Simply Great Little Computer simply great little computer. found a Raspberry Pi article to make a HDMI-based monitor from and old laptop screen and made a wood frame for it. Added a camera and 2 USB cameras to make a home security system. Lots of fun 5Don't believe everything you read. Was mislead to believe the SD card had NOOBS and RETROPIE. I thought I only had to plug it in and load the ROMS and I would be good to go. The card required me to connect online to download and install an OS called Raspian? I bought this specifically for the OS included to save the hassle of hours of searching and downloading and the months of having to learn programming code. Well, two days later and I am still no closer to running it than I was before I ordered it. I'll just call this an experience in futility and chalk up the money spent to an education in false advertising. Cute little electronic paperweight. Really wanted this to work for the kids for Christmas. 2At present - all seems to be working as described I procured four of these units. One for myself and three for a small programming/electronics lab for my kids' school. All arrived with all the parts, snapped together quickly and effortlessly - and the supplied card had the most recent copy of NOOBS installed - and so the kids had Raspbian PIXEL up and running with minimal help (they even configure the wifi while I was off doing something else). If I was to make one comment - this thing is WEIGHTLESS. For use with a breakout board, etc - I actually had to get some of the clear 3M heavy-duty fastener to attach it to the desk so that the unit and the breadboard didn't constantly slide all over. Not a negative - just consider that in your planning - it should be attached to something in the end. 5I am using this to strip advertising from my internet ... I am using this to strip advertising from my internet feed. I am using the user supported software "Pi-Hole" ( [...] ). Since I started using Pi-Hole, I have discovered that up to 40% of my internet activity was actually being siphoned of to feed me ads. By blocking these ads, Pi-Hole has increased my internet speed by returning that 40% of stolen bandwidth back to my use. 5Vilros kits are a logical and sensible approach to the tricky Raspberry pi Vilros package is a very sensible package for the raspberry pi 3. Gets you up and running with minimal guff. I strongly recommend getting a kit such as this one if you are going to get the Raspberry Pi circuit board. Most items in the Vilros kit are useful and strongly recommended, such as the case, the SD memory card, the HDMI cable and the power supply cord. Heat sinks sound like a good idea, but according to pp 486-487 of Exploring Raspberry Pi by Molloy, their effect is negligible (2K). I recommend If you want to reduce heat, buy an Ethernet cable and disable the WiFi. Regarding the Raspberry Pi itself (this is where one star is subtracted), working with the raspberry pi is tricky and can be frustrating at times. For one, you need to switch from UK keyboard option to US keyboard or it will not recognize the '@' symbol. Also, unlike a PC, you need to insert the memory card that comes in the kit to boot up. Also, raspberry pi is limited in that when using Raspbian, videos off the Internet on a HD TV display stutter in full screen and do not play smoothly. I have posted posts and endeavored to find and solve this problem but to no avail. I even tried to change the resolution settings on the pi, only to get a black screen. And no one seems to admit this problem exists, identify the cause of it, or attempt to solve it. Not something I expected from a raved, supposedly renown educational device!! Kodi (the x-box media center) is also a bit tricky. Must authenticate twice using another computer in order to get Youtube to work. Amazon Prime videos are incompatible with Raspberry Pi and Kodi. Takes time to figure out and activate the add-ons on Kodi to be able to access meaningful videos. Ended up using the USA1 build. Full screen videos on HD TV display runs smoothly using Kodi, which is unlike Raspbian. We use it as a media center plus second computer when our main computer is being used. In conclusion, Vilros kit is a sensible approach to the raspberry pi, but the raspberry pi itself is tricky and sometimes frustrating, but if you succeed, you can do a lot of things with it. 4Great starter pack that comes with everything a total beginner ... Great starter pack that comes with everything a total beginner would need. Yes, it does come with a getting started manual beyond the quick setup pamphlet, but it's a digital copy and it took a few days after receiving my pi did I hear word of the manual.Very easy to set up, everything works well. I went with the Vilros package (or amazon at all actually, because I was already here) because of the complimentary manual, and that it came with a case that actually fit the product! It did come with 2 mini screws that I have yet to find a home for anywhere on the case or board, so thanks for those I guess, maybe they're for a separate component, the HAT board maybe?Overall I'm pleased with this order and believe Vilros will have reliable customer support as I've already been contacted by them at this point. One small caveat, the Pi that you will receive in this kit is manufactured in PRC (People's Republic of China I have assumed), NOT the UK. If you feel compelled to find an all original UK based Pi kit, one of the recommended official manufacturers is element14. But, this product works as intended and, again, comes with the 200 page manual! 5Nice product. It works as advertised Nice product. It works as advertised. There are a lot of Raspberry Pi projects out there to try - a lot! I used mine to create a Dak Board (go ahead - look it up - Ill wait). Next project is a Magic Mirror. This little machine can stay on 24/7 and still work flawlessly. Its so small it can be hidden anywhere. This product comes with everything except the keyboard, mouse and monitor. The SD card is fully loaded so you can startup the desktop and you're ready to go. Im impressed with the quality and glad I spent a couple dollars more so its ready to start playing with. Im happy with the purchase. 5a Roku/AppleTV KILLER!!!! not a bad kit... you get everything you need to get started... i like the case, the heatsinks and the power supply... the hdmi cable worked fine... the 32GB offered a Raspian install out of the box (you can get addt'l installs if you configure wifi before installing)...i plugged two cheap 2.4GHz wireless keyboard and mouse adapters into two of the USB ports to do the install... no need for wired USB devices!the Pi 3 has enough horsepower to play video without the need for a hardware license... you *can* overclock this Pi, but you'll need a little simple command-line mojo... however, there's no need to do this... i installed the heatsinks - and despite some opinions out there, i still think it's a good idea to heatsink the networking chip...the power supply and USB voltage management on the Pi 3 provide enough amperage to power my 500GB Toshiba USB drive plugged into the Pi 3 with no problem - w00t!within a hour i had OpenELEC installed on one 16GB Sandisk microsdhc and Raspian 'Jessie' installed on the 32GB Sandisk microsdhc included with this kit... in a few minutes i had vnc service installed, configured and up on the Raspian system, allowing me to run desktop sessions on my Macbook Air through my routervlc and audacious installed quickly and easily... one tip: you may need to run 'sudo raspi-config' to force HDMI audio to avoid fade-in/fade-out audio problems if running audio and video through your HDMI cable to your TV.... slightly annoying until i figured this out - worked for me on my big 50" Viziothis is a Roku and AppleTV KILLER!!! i was so ticked off by the limitations and poor performance of my AppleTV - i'm never going back now! 5It's a tiny computer, what were you expecting? Like the title says, its just a little computer. Yes, it is slow, but when you have a computer the size of a credit card, then you shouldnt really expect it to be fast by any means. This is one of the "higher end" computers, again, still tiny, but compared to raspberry's other models, this is the fastest one. I use mine to make a private cloud server, but people have done things from media servers, to robots with these little things, it's a tiny computer, you can do a lot with a tiny computer. There's not much to say, but if you like doing stuff that involves tiny computers, or a project that doesnt need tons of processing power and just needs to stay out of your way, this is the computer for you. 5Great kit, and teh PI is awesome This is a great kit. Everything you need to start using the Pi expect for a monitor, keyboard and mouse. The PI is my first experience with an SBC, and I am hooked. I bought it specifically to control a freezer and fridge on an off-grid power system, according to time, temperature and voltage. It works great, and is actually overkill. I could have gone with a PI zero. I may do that and keep the 3 to play with for other tasks. Nice packaging and quick start guide, and everything is high quality. I will probably get another kit from this company in the future. 5
