Fatal Device Hardware Error As I was preparing to move abroad as volunteer for 2 years with the US Peace Corps, I bought this device to store over 1 TB of movies. I really needed this device. I left America in September 2017 and this device was working great until it randomly stopped working in November 2017. It only lasted 2 months of use when it gave me a "fatal device hardware error" I have tried everything to clear it....drivers, you name it... and I fear it is unsavable...the device and the 1 TB of movies on it. This has given me some a lot of unneeded stress of staying up late, researching and attempting to fix it. When this device failed, I had very limited access to the internet. I am very much disappointed in this product and the money I spent on it. I would not recommend anyone to buy it. 1failed within 1 month. cost me $1k to recover. I photograph wedding on the side, hardrive failed within 30 days, lost 2 clients wedding, because my secondary backup failed at same time. This hardrive cost me $1000.00 to have company recover my data. Would have costed me $2000 if i didn't wait for it a month. Avoid the metal edition like the black plaque. 1Excellent Drive for the Price and Physical Size Great drive for the price, especially when you catch it on sale. Snagged my 3TB Silver Ultra Metal for $89.22. The only cons I can think of is the cable that comes with it is ridiculously short, around 12 to 14" tops and the top speeds could be higher but can't really knock it considering it is ~5800(can't remember exact RMP but it's close to 5800) RPM drive and not 7200 due to the physical size of the drive itself. With a new Z170 chipset motherboard and a USB 3.0 port it tops out at ~128-132 MegaBytes a second on sequential read and write. The 4K random speeds are horrible of course, just like any other mechanical drive but I will give it 4 stars since it is a very affordable and extremely tiny and light weight external drive.I put it through a 38 hour long read/write stress test over Christmas weekend and it came back with zero bad sectors or any other problems. I do this with all new HDD's/SSD's to make sure it isn't a lemon and I highly recommend everyone do the same on any drive they purchase. The only reason I knocked off a star is the stupid short USB 3.0 cable that it came with. So if that doesn't bother you, it's a 5 star drive as long as you stress it and make sure it will pass. It comes with software pre-loaded on the drive that can stress test it but I use Hard Drive Sentinel's Read/Write Destructive data test. It will erase all data on the drive so if you do use it, be sure to copy the pre-loaded software to another drive then put it back once it finishes.I haven't used the pre-loaded backup software or the included dropbox online cloud backup but it looks like it is a very easy to use piece of software from the reviews I have read. So I have no reason to think it would affect my star rating, if anything it would probably put it up to a 5 star review since WD has always had great pre-loaded software. They even have a WD version of Acronis True Image which I use in it's full version form for all my backups and it is a wonderful tool for auto-scheduling of backups or realtime backups with a myriad of options to fine tune how you exactly want to do your backups. It isn't pre-loaded on this drive but you can go to WD's site and download their version of it for free once you register your drive.I was highly skeptical of getting this drive at first with the failure rates of mechanical drives being pretty horrid in the last couple years and especially with the external, ultra portable ones having the worst rates of failure. But as long as you stress test it properly when you first get it to weed out a bad drive I see no reason not to buy one. 4Big WD fan, but encountered problem when using this device with a Mac with disk utility/time machine I am modifying my earlier review (below the line) to add this note: After purchasing a different brand and experiencing the same problem, I again contacted Apple. Though initially I was again told that the problem was not associated with their OS, I was now convinced it was and so was more persistent. After some back and forth, i finally spoke to people there who confirmed that the problem described below is a known problem for the Sierra and High Sierra OS's. (Note: I haven't checked again in the last few weeks, so it is theoretically possible that it has been fixed since I last spoke with Apple.) Anyway, I just wanted to clarify that the problem I mentioned in my previous review now appears more likely to have been an Apple, and not WD, caused problem. I also would like to repeat the nice things I said about WD: In my interactions with their technical support, I have usually spoken with very nice, very capable people working in their customer support group and I've had nothing but good experiences with my two previous purchases of WD external drives.****************************************************************************************************************************************************I hesitated about what star rating to give. I am returning this product for the reason that I will explain momentarily, which might suggest a 1-2 star rating. However, I still very much like my older versions of this same drive, which I would give 5 stars to. I also think highly of WD's customer service. If a person doesn't have the same needs I have, I would say, "Buy this, and hopefully you will fare as well with it as I have with my older drives." However, for Mac users, you may want to read on.The problem I had with this device: It does not appear to be fully compatible with Time Machine. I formatted this for a Mac using the 'journalled, encrypted' option in Disk Utility. The WD web site also indicated that this is an appropriate way to prepare device for use with Macs, and this is how I prepared my older WD drives and all has been well with them. This time, I formatted the drive the same way. However, the second time I plugged the drive into