Customer Reviews

Cannot recommend this product I cannot recommend this UV filter. I have a Tamron 150-600mm lens that I use for birding and wildlife photography. This filter produced terrible artifacts in my images, which was worst at the longest focal lengths. Most of my photos with this filter have a wavy, motion-like artifact in the unfocused regions, and the focused areas appeared fuzzy. Please see the example photographs take at 600mm. The first photo (darker image) is with the filter, the second (brighter) image is without. 1Good filter for price, retaining ring has no slots to remove it. The one I received in May 2017 did not have a retaining ring with slots which foiled my plan to remove the retaining ring and put solar film in there. Since it is not advertised as having a removable retaining ring I cannot dock it for that. So this becomes my main UV filter while the one I already had (a Vivitar) was used to make a solar filter. It does accept another filter on top (I tried the Vivitar) so you could make a sandwich with solar film in between. Personally, the Vivitar ( Vivitar Series 1 VIV-UV-95 Multi Coated UV Filter Mounts Vivitar 500mr and 500mm, 95-mm ) feels a bit higher quality to me in feel and finish (of the metal) and for the extra couple of bucks would by that one again if buying another. Plus, the Vivitar has the retaining ring slots. As for quality of the glass, it seems fine. I can't say that I notice any negative PQ effects but I am certainly not an expert. One star lost since I feel the Vivitar is a better filter and it can't be better if this is 5 stars. 4Vivitar-Sakar single coated, stay away The filter I received is (1) NOT Pro Series (2) NOT multi-coated (3) NOT the same as in the picture (the printing on the side of the filter is quite different). The filter is made by Vivitar/Sakar, notorious low-rent cheapie brands. Stay away. 1Seller asks for positive review. Offers gift. Filter is thin, light, and flimsy. Don't know if it causes distortion or not but I won't chance it. I'll transport my lens with this on but will remove before taking any pictures. And will suck it up and buy a known-brand replacement filter at a much higher price. The seller suggets buyers leave a 4 star or above rating on Amazon. Raters get a freebie gift. If I had known that other buyers could be swayed to leave good reviews in order to get a gift I wouldn't have purchased. 2Decent Basic Clear Filter/ Front Lens Element Shield First I will note did not use this filter in it it's normal state I only used it for the glass to construct a solar filter. Before I did anything I examined the glass it is very clear unblemished and smooth and flat, no smears or other imperfections that I could see under magnification.Sounds like optical quality glass to me.Digital cameras have a UV filter built into the sensor unit so are not effected by UV, I have personally seen no real difference with a UV filter on or off. There may be a big difference if used on a film camera. The only real benefit to use a UV filter like this on a digital camera is to provide some lens protection, keep in mind this is built as a "filter" not lens protector so it is not constructed as one.Lens protectors are actually manufactured for just that purpose. That leads to the next point, filter construction. The filter ring is low profile and thin so vignetting should not be much issue. The ring is aluminum and the retaining ring is plastic which is easily pried out (perfect for my use) the threads are fine so if you have course thread may be tricky for you to get on (and off) your lens, or stacking on another filter. It did go on my Sigma 50-500 without to much trouble, course thread on that.Back to the protector part I still think this would do the job of shielding your lens from a bump into a door knob or such, hopefully you never have to find out first hand!It is certainly better than having nothing there at all.Another thing to note about this filter is the lack of coating, at least the kind that is used on other much more expensive ones.It says Multi-Coating on the ring but Multi-Coating can be seen as a yellowish green tint, I did not see it present on this filter.I have high end expensive UV filters and the tint is clearly visible at certain angles. The filter could be coated with something just not sure what.Coating increases light transmission and so reduces flair.I give this four stars since it did the job for me and appears to be a good basic Clear Lens Filter/ Protector/ Shield. You certainly cannot beat the price. 4Not a Pro Series Filter for Nikon Pro Series Lenses This is not a Pro Series filter although it is listed as being for many of Nikon's Pro series lenses. This filter is advertised as a Pro series filter. Here is how Amazon Orders identified it to me "77mm Pro series Multi-Coated High Resolution Digital Ultraviolet Filter For Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Autofocus Lens, Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-2. . ." As one reviewer has explained regarding the 67mm equivalent of this filter, I now learn, "The filter I received is (1) NOT Pro Series (2) NOT multi-coated . . . The filter is made by Vivitar/Sakar, notorious low-rent cheapie brands. Stay away." I have also learned from experience and careful inspection that this filter is not seriously multicoated. It provides no multicolored reflections at all. It easily generates flare and white blotches in photographs where