    Very nice scanner but I wish I would have paid attention ... Very nice scanner but I wish I would have paid attention to the other reviewers that said it is NOT for a first time scanner user. I never did figure out how to program it and since there is no book, I had to go online for instructions. Not much help there either..... In the end, I ended up returning it and buying an less featured desktop model from Uniden. Let me be clear here, it's probably a terrific scanner and I take all the blame for operator error. However, since Uniden doesn't include a paper manual and calling their customer service number was not of any help, this is what caused my 3 star rating. If they know people are frustrated with their product, why not try doing something to help? 3Hard to learn, but worth the time. I'm quite happy with this scanner. Admittedly, there is a sharp learning curve. But, once you get your head wrapped around their System/Site/Group/Channel paradigm, it's an amazingly powerful scanner. Reception seems good, trunking works great. I should note that you MUST setup custom band plans if you're listening to a rebanded system! I thought this would have been done out of the box, and I almost returned it before I tracked that information down. Once I setup the custom bandplans, everything works fantastic. Audio is surprisingly good (I don't even feel the need for an external speaker in the car). In short, YES, it will take some time to learn. Throw away the manual on the CD and find the easier manual on the web. (The "easier" version still seems complex, but he explains it well.) Once you understand how things work, you'll really grow to love this scanner. 5Beware - No instruction manual Just got the scanner. It seems solid, and I expect it to be a great radio, but it comes with no printed manual at all. It includes a copy of their web site's wiki pages as it's "manual" - which would be fine if it were not sparse and if you didn't have to go through 1000 web pages to figure out how to do something super simple. I shouldn't have to watch third-party youtube videos to figure out how to program a scanner. I've built my own ham radio and I've programmed computers for 40 years, I'm not a techophobe and I'm sure I'll figure out this scanner. But it's absurd that it doesn't come with proper instructions. I'll update this review after I've figured it out. Two stars so far, because of lousy instructions. 2Too Complicated to Program We have had a hell of a time trying to program this scanner to our area. This is not for the beginner. Someone with a programming subscription might like it better. 1Great scanner & Great price I give scanner five stars with one major suggestion: make sure you know someone who has app to load frequencies or better yet, do as I did. I have friend who cloned his scanner to mine. It s very complicated to set up. If you don t have access to those people, I highly recommend let company preprogram your scanner, pay the extra $ to have them program scanner.I ve owned several scanners in my life. This by far is one of the best. I use mine in my POV with a window mount antenna and recieve good coverage. I want to hook to my base station roof mount antenna to see how far coverage is.All in all, amazing scanner 5Believe I found the One! I have had other scanners from different manufacturers and this one is the one I am looking for. I am a novice and still in the learning phase. Saying that, I recommend this scanner and I would also say use Proscan PC software (I am on Windows 10 and have no issues). Will update later. 5Do NOT attempt to update the firmware on this scanner! Uniden does NOT have the latest firmware version on their website! Don't get me wrong, this is a great analog scanner! Amazon has provided me with excellent service. But buyer beware- once you're over the initial Amazon buffer period and have owned the scanner for some time, you're completely on your own. Uniden does not provide adequate support for this scanner. The 'latest' firmware on their website is actually an older version than what comes on the scanner and if you attempt to 'update' your firmware using Uniden's update tool, your scanner will be RUINED!If you own this scanner already do NOT update the firmware! The scanner works amazingly if you use it out of the box as is and don't attempt to update it. However, I gave he product 2 stars because of the lack of support for the product the manufacturer gives (or doesn't give, for that matter). This is a warning to all who own or plan on owning the scanner. 2Hardware is awsome, software is awsome, documentation STINKS Like most Uniden scanners today, this is a phenomenal piece of equipment that does everything they say it will. Getting it to DO everything, however, can be a time consuming process and takes reading the manual - which in this case STINKS. I would recommend going to Uniden's web site and downloading the manual for the prior version of this hardware, the BCT15. Most of what this unit does, its predecessor did, so the manual is almost complete for this unit. Also, do a web search for "easy to read BCT15X manual. There is a different web based manual out there which is better than Uniden's. For software, find FreeSCAN, which, as the name implies, is free. I've had wonderful success in programming my BCT15X with this software. However, start by clicking upload -> COM setting -> Auto Detect so that the software will find your scanner. I understand the negative reviews of this scanner. If you aren't a dedicated scanner and computer hobbyist, this can be a difficult product. But it is EASY after you've taken the time to learn the system, and after that, a great scanner. 4....Where's the Operators manual?????? ....YEEEEEEHAAA!!! Not for the beginner....unless you want to study and WEB search for the operating modes/instructions and set it up. Otherwise ...if you are familiar and can understand acronyms and obscure operational instructions ...... this scanner is awesome! I've been working with it and purchased a Garmin GPS GPS18X PC from amazon with the Rs232 connector for the rear port. I tried running it with WIN10 on a Toshiba Satellite and it was a disaster. I have been have real serious issues and glitches with WIN 10 with all my HAM hardware and software. I tried it on my WIN 8.1, WIN 7.......and the winner is WIN XP!!! This scanner will scare heck out of you with a GPS hooked up to it. My thoughts again..... New microsoft technology is not really friendly with this older hi tech gear!! Just my thoughts!!! (Thank god) Overall, buttons are smooth, a lot of functionality to get use to. I learn by pressing everything. Box came with 3 different power sources (car/direct wire/power bank), antenna and programming CD with cable. 4
