DEAD IN LESS THAN A WEEK! Delivered 8 August 2017, I installed it this Westek MLC4BC less than a week ago. It worked for a few days and then died.This is Not even close to the quality of the old Sensor Plug brand, nor the newer Westek Indoor Plug-In Corded Motion Activated Light Control MLC12BC-4. I hope the MLC12BC-4 style lasts like the old Sensor Plug*** brand (See note below) because this MLC12BC-4 style if a piece of junk.DO NOT RECOMMENDWASTE OF MY TIMEWASTE OF MY MONEYWASTE OF GAS TO GET IT HEREWASTE OF PLANET RESOURCES TO MANUFACTURE AND TRANSPORT ITStill well within 30 days, I am returning it with Amazon's prepaid shipping label, but I still have wasted my time and my gas on this piece of junk.*** I have several Sensor Plugs brand and they usually last for Many years. I have had some in continuous operation since 2010 (1st Amazon purchase, one or two may be older). Love, love, love Sensor Plug they have fuses! :-) *** 1Two out of Five Failed I've bought 5 of these now, two non-corded (MLC4BC) and two corded (MLC12BC-4). One corded sensor will not go on and one non-corded sensor will not go off. Is five a statistically significant sample? Probably not. Is a 40% failure rate indicative of the quality?I haven't had the working devices long enough to know if they will fail over time. Usually with today's solid-state devices, they either fail immediately or work forever. But I have seen other reviews indicating that they failed after the warranty period. If another one fails, I'll have to give the SensorPlug a try even though it has obnoxious marketing and a flashing red led on the cover (on the plus side, SensorPlug seems to have a 1 year warranty).I'm very happy with the functionality when these work (5 stars), but I'm pretty unhappy about having to return so many bad ones (0 stars). Therefore these get an average 2.5 stars, rounded up. At least Amazon makes the return process easy (thanks Amazon!).Updated 12/6/2014: Two of the devices I thought were working were just less flakey. It is not the location, because the if I swap with working devices the problems follow the buggy device that eventually won't turn off. Dropping my rating to two stars. 2It works, but not as I expected. I purchased this motion switch to turn on a lamp at the bottom of a flight of stairs. I positioned it at the bottom of the stairway looking up the stairs, so it would turn on the lamp when I approached the bottom step or when I began descending the steps from the top. I set the time adjustment so the light would remain on long enough for me to transit the stairway. From the description, it seemed like it would be a perfect application for this device. Not so. Despite numerous tries at re-positioning or shielding the device, I could not get it to turn on the lamp while I descended the stairs. It appears that it does not detect motion directly toward the eye, only motion across the field of the eye. Realizing this, I now have it aimed so it sees me enter the the top landing. It works, but unfortunately it also turns on the light whenever I pass by the top landing on my way to the next room. (If I aim or shield it so it doesn't see me until I am on the upper steps, it does not work.) 3Did not wrok well for me I bought this to turn on a light in a pantry. I first mounted it in the top back of the pantry looking down toward the door. It did not activate unless you waved a hand in front of it. Then realized it's a heat detector, rather than a motion detector. Remounted it on the inside far edge of the door frame looking toward the door knob area so that it would 'see' the person opening the door. Most of the time it would turn on with a 1 second delay, but probably 20% of the time it had a long delay or failed to turn on at all. I am replacing it with a much harder to install door frame switch. 3Item shipped is different than pictured, low sensitivity of motion detection. What I received did not have a big multidirectional motion sensor, as shown in the picture. My low score is because of the merchant sent me something different than shown in the Amazon listing. It has a tiny sensor that is flush with the housing. This requires you to be in exactly the right position waving your arms before it switches.I bought this to turn on some overhead light fixtures when you walk into the area. It fails to switch unless you are in motion in exactly the right spot. Two stars given instead of one because it does actually switch on & off as expected; my problem is with the sensitivity of the motion detector and the fact that it doesn't match the advertisement. 2Perfect for cat fountain control I am using this to control the on/off of a cat watering fountain (Deluxe Fresh Flow). It works great. Not as bulky as the Sensor Plug and works with low amperage devices. I really like that it has settable on times, as low as 1 minute whereas the Sensor Plug was less controllable (I believe the lowest on time was around 2 or 3 minutes). Also, this sensor outlet does not have the blinking red light as found on the Sensor Plug, just in case a blinking red light bothers you when motion is sensed. I own both and like this one better. 5This new one is Awesome! The one pictured in the description (with the bubble like sensor) did not work worth beans. It sometimes took a good 20 seconds of moving around to sense motion, and sometimes didn't turn off until I unplugged it. Worthless. I requested an exchange and they immediately sent me this newer model (with the flat sensor). This thing RULES! It works flawlessly for the little lamp I have in the bathroom. Timer is accurate to the second and speaking of which, even has a 4s mode. I tried it and it works but I imagine you would only want this around some stairs or a hallway? Otherwise if you stand still for 4 seconds it goes off and takes 3-4 seconds to reset. I would have given this new model a complete 5 stars but I DID have to go through the hassle of testing the first one and taking the other to UPS to be shipped back (at their expense mind you... so that's not as bad) 4Great units for use throughout your home! I have quite a few of these units throughout my house. I like to be able to walk in a room without having to turn on the lights, and I like that they automatically turn themselves off so I don't have to remember to do so. There used to be a unit that could be set so that it only turned lights on when it was dark, but this unit doesn't do that. I don't want lights to come on when the room is filled with sunlight, but in cases where I always want lights to come on when I walk in, especially in my walk-in closet, this unit is perfect. I also like the fact that I have a choice of 5 different lengths of time I can select for the lights to stay on before automatically being turned off. This is a great unit and I will probably buy more in the future! 5DID NOT WORK PROPERLY! Wish I would have returned this in time. I really wanted this in a bathroom where I have a pendant light hanging. After installing it it appeared to be working correctly and shut off after a few minutes. However, even though no one was in the bathroom (and there aren't any windows) the light would come on randomly. At first I thought it was a fluke, but I would come in and the light would already be on. The whole point was to save energy by only having the light come on when someone was in there. It also wasn't very sensitive either - to make it come on I would have to wave my hand in front of it, not just walk by. My guess it that these aren't made very well. Total waste of money! :-( 1Waste of Money, Not consistent, Frustrating This the most frustrating piece of carp I have ever purchased. The first worked about a month, but when I say "worked" that meant that it "barely" worked. It was very slow and you had to do a dance in front of it to get it to switch on. It finally died. I exchanged it and the new one also steadily went down hill after week or two. I thought this was a great idea to mount this in my 10 x 14 shed, facing at the door with no obstacles but no luck. And yet I could see it clearly, but it could not see me. At the end (three months later) I could walk right up to it while swinging my arms and even touch it, then about ten seconds later (or as I was leaving the shed) it would turn on. I finally got so frustrated one day when it came on as I walked out of the shed (after having stood next to it for more than 3 minutes in the dark) that I turned around and grabbed a nearby hammer and smashed it to smithereens. Amazing how much electronics is inside. You would think if that much engineering went into this thing you could at least make one that worked. No different than the other Chinese carp. Sad. 1
