Make sure this drive will fit in your laptop! My laptop came with a Seagate Momentus Thin 500GB 5400RPM drive. I do web development on my laptop, and so often have a database server running. Databases are bottlenecked by a slow disk, and I was finding that the 5400 RPM drive was causing my system to be pretty sluggish when I had a full development environment running, so I decided to switch up to a 7200 RPM drive. Being a long time user of Western Digital, this drive was my first choice.It turns out that this drive is 9.5mm thick, while the Seagate Momentus Thin (now called the Seagate Laptop Thin) is 7mm thick. What a difference 2.5mm makes! When I installed this drive in my laptop, there was a noticeable bulge underneath the keyboard, so much so that my space bar become permanently depressed and therefore unusable. Back to Amazon it goes...On the plus side, it definitely was faster than the 5400 RPM drive. Booting my laptop used to make me feel like it was 1995 again, but with the new drive, I got a much snappier startup.My laptop is an ASUS Vivobook V500C. This drive definitely doesn't fit in that model. If you're buying the drive to replace a drive in your laptop, be sure you check how thick the existing drive is to verify that this one will fit. 4Works as advertised, no worries! I just installed the drive into my MacBook Pro 13", early 2011 model. It installed easily, and runs perfectly. Installation is hindered by Apple Store who didn't have the OS available for download and installation. Good thing I had today's Time Machine back-up of the old drive. Time Machine installed my OS and files onto the new drive without a hitch. All done and all is well. 5Good Solid Drives with Desktop Level Perfomance I always recommend WD Black drives as replacements for desktops.I have replaced many laptop hard drives in laptops for friends and clients. Because of the heat generated inside laptops, it is not unusual for drives to last only 2 or 3 years. Out of the last 10 hard drives I replaced, none were Western Digital. Another side note is manufacturers use the cheapest drives which are also the slowest.If you want to keep your laptop and data for more than 2 years, install a WD Black drive. The transfer rate is nearly equal to a desktop hard drive or about twice the speed of your OEM drive in your laptop. I have yet to see one of the WD Black drives go bad in a laptop. I have a WD Black drive in my desktop that is almost 10 years old. Disk diagnostics show no bad sector and no errors.TIP: If your drive is getting slow and your system is hanging, replace it before it crashes and you lose your documents, pictures and all other data. If your system will not boot because it cannot read the hard drive or hard drive failure, you still have a chance to recover your files. I have an external SATA dual dock that I use to clone client's drives. When I get a laptop with a drive that cannot be mounted or read, I place the drive in a static bag and the put it in a sealed plastic bag and place it in the freezer overnight. In all cases, except for 2 drives, I was able to mount the drive and clone it after taking it out of the freezer. The drive normally will last about 1 to 2 hours after a good dose of freezing. Don't try to put it back in the laptop to clone it or copy files. The drive will get too warm, too quickly, and usually will only last about 20 minutes in the laptop. 51 dud out of 3. Love WD, but can't go to four stars on this Bought 2 in Feb 2015 from Amazon to go into a slightly aged Dell Optiplex 780 in RAID1. Mfr date was supposedly Jan-2015. Worked fine for about 6 months. Then one of the two started giving me problems: the drive in Slot0 would repeatedly show a status of missing while the system was already up and running, forcing a 20-hour rebuild each time.Then, the Intel ROM started showing the disk in Slot0 with a persistent SMART error upon every power-up. I would just mark the drive as good once booted (using the Intel Rapid Store Technology application) and verify the volumes, but then that even started failing: I couldn't get through a quick, simple Volume Verify (not rebuild, mind you) without Disk0 flagging some unspecified SMART diagnostic problem while system was running.Would have liked to have known what the SMART error was, but that was not possible with the primitive Intel on-board controller, and the drive defined as part of a RAID set.Anyway, I replaced the troublesome WD5000BPKT in November 2015 with a WD5000LPLX, which Amazon says is a "newer version" of the BPKT. It seems nearly identical to the BPKT, according to the Western Digital spec sheet for this series, except that the LPLX has a larger cache, and slightly different power consumption. The volume rebuild was lightning fast versus what I'm used to, so one of the three drives I bought was a big problem. (I would also note that the physical label on the LPLX says nothing about it being an Advanced Format Drive, even though the WD spec sheet indicates that this is indeed the case.)So, I went with three stars for my review, because it looks (fingers crossed) like I got 1 dud out of 3. That's better than 50%, but not quite worth a four-star rating to me. 3High qualiy, gets your laptop up and running again. High quality hard drive for laptop computer 2.5 form factor. This unit also has a higher RPM than the factory Toshiba that failed.After I installed it I had to change the partitions of the hard drive. I found that AOMEI Partition Assistant (http://www.aomeitech.com/aomei-partition-assistant.html) worked the best to repartition the hard drive. It worked easily, quickly, and was freeware. You need software like this if you want tomerge two different partitions into one and they are not side by side but separated by a partition like a system or recovery partition that you can't merge. Very easy to use and worked great with this hard drive. I have had good luck with Western Digital hard drives in the past in the 3.5 form factors in desktop computers. 