enough to do what it's supposed to do - block light from entering the lens outside the field of view.I don't think I'll ever use it fully extended. It seems like it's out there a bit too far and I think I might have seen some vignetting starting to creep into the pictures. It's not worth it, so I'm leaving mine on the middle position.Overall, I am very, very pleased with it. For the price, I highly recommend it. My only reason for knocking a star off is that I would like to have seen the rubber be just a bit stiffer. Though, I suppose it might not fold up as well if the rubber were any stiffer. 4Amazing!! Wow this lens hood is awesome. It really is better than sliced bread!! It screws on over my lens filter piece, and I can easily snap the lens cap on/off since the rubber easily folds completely back (and thus out of the way) with little effort on my part. It says it has 3 positions:1. It pops open to a full hood which seems longer than the standard plastic lens hood I was using previously. On my canon EF-S 18-135mm lens, it does show up in my pictures from about 18-30mm, but once zoomed in from 40mm-135mm there is no shadow.2. With light pressure, it pops back easily into a shallower hood that does not show up on the corners of my images using my 18-135 lens at all. You can easily pop the lens hood back and forth between the two positions with 1-2 fingers.3. By folding it backwards, its like the hood is not even there. With my old flower hood, I would have to unscrew it and re-screw it on backwards to achieve this, which was a pain. Also, when folded backwards, its not in the way at all of the manual focus ring and its soft and flexible so I feel better about setting my camera on the table, etc.And it works really great with a rain sleeve. The cheap plastic rain sleeve I ordered has a drawstring for the lens hood, but I found that because the drawstring is not elastic, it kept slipping either forward (and into my field of view) or backwards off the hood (exposing my lens ring to the rain). Having the rubber lens hood made a huge difference--I positioned the drawstring around the lens hood and tightened it. The rubber lens hood puckered ever so slightly providing enough grip for the drawstring that even after an hour of shooting in the rain it didn't budge or slip at all.It also stores a lot easier in my camera backpack than a traditional plastic flower. And its a snap to change positions. The rubber is thick and sturdy but it pops effortlessly into the different positions, so if you are taking pictures where the lighting is variable, or if you are using a zoom lens where at certain length a lens hood interferes with your shot, I would recommend this lens hood because its so easy to change the length of it or fold it backwards completely. 5It's soft, it's rubber, it's a lens hood, it's less expensive and just as good The price is so low on this that I took a chance and bought two. This was a good move.I've had many of these collapsible hoods over the years. What you care about is:1. It must shield the lens from flare.2. You must be able to pop it out or collapse it without taking your eye from the view finder.3. It must screw cleanly into the delicate filter threads on the end of the lens, and accept filters and lens caps into its own threads.4. It must fit in your kit bag. This hood scores perfectly on #1-#3. It is large in diameter when collapsed, so you do need a bit of care to get it into your bag, particularly a small bag. But I don't see how any rubber hood could do a better job of this, so I did not deduct any points.Highly recommended. 5Lose the ring and it's pertect This hood is great.Pros:- I love that I can flip it forward or back when I need it.- It offer physical protection from bumps and bangs, and- It shades the bright lightsCons:- My biggest complaint is that the metal ring is too long. I can see it when I am at a wide angle, especially if you have a filter on your lens. But, this is not a big problem. I just put the rubber part directly on my lens and tossed the metal ring. It fits perfectly on my lens.- If you are using the built-in the flash on your camera, the hood can get in the way and cause a shadow. You can bend the hood back and flash can get by it. But, you need to remember to do that - otherwise you'll have a dark arc on the bottom of your shot. The best solution is to get a separate flash. You'll take better pictures and don't have to worry about the hood getting in the way.[I uploaded a picture that shows the ring in the corners - and the dark arc from the shadow of the hood - at the center bottom. After these photos, I tossed the ring and you cannot see theses effects.)I am using this on: Tamron AF 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di II LD Aspherical (IF) Macro Zoom Lens with Built In Motor for Nikon Digital SLR 4Almost Great It really doesn't matter the brand of camera or lens, this is pretty much a universal fit for any lens with 52mm threads. That said, it fits perfectly on my Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 14.1 MP Digital Camera with 24x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0-Inch LCD (Black); a 25-600mm super zoom. What I like: *Great price! *Great for preventing lens flare. *The rubber material will give some protection against accidental impact. *Once attached you have your choise of fully extended, half extended, or short extension (storage postion). *It can be installed directly to the lens or to a filter. *It has internal threads so you can install a filter or lens cap without removing the hood. *My camera came with a tulip-style quick on/quick off hood. I prefer using the Zeikos because I don't need to remove it when putting my camera in the case. Just push it to the flattened postion and install the lens cap. Thus, you don't have to worry about where to put the tulip-style hood if you're travelling light with a small case. *When shooting in inclement weather the extended hood helps prevent rain from hitting the lens. What I don't like: -Vignetting! There is a substantial amount of vignetting at 25mm and, as expected, is worse when the hood is installed over my UV or polarizing filter. When the hood is fully extended over a single filter the vignetting doesn't fully disappear until around 80mm. This hood is not something you'll want to use if you do a lot of macro shooting or wide angle shots. Ok, that's how it affects my camera but different lenses can have different results. That's why I provided my camera info at the beginning of the review even though this hood is really a generic product.Would I buy it again? Heck yes! I do a lot of landscape and senic photography as well as weather shots when I'm out storm spotting for the NWS (that's where the hood is especially useful as a rain shield). I use a lot of longer focal lengths so the vignetting isn't an issue. Overall, a pretty useful product. 