Perfection at the Price! For a decade now, I have been accustomed to top of the line vortex binoculars ( $900) and Kowa 80mm ( $2000) and loved them both with zero complaints on every level.. I also recently bought this 8x42 diamondback and the new 2016 10x42 diamondback to try out face to face... First let me say that I like the old design 8x42 very much for the money ( you can find this for $134 to $180)... But , The new 2016 Vortex 10x42 diamondback at ( $229 is just fantastic for that extra $50 to $70) .. great improvements in weight , ergonomic feel, extra brightness, also a slightly more refined focus knob. You will likely be very happy with either model , but I really recommend going for the 2016 diamondback 10x42 if you considering among the two. Honestly, Neither performs exactly like the top line vortex , but it is surprisingly close and much much less $$$ 5Undoubtedly hold their own against the big boys! Full disclosure. I did not keep these binoculars, but in their defense I put them in the ring with a nearly $800 pair of Leupold BX - 4 Pro guide HD. In full light these two binoculars have nearly indistinguishable Optical qualities. They are both extremely comfortable to hang on to and focus with one hand. The Vortex possibly Edge out the Leupold because of the great indentation for your thumb that always lets you know exactly where to hold on. My wife and I did an A B test with the pair for nearly two hours starting at about an hour before dusk. And to be perfectly honest I was just about ready to send the Leupold back, even though in my eyes the Leupold are very sexy in Design. It wasn't until it started getting nearly too dark to hunt that the Leupold began to show their strength. In EXTREMELY low light conditions the Leupold have some sort of magic that seem to almost amplify the very little light that was left in the sky! Now is that worth the extra$400? That's for you to decide. You could get three pairs of these and be completely happy with having a pair for your bow case, hunting bag, and glove box. Other comparisons worth noting, the lens caps on the vortex are much easier to put on and take off of both ends which I am very disappointed in being that I am returning them for the slightly better Optics of the Leupold. The clamshell case for the vortex is a little oversized for the 8 x 42 allowing them to slop around a little bit when closed but also allowing a little more room in the case which might be ideal for people with a sling or harness.As for the reviewer claiming that they are fakes. I looked at my box and thought for sure I had fakes as well. Nowhere on the box or the binoculars or the case does it say vortex. But on the last page of the manual under the VIP warranty it gives the information for Vortex Optics I called the 1-800 number and talked to a very nice lady in Wisconsin that went to her inventory room and grabbed the same pair that I purchased on Amazon and we compared everything. The outside of the box, the case, the contents Inside the Box and the binoculars themselves and she assured me that these are definitely the real deal.In short, if I was on a $200 budget I would not hesitate to purchase the Diamondback 8 x 42 binoculars. 5Great for bird watching. I did a lot of research (almost two years) from many sources and then created a list of 5 bins that I wanted to explore. I visited stores and would try ones on my list, plus other 8x42's. Even though I never tried the ones on my list "side by side" (no store carried all five on my list, I was lucky if they had two on my list), but when I tried the Vortex Diamondback 8x42 I knew they were on the one. I have not been disappointed. My eyes are sensitive to light and the expandable eye cups are great for keeping light from entering from the side. The focal dial turns smoothly and are very clear. Probably my favorite feature is the close up focus of 4.5 feet. I do a lot of bird watching from inside my house and with a cataract that is not ready to be removed, the close up focus helps with the smallest details. My husband purchased a pair of 8x42 of another brand that was on my list and when he looked through mine, he couldn't believe the difference. 5winced at the price but loved them when i got to alaska..... took these binos to Alaska for whale/animal watching. compared them to my 10x42 Orion (which i lent to my nephew) and they didn't compare. i loved them at twilight. so much more light and clarity in the morning and evening. the wider field of view and the weight were really nice on the long hikes and trying to catch a view from the boat.they were a bit pricey but i really liked them. bringing them hunting this fall and giving them Orions as a present.... 