Customer Reviews

Extremely poor fit on 9 pin side This was my first Firewire cord, and I suspect the same is true of many of the positive reviewers here. Like them, I was originally very happy with this cord. It worked, and the price was fantastic. However, I noticed that the 9 pin connector was always very loose, and never "clicked" in place, even though I pushed the cord as far as it would go. My initial thought was "Boy, Firewire really has a bad connector design."Well, after buying another Firewire cord from a more reputable source (LaCie) I discovered that Firewire cables are actually incredibly secure! There is just something very wrong with the design of these cords! As far as I can tell, the connector is a bit too short on the 800 end of these cables, and thus they can't be inserted far enough to engage the mechanism that locks them into place (i.e. the 'click' you feel when plugging in a USB cable, or a better made Firewire cable, it turns out).As such, I recommend users stay far away from these cables. Sure, they're cheap, but if your cable comes out accidentally without you having properly unmounted your external drive, it's highly likely that your hard drive will be corrupted. It's worth it to buy good cables. Your data is worth a lot more than the few dollars saved by going with a cut-rate cable company. 2Careful about switched Tripp Lite cables Bought what was supposed to be Tripp Lite cables from Cablemart, but was sent some generic Firewire 800 cable. Cablemart quickly refunded my money and let me keep the generic cable after I made a complaint, which was very nice. They said that their warehouse stocks both cables and that when the Tripp Lite was not available the warehouse sent me the generic one without mentioning the switch. I can't help but wonder, though, if many people DON'T catch the switch, if and when it happens with their orders. I gave this product 3 stars, even though the cable I received is not a Tripp Lite, because I wanted to comment about my experience, but not overly downgrade Tripp Lite at the same time. Although the generic cable I was given seems to be slightly loose in the socket, it doesn't drop the Firewire connection very often, as long as I don't move or shake the computer too much. 3Does the job! Came well packaged, hooked it up easily to my Firewire Card and to my RME Fireface 800 and everything is working perfectly! BOOM! Great value, great performance! Can't review durability since it is still new. 5Works great, a bargain I bought this cord to connect a new 1TB WD external drive to my old Mac G5 tower--I needed to go from Firewire 800 (the WD drive) to 400 (the Mac). (The drive, of course, operates at the slower speed but when if I want to use it on a computer with Firewire 800, all I have to do is upgrade the cord.) This cord works perfectly and I'm glad it's 6' long because it gives me enough room to move it away from my work area a bit and clear up some desk space. I now have five external drives going on my desk and it's getting a little bit nuts with cords, so having one that's this long really is quite helpful.I know nothing of the technical quality of cords, but this works, it's like half the price (or less) than other brands and I can think of other things I'd rather spend the money on than cords. 5great price, cable works fine I purchased a similar cable from a retail store for $35 because I needed one right away for a connection from an interface to my computer. The cable I bought worked fine, no problems. I then went online and purchased this one for under $10. When it came in I disconnected the $35 cable and installed the Tripp one. The connection from the interface to the computer was the same exact quality as the more expensive one.Needless to say, I packed up the $35 one, put it in its original package and took it with the receipt back to the store and got a refund. I could see no need to pay over TRIPLE the price for the very same cable. I would recommend this cable as it is still in use with no problems.Don't overpay when you don't have to. These cables work fine. 4Disappointed I tend to buy the cheap cables off of Amazon since they basically work the same as any other expensive cable you can buy. I definitely like saving money on something that will do the same thing. However, I was disappointed with this cable. For one, not that it really matters, the cable that arrived was clear instead of black like shown in the picture. I kind of like the product I receive to match what is shown. But the actual problem I had with it was as soon as I plugged it into my Macbook Pro, my computer almost seemed to short out. It completely shut off and disabled my battery. It was the most bizarre thing. So, with the cable still plugged in, in addition to plugging my Macbook into the charger, I attempted again to transfer data with the cable. It would not work. I jiggled the cable to see what would happen, and my computer shut off again. Needless to say, I didn't want any further damage to happen to my computer so I immediately unplugged it after that. After the cable was disconnected, I turned the power back on again and everything went back to normal. I'm not sure what the cause was, but what I do know is that I didn't want to use that cable anymore since my Mac was working just fine before. Not sure if it was a fluke that I got a bad cable or if they are all like that. Luckily Amazon is great with returns, so I was sure to send this one back asap. 1This was supposed to be a Tripp Lite cable... This did not arrive in a Tripp Lite-branded bag, despite the assurance on this product page According to the blurb on this page, I should not accept this, as it appears to be a substitute. The FW400 connector is NOT gold-plated as in the photo on this page, nor do the molded plastic connector housings look like those on the pictured Tripp Lite cable. This impostor cable was sold by MarginMart: caveat emptor, and Amazon please clean up your "Marketplace." 1Cable worked although it was hard to insert Did what it was supposed to, although one end was hard to get into the machine as the gold end apparently wasn't flush with the plastic casing, forcing me to ram the thing into the laptop port until it seated. Otherwise I've had nothing but good experiences with Tripp Lite products. 4Converter--sometimes. Not sure...could be a number of issues. Downloaded the firmware update for my WD my book. It worked at first, then Win 7 no longer recognized it. Changed the driver to "legacy" according to Win 7 folks and worked again for a bit, then dropped off. The cable quality appeared good. The ends fit and clicked into place. I believe that the problem is firewire 800 to esata/1394a. For the price, it was worth the try. The transfer rates weren't all that great or so much better than USB. Ultimately, I'd have to buy a firewire 800 card, then use the cable, but that's not worth it on my budget. 3Doesn't fit in FireWire 800 port! Based on other comments here, I'm not sure this is actually a Tripp Lite cable. It came in a Tripp Lite bag, but nowhere on the cable does it say Tripp Lite, nor do any of the numbers on the cable match numbers on the bag.Regardless of the brand or manufacturer, it just doesn't work. It refused to fit in my computer's FireWire 800 port. I tried on some other computers and had the same result, so it appears that the connector is not sized properly. Suspecting the cable might be the cause, I purchased another FireWire 800 cable from a different manufacturer, and it fit in all my computers just fine. I'll gladly pay a few bucks more for something that actually works. 1