4Great hood, but a little weak rubber. I bought this hood for my Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras attached to my Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only). It works great. It's more easy to store the camera on my Kata KT DT-213 Digital Torso-Pack without reversing any hood. at first I was not sure if the 50mm lens came with any hood and bought this one just in case. (I bought everything at once for save on shipping rates). The only inconvenient I found was that the rubber tends to mantain the shape after a while stored; I mean, when the camera is inside the bag, the rubber bends acording the shape where it is, when you take the camera to shot, you must wait until the rubber takes it round shape or you'll get a picture with some vignette. that's why I gave only 4 stars.Pros:- Inexpensive- Practical- Works in any lens brand (Nikon, Sony, Canon, Pentax, etc.)- Easy to retract shape for store cameraCons:- Mantain bended shape.- Long filter thread (may induce vignette on short focal lens)Update: May 21 2011Recently I put this hood to my Nikon 18-55mm [...] put a terrible vigneting on 18mmNot reccommended to use on wide angle lens. 4Lopsided rubber, useless. Couple years ago I got couple rubber hoods made by Fotodiox, and absolutely loved them. Perfect shape, perfect 3-way function, great threads. I was very happy with them, and thought that this is how they are supposed to be - how hard could it be to mold rubber, right? Not quite.Bought couple more rubber hoods recently. One (Neewer) came with wavy rubber, not pretty, but still at least usable. This 67mm Zeikos, on the other hand, is not wavy, but severely lopsided, so when it is 'extended', one side of it is almost straight, and other is coming at the semi-proper angle. Looks extremely odd, and is likely to interfere with wide angle lenses. Yes, it was only couple dollars, but they were all wasted.I usually do not give products 1-star ratings, but will make exception for this one. Useless. Hopefully, you will have a better luck. 1Love it! I purchased this after first using a hard plastic lens hood that broke the threads on the end ring of my telephoto lens from sitting it in my camera case with the hood attached. After having to twice replace the end rings on my lens due to using a hard plastic hood, I will never go back to a hard plastic one.I am about to order another of these soft rubber hoods, since mine just split at the base where it attaches.I'm not complaining, however. I'm still giving it 5 stars, as I love it. I've had it for two years, use my camera almost daily, & live in a dry climate, so feel I got my moneys worth. (A mere $5? No griping from me, if the next one lasts as long)I am an avid photographer, & keep it on my Canon 75-300mm telephoto lens (which I use almost exclusively, filming wildlife & cowboys), all the time.It has still retained it's shape, after spending literally years now sitting with one side flattened when my camera is not in use. It's round shape bounces right back with just a touch of your finger. That definitely impresses me.It does not interfere or appear in my photos at all, but does help cut any glare coming from the side, enabling me to see clearly to focus (I most often use manual over autofocus). It easily pops into one of the three positions you desire, though I usually use it fully extended since I'm shooting long, with a telephoto lens.I absolutely recommend this item if you use your camera a lot--especially after my experiences with a hard plastic hood! 5Not a tulip and shorter than in the pics Guess it's a misprint, not tulipy at all, as round as it gets :-)) I was sent BOWER, not Zeikos.Shorter than shown (32mm deep)Made of a thicker rubber, protect the lens front from bumpingWould like a longer one but can't really complain. The latest 3-stage hoods are made of thinner vinyl or something and they don't hold the shape in extended position. Large diameter in particular 4simply perfect with a few nice surprises I bought this particular hood for my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens because I didn't feel it was necessary to pay top dollar for the Canon-branded hood and I've read some suggestions that a rubber hood is better for the rather fragile, cheapo 50mm. Sticking a hard plastic hood on the fragile Canon could very well rip off the front of the lens with a bump into a wall or something. A rubber hood will provide glare reduction but also eliminate that may occur from impact with a plastic hood. The Zeikos hood is great. It uses a metal ring to attach to the filter threads of the lens. The hood attaches smoothly and you can still use the original lens cap on the hood without any difficulty (really nice feature). I've also used it attached to a UV filter and there aren't any vignetting problems. The rubber hood also as three positions so you can store or fully extend the hood. I haven't noticed any vignetting with any position of the hood so it's really great. Looks really nice on the lens in any position, too!I do have to add that this hood was intended for prime lenses (lens that don't zoom) like the Canon 50mm. Use in wider lens will probably result in vignetting. 5