5Great binocs Crisp optics centrally, if you've only used wal-mart 7x35 binoculars these will amaze you. Everyone I've handed these to for a quick look at something has looked back at me with awe after a few seconds of use...really impressive brightness and clarity. Very life-like image. However...they're not perfect, but for the price point, I think one should expect this.Negatives:1).When panning while viewing, there is a very noticeable "fish-bowl" effect, with the edges of the visual field appearing closer than the center. If one is glassing for game over several hours, this would be a nuisance.2). The edges of the visual field are not as crisp as the center. I realized this was a weakness when comparing to a higher-end set of Leupold binocs, also 10x42. When these Diamondbacks are mounted on a tripod, if you are trying to look for game, your "functional" visual field would be restricted detrimentally(Note: I experimented with vertex distance to see if that would improve the edges of the viewing field--it did not.). But if you are bird-watching, where you're going to be holding the binocs in your hands, if you are scanning for a bird, once you detect it, you can quickly center the animal in the viewing field, so this weakness is not a significant problem in this scenario.3). Chromatic aberrations. They're there, they're noticeable, but the average user will likely not complain about this. If you enjoy the richness of colors comprising a bird's plumage, this might be little bit of a nuisance. If your viewing is more goal-oriented (spotting game and discerning characteristics thereof) this will probably not bother you.On the whole, these are an excellent set of binoculars for a reasonable cost. I highly recommend them, and have recommended them to friends. Some of these weaknesses do leave me wishing for better, and I'll probably upgrade in the future, but this is a great place to start. 4Good binos for the price Good binos for the price. I compared these side by side with similar priced Leupolds, and the Vortex were better in every way. The clarity and brightness is good, the ergonomics are good, they are light, they are fairly compact, the twist up eye cups are good, the case is good for traveling in the truck, and the warranty is awesome. I use these several times every night to look for predators out of my window. I can see very well with them in the dark for being 10 power. 5I'm very pleased with my Vortex New 2016 8x42 binoculars Hi,I'm very pleased with my Vortex New 2016 8x42 binoculars. Compared to the Bushnell Naturview 8x42 binoculars that I've been using for the last 3 years the Vortex are much better. They are brighter, clearer, lighter, focus better, handle better and have the incredible Vortex Warrantee.I got to experience Vortex support a few months ago when I dropped my Vortex Razor Spotting Scope on a sharp rock shattering the optical eye piece. When I called Vortex I made it clear that it was my fault, but they told me "no matter the cause we take care of you". I paid the cost of shipping the scope to Vortex. They replaced the eye piece tested the performance of the new eye piece with the rest of the scope to ensure the combination passed like new performance. Vortex then shipped the repaired scope back to me with no charge.That experience had a lot to do with the reason I chose Vortex when I purchased my new binoculars.Jack 5Amazing Budget Friendly Binoculars! Last year I had purchased a pair of Redfield Rebel 10x50 for about $135 all said and done, and for the price, I will say those are an excellent set of Bino's, and I always got compliments. This year however, I really wanted something a little lighter weight, as I spend a lot of time on my feet, so any weight I could shed on my neck/back was most welcome. I had a hard time choosing between the Leupold BX-2 Acadias and these. And owning Leupold Scopes, and range finders I was originally leaning that direction, but sadly(or not?), Hunting season was here! and Amazon was not offering Prime on the 10x42's in the BX-2, so I decided to bite the Bullet on these new 2016 Model Diamondbacks. So far I absolutely love them! They are light, but not a "cheap" feeling light. They are extremely comfortable in hand, and very sharp glass quality, surpassing my Redfields(note they are a Leupold Company now) by a small margin! One thing that really stood out in comparison to my old pair is the lighting quality, very clear and bright! especially in lower light conditions! I was beyond impressed. The carrying case it comes with is awesome, and a nice change over many other "pouch style" carrying cases form other manufacturers. Overall I am super satisfied with this set of Binoculars especially given the price tag! I really would have liked to compare the BX-2 & Diamond back side by side, however our local Cabelas was out of stock in both in the 10x42 size, so it is what it is! But I can