5Quiet, Quick and (I m out of Applicable Q Words!) REVIEWOther reviewers have commented about excessive noise from this drive. I have excellent hearing and honestly cannot detect any noticeable increase in volume with this 7,200rpm drive vs. the 5,400 rpm drive it replaced. Drives are often louder in external cases, so the observation may have resulted from that type of installation.I assume battery life will decrease due to the faster drive but my notebook spends 99% of its time plugged in, so for me this is a non-issue.Subjectively, the drive seems quick. I haven t noticed any speed increase over my old one, though this is probably because the older SATA II bus in my machine prohibits taking full advantage of the drive s superior SATA III data transfer speeds.Note that this is a barebones drive sold in bulk. It is sold intentionally without fancy packaging, installation CDs and manuals so it can be priced lower. Some reviewers are unaware if this and downgraded the drive because it lacked these extras. I highly recommend reading through the specs, manuals and support sections on the Western Digital web site.Nearly every Western Digital hard drive that I ve used over the past 30 years has lived a long, trouble-free life and I expect the same from this one. Overall I recommend this drive and if/when I have any problems I will update this review.ADDENDUMI included the following in case it helps someone clone another drive to this one. Please note that this is an Advance Format (AF) drive. If you happen to be migrating from a standard format drive, you may need to align the drive partitions after cloning. I thought I would have to, but for whatever reason it was unnecessary.On my Lenovo G580 notebook running Windows 8.1, I cloned a failing Seagate Momentus 500G ST9500325AS to this WD5000BPKX. The basic procedure was:1. Downloaded and installed the Acronis True Image utility from the Western Digital website, then used its Media Builder feature to burn a bootable CD.2. Swapped new drive into notebook (for disk-to-disk cloning, Section 6.2.1 of the True Image manual recommended putting the new (target) drive where you plan to use it and the source (old drive) into a USB 2.0 enclosure).3. Put old drive into a USB 3.0 enclosure and plugged into an open USB 3.0 port.4. Booted from True Image CD, taking care to select correct source and target drives! (NOTE: in order to mount and read the CD as well as recognize the new hard drive I had to go into the BIOS and disable secure boot, change boot mode from UEFI to legacy, boot priority from UEFI first to legacy first, USB boot from enabled to disabled (I don t know if this was necessary), change SATA controller working mode to compatible and change boot order to read the internal CD before the hard drive. You may or may not have to do all this depending on your machine and OS.)5. Ran True Image cloning utility. (I got a series of can t read sector error messages on the source drive but chose to ignore all. Reasoning: when I received errors the first time I tried cloning, I connected the drive to another machine and scanned it for problems, but it found none. I cloned again and ignored the errors, assuming that if the cloning utility did find bad sectors, then that didn t automatically mean there was data in them maybe they were bad but empty having been mapped around.)6. Changed boot order back to original sequence & disconnected USB enclosure.7. Rebooted notebook to run off new, cloned drive.8. Downloaded and installed WD Align from the Western Digital website.9. Ran WD Align, but got a message that no alignment was necessary.10. The machine has been running fine with no apparent problems running applications, starting up, shutting down or accessing the Internet. 5The largest and fastest drive you can get for an XBOX360. I bought this drive to use with my XBOX 360. Using HDDHACKR 1.40 I successfully modified the drive and was also able to recover the original XBOX emulator from my old drive. Once I set everything up, which took about 15 minutes total. The drive was instantly recognized by the Xbox, which gave me 460 GB after formatting. After that i transferred 200 GB of data to it from my old 250 GB drive with an XBOX transfer cable. The drive does get warm inside the Xbox. However this can be remedied with an inter-cooler to lower the ambient temperature, or you can just do what I did and leave the drive door off of the Xbox and lay it flat so the heat can rise and escape.To any of the people out there that say there is no real difference in getting a 7200 rpm drive, you are crazy. The loading times for all games and apps decreased dramatically. It used to take about 30-45 seconds to go from loading screen to action in Halo 4 now the loading screen cant even finish before i'm in the game. GTA 5 used to take over 2 minutes to get into single player from the Rockstar logo. Now it takes about 1:00-1:15 to get into single player. Destiny load times were cut in half. On average i would say it has cut loading times by ten to fifty percent it just depends on the game. So if you want 500 GB of the fastest loading storage for your XBOX 360, then I recommend this drive 100%. 