it catches the light badly. It is worse sometimes than no filter at all. There is no way I am going to use this filter with a Nikon D7100 and Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM FLD lens for which I intended it. I cannot imagine a knowledgeable owner of a professional lens for the Nikon mount using this filter on such a lens either . I thought the seller had gotten a great deal on a bulk purchase of quality professional filters for professional lenses or something like that and that is why the price is so low.The problem now is the burden on me in terms of time, bother and expense to correct this matter by seeking a refund and returning it. It is not worthwhile given the money involved so I am simply going to swallow it, grimace, write this review and give the seller a bad rating for misleading me. (I have just learned that, to his credit, the seller has agreed to refund my purchase price without requiring that I return the filter.) My larger hope here is others won't get duped into believing this is a Pro series filter for Nikon Pro series lenses as I was. Now, I have to go back to Amazon and buy a decent filter, pay for it and again wait for it to arrive. 2Tronixpro 95mm multicoated filter It's always good to be able to write a good product review, unfortunately, this isn't one. We don't expect miracles, after all it's a $12.00 filter, but we should at least be able to easily screw it onto the lens. The good points; the filter glass didn't arrive in pieces, and the filter pouch was made of a nylon material. Careful examination of the glass under illumination and magnification reveal this filter has absolutely no sign of having any multi-coating(s) unlike other filters we own. Also (critical for any filter) the threads feel gritty and don't allow for properly threading onto the lens. We cleaned the threads carefully using a brush and new lens cloth before each attempt, but it still felt as if particles of sand or ground glass were embedded. Rather than ruin the threads on our lens, we put this filter aside. A different filter from a different company threaded onto the lens effortlessly. It's obvious that either the manufacturing tolerances are substandard (lack of QC) or poor materials are to blame for the threading problem. Shame on the company for saying this is multi-coated.There was a printed scrap of paper in the carton, which listed a name and email address, of a Jeff Taylor, supposedly the President of the company. The note advises if a customer had any issues 'whatsoever' to contact him. We decided to give Mr. Taylor a chance to comment on specific problems prior to posting this review, however the email bounced; no such address exists. That was strike number three; 1) no coating(s) on the filter as advertised, 2) the filter threads are substandard, feel gritty and won't screw on properly, and 3), The president and/or his email are non-existent. This product doesn't inspire confidence, and in our opinion, isn't worth the effort and/or expense involved in return. If the email to the 'president' hadn't bounced, we might have given the company a second chance. We recommend that Amazonians give this filter and company a wide berth, and choose a higher-quality filter from a different manufacturer. 1if you using this lens and you want to get the best images, either don't use the filter when you're ... Another example of "you get what you pay for". I just could not get my Tamrom 150-600 to have a sharp focus. I thought it was the lens and I went through a bunch of testing but couldn't find the problem. Then I tried the focusing tests without this filter. The images were sharp as a tack. So, if you using this lens and you want to get the best images, either don't use the filter when you're shooting or spend the $80-$100 for a filter that uses "Schott glass" or "White Water glass".Try this one. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000BZLCL/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 1terrible quality, renders photos faded and ugly bokeh this filter causes very ugly and noticeable haze and bokeh distortion on my nikon 200-500mm lens. without the filter, images are clear, crisp, and the out of focus sections are smooth. when the filter is put on, images look hazy and very ugly and prominent lines appear in the bokeh. i can assure that there was no smudging or damage to the filter that i could see. this is the only filter ive ever bought that had such noticeable effects.i reached out to the customer service slip inside the packaging to fix the issue and found no help.the two images are with and without the filter attached 1No good on Sigma 150-600mm, produces blurred images I tried it for my Sigma 150-600mm Sports and produced blurred images. My rating here is for the compatibility with this particular lens.So this filter seems to work fine with other lenses. Before buying this filter, I bought a cheap CPL for my Sigma 150-500mm and got blurred images.According to experts, high end filter(cost $100+- range) won't cause the problem. But I gave up using a CPL all together and have been using 150-500mm without any filters. Now for my newest lens 150-600mmSP, I went a cheap filter again and got blurred images. It is bad from close distance to infinity(showing here is infinity comparison)...see a pic with & without the filter. So I am giving up using any filters for now.I keep checking Amazon reviews and B/H and hope to find good one $30-$50 range. 2