say I strongly do recommend these! This past weekend I was out with my 2 Brother in laws & my father in law, and they were shocked how bright and clear the image was. Says enough for me!UPDATE 11/3/2016Went in to Cabelas today now that they have both the Vortex Diamondbacks & Leupold BX2's in stock in the 10x42. Comparing side by side, glass quality was neck and neck, but I would almost favor the Diamondbacks in sheer "crisp image" factor. But honestly to close to really call, especially in store. One thing for sure I can tell you is that the 10x42 Leupold BX-2's were a substantial amount heavier, which to me is a con, also far bulkier feeling in general. The feel if the Diamondbacks in hand is far more comfortable than that of the BX-2's. All while the Diamondbacks are $30-$40 cheaper depending on current market value. Vortex get's my call on this one!Update: 5/26/2019Recently picked up a pair of Leupold BX-4 Pro Guide HD's for a price to good to pass up. While edge to edge clarity, and low light conditions are noticeably better, the Diamondbacks are still a crazy good pair of binocular's, especially given the price tag. I was also able to use a pair of Vortex Viper HD's this past 2018 Elk season, they also were a noticeable improvement over the Diamondbacks. Overall this will likely be the last time I update this review. The Diamondback's are probably the best bang for your dollar binocular on the market plain and simple, and really aren't THAT far behind the curve compared to the $600-1000 set's. If you can't successfully spot animals in the field with the Vortex Diamondbacks, you're doing it wrong. 5The perfect hunting bino These are an amazing value and my favorite bino for hunting. The 10x magnification is perfect in that it gives enough magnification without being difficult to keep steady in hand. I am always amazed at how much light these binos let in. They are much brighter than what you can see with the naked eye and since a lot of hunting is done just after dawn and just before dusk, this is a big deal. I really noticed how big of a difference it was a few nights ago. I was with the kids sledding on a hill near our home in Utah at around 9:00 at night when a neighbor says "Is that a coyote in the brush at the bottom of the hill?". Since I always keep these binos in my truck, I ran to grab them. It was dark out and the only light was from a street light that wasn't that close to what I was looking at. When I went to use the Vortex Binos, I was amazed at the brightness and clarity. I was able to clearly see that it was a dog and not a coyote. After one look through these, my neighbor said he had to get him a pair.Clarity: If you have lots of disposable income, get the Vortex Razor HD (Vortex Optics Razor HD 10x42 Roof Prism Binocular). Yes, they are crisper. Are they worth the extra money, to me they aren't. If I were a bird watcher or going on a once in a lifetime safari in Africa, then maybe I would spring for the extra clarity. For my intended use, these work great and are pretty darn close in optical clarity. I can identify deer, elk, turkey, etc. with no problem. I have tried them side by side at Cabelas and these were the right choice for me.Service: OK, I'm not going to lie, I'm a fan of Vortex. I have at least seven of their rifle scopes in addition to these binos. A big part of that is the Vortex warranty. If I were comparing scopes or binos and everything else was equal, I would choose Vortex for the warranty alone. The good news is that the Vortex quality and pricing is almost always better as well, so the choice is usually easy.Pro Tip: Get these little side shields for your binoculars (Field Optics Research Triple Pack Retail Packaging Assy EyeShield, Camo). They are easy to install and give you a nice seal around your eyes that keeps out unwanted light that will affect your view through the binos. They will also fold back to allow you to replace the covers when not in use. My go-to bino has been the Vortex Viper, which I adore. I picked up the Diamondback, which I really like. My thought was that if it came from Vortex it had to be good. The Diamondback glass isn't as good as the Viper, the Viper is also brighter. The Viper is also larger, heavier and $700. These little Diamondbacks are quite nice in the hand, they're sharp and contrasty.When I'm out shooting I'm schlepping around 40 pounds of gear. Anywhere I can reduce size and weight, without compromise, I'll go with it. The Diamondbacks will be my new go-to binos, providing the light is good. When the light is bad (like in the woods) I'll take the Vipers because they're brighter. If I'm out in the wetlands it will be the Diamondbacks.The Diamondbacks are optically decent. They feel good in my large hands, and they're very well built. For $130 you can't ask for more. 5