5NCQ feature doesn't work under Linux Feb 2016 correction: in different machine (HP dl360p g6) and with different SATA controller, this disk performs OK, with no errors (no NCQ).So I guess in my previous review - a combination of sata controller + disk did not work together OK.Seagate disk worked with that controller OK though, so I'm upgrading this disk to four stars.##########################################In order to make this disk to perform under Linux OS, NCQ feature needs to be disabled, otherwise this disk triggers lots of errors.SATA connection is reseted every time such errors occurs, and for the user, disk seems to be slow and non-responsive.Tested with two latest releases of Debian (as of April 2014).Even after disabling NCQ is not as fast as it should be. Copying over big files takes a while, definitely longer than older3.5" SATA2 WD drives.A note - these errors only show under heavier load (or bigger files ?), specifically when doing rsync of a directory from another machine. Around 500kB of data. 4Not worth the trouble My computer is an Aspire 5734Z-4836. My OS is Ubuntu. I started having pop up warning windows telling me my HD was failing. I backed up what I wanted and ordered this HD. My old HD failed yesterday and my new one came today. I installed it and was up and running in under an hour. My new HD loaded Ubuntu so much faster than my original HD. Great upgrade.8/4/2015 Today this Hard Drive failed. It always vibrated now it is a paper weight. Fast to the junk yard. I do not recommenced this. POS. 1Drive's Good, Packing-Shipping Much Improved .The drive itself is a Western Digital Black. There are millions of them running right now all over the world. Given half a chance (mostly meaning no shipping damage, and not overheated) these drives will run happily for years.As for it being an "Advanced Format" drive (AFD), I'm running Windows XP on two such drives. Western Digital provides a program that makes the needed adjustments (if any) to the drive, though oddly, you can only download the program after you register your warranty. The program itself is simple to run.The important thing here is that Amazon seems to have cleaned up the way it ships hard drives. I've posted pictures of the shipment I received. The drive was contained in what appears to be a factory box, and that box was contained in another.Sadly, there was no packing material at all between the two boxes. All shipped boxes are thrown around by carriers (if not by human handlers, then by the sorting machinery) and the lack of packing material here can actually amplify shock loads when the small box slides inside the larger. Even a small amount of brown paper wadding here would make all the difference. But still this is a huge improvement over Amazon's previous near-useless packing methods, so credit where it's due.Again sadly, it's not certain that every shipment is packed this way (or perhaps better, with packing materials between the two boxes). In the past different Amazon shipping points have used different packing methods, so unless Amazon makes an announcement we can only hope for the best.There are some general things to know about hard drives. None of this is my personal opinion, it's all information I've gotten from the Western Digital and Seagate web sites:All hard drives are essentially silent. Any intrusive noises, including loud clicks, and especially including any grinding noises, are guarantees of imminent failure.Hard drives have no noticeable vibration. Put your hand on the metal casing (not the circuit board) and you can barely feel the disks spinning, and that's all be vibration there should ever be. Anything more means, again, imminent failure.An occasional exception to the no-noise-no-vibration rule happens when the metal parts of the computer case vibrate, which can amplify sound the way a guitar top does. But this is not common, and the general rule about hard drives is: you should never know it's running.Overheating is death to all electronics. If you're at all geeky do a web search for a free program named Speccy, by piriform dot com. Speccy requires no installation. Just 2click to run it, and it reports various internal temperatures. Anything over 50 degrees Celsius is bad, and lower is better. Check your fan(s), make sure air vents are clear, always ensure that there's a cooling airflow.As a matter of information, these are laptop drives but I have two and run them in my two desktops. The data (small) and power (large) cable connectors are the same, they plug in with no alterations or adapters of any kind. The connectors themselves automatically make the right connections.And finally, my opinion is don't hesitate to use Amazon's 30-day warranty. Shipping damage seems to be the #1 cause of hard drive failures, so if you have any suspicion at all that you received a damaged drive, then I say back she goes.. 5