my computer and tried to unlock the drive, there was no way to get the password hint to display. I repeated the process of reformatting the disk 4 or 5 times, each time entering a password and hint, and each time got the same result. The nice technician at WD found the same instructions on their website that I was following, got a drive like the one I was using, plugged it into a Mac, did the same things I did, then experienced the same problem. The tech suggested that I could try to use the device with WD's own utilities as a work around, but I explained that I had a strong bias towards using the utilities that came with my computer and never would have purchased had I known that it was no longer fully compatible with disk utility/Time Machine.Bottom line: if you are a Mac user and like to encrypt your external drives using disk utility and want to be able to see your password hint, you may want to pass on this drive for the time being, or at least call WD's customer service directly to find out if this bug has been fixed. Beyond this, I really have had great experience with WD, both with their devices and with the folks at their customer service the few times I've called. i currently have two other WD drives: one 1+ year old and the other 5+ years old. I generally back up every week. Both of these older units have given me no problems at all. The only reason I was buying this drive was because I'm getting nervous in view of the age of my older drive., having read about so many drives failing after 3 or so years. 4HORRIBLE QUALITY with this specific WD HARD DRIVE!!! Purchased two of these drives, both have failed (constant blinking light). This cannot be fixed. Tried several times, different cables, different ports...nothing works. All sources online claim it's a dead drive if this occurs. Looks like they put more emphasis on the look than being reliable. The first drive I purchased a month ago. The second drive was purchased a couple weeks ago and failed within 48 hours. Very disappointed in WD quality on this particular drive. Amazon was good enough to replace the second drive purchased ASAP. Now we'll see if they back the one that's a month old. Ridiculous!!!Seagate has usually been the suspect brand, but not so in this case. 1WD Passport stops working!! I purchased this in February 19th, 2015, as my previous 1 TB passport stopped working. I purchased a hard shell case as I would be storing important data and didn't want the drive the stop working as my previous one did. Every-time I used it, I would handle it with the utmost care as I felt my previous passport failed as I let it roll around in my knapsack. Three months later, when I was staring the drive up, it stopped working. I could hear and see the light functioning, but it was not opening up all the data I had stored on it. I tried multiple times over the next several weeks but no response from the drive. 70% of the items I had on this drive, I backed up to several USB drives, so I still have these files, the rest is gone. This is twice I purchased a WD Passport and it has failed, I will not be purchasing or recommending this product. 2Works with Mac I purchased this based upon the WD name for reliable, quality products. I use it with my Mac using OS X El Capitan 10.11.3. To use with Mac, open the disk utility and reformat it. You can partition it to one partition or several partitions based upon how you plan to use it. The external hard drive comes formatted to work with a PC out of the box.I don't have to travel with my external hard drive but it's lightweight and small should I need to do so.I keep it on my desk in a stand that I purchased for my iPhone 6 Plus. I connect it to my MacBook Air when needed. It's a great source to use to backup using Time Machine or to load music, photos, and other files that you don't need to store on your computer which will leave more space on your computer.If you're a Mac user and hesitant about purchasing this external hard drive, then don't be!! 5Great Drive, Great Brand, Great Price I purchased this 3T Passport Ultra Metal Edition to hold my Music. I love it! Of course, I'm kind of a Passport Girl.PROS1) It's small and won't clutter your desk top.2) It works with Mac O/S El Capitain!!! Just follow the simple instructions available on the WD website.3) Passport Ultra HDs are work-horses. (I chose to purchase this one, because my 2T Passport Ultra is chugging along beautifully.)4) The Metal Edition matches my MacBook Pro. It's a cool-looking peripheral and fashion accessory all in one.Sort of a Con1) The Passport Ultra Metal Edition is the same plastic as all Passport Drives on the bottom. This is not a detriment. These drives are designed and built to last. However, if you are concerned about transporting your Passport Ultra, amazon.com sells cases. 5WD is the brand to go!! I use my WD My Passport Wireless 1T for old and new family videos and photos only, WD My Passport Wireless Pro 2T for Movies (mov's mp4's) and mp3's and WD My Passport Ultra 1T for personal pdf's.. and I use them every single day.. My Passport Wireless Pro has a sd slot and a USB thumb drive slot in which I can move files from the unit to any of the connections or move them between them you can use "copy/paste" this is just a jewel.. 5I cannot recommend purchasing this HD given my experience. After being a diehard Seagate fan for many years, I decided to try the WD 1 TB Silver My Passport Ultra Metal edition thinking it might be more durable for when I travel in a few months. I've had the drive for approx. 2 months and keep it in a padded case. It has barely been moved and handle with extreme care. It seemed to work relatively okay. A little bit glitchy with time machine on the Mac, but sufficiently good enough to keep... so I thought.As of today the hard drive has started to be incredibly noisy - whirring, clicking, low grinding noises. This is a backup HD for my business and cannot afford to have an unreliable, possibly failing, data backup system. I cannot recommend purchasing this HD given my experience. 2
