Customer Reviews

The last four 5-port gigabit switches I purchased are very noisy I've purchased over a dozen of different Trendnet IT products over the past four (or so) years. I also recommend this company to all of my clients. Recently, however, I started noticing that all of the 5-port gigabit switches are very noisy. The static (high-pitch) noise seems to originate from the metal housings (not the power adapters). This issue has been reported by several of my clients. It's not an issue if you are in a busy office, but if you work in a semi-quite office and a switch is close to your desk you can't help but notice it. I've already replaced one in my office because it was driving me nuts.To Trendnet: please take a look at this issue and report back. Until I hear from you I won't be purchasing your 5- or 8-port switches. Thank you. 3Excellent, user-friendly switch for expanding ethernet ports This switch was perfect for doing what I needed: expanding one ether drop in my new basement into a few (up to four, as you need one port for the input). It allowed me to get rid of that annoying wifi lag when utilizing my new LG Smart TV.The switch is well built with a full metal case and good quality ports. The only design detail that I would change would be to make the switch slightly wider and to locate the power on the rear (you can see the plug coming out of the left side). The switch is exceedingly easy to install: connect power, connect the input and output ethernet ports, look for the indicator lights on the front and you are done. The trifold manual included is in several different languages and has clear directions, both written and drawn, of how to install the switch (if you need them). There is also a matrix to list the different green and amber indicator lights and what all possible combinations mean.I ordered two of these switches a few months apart, the second one I received yesterday. Both switches utilize a 5.0V, 1.0A output power supply but as you can see, the design of the two was different. The smaller power supply came with the most recently purchased switch. Both power supplies are 100-240V in a two prong configuration so, with the appropriate country adaptor, these should work world wide. Users in Japan would be able to plug straight into the wall. 5Bought a lemon and I am all out of sugarThis was delivered today. Simple plug and play into USB after screwing in the antenna. First sign of an issue was trying to download the driver because I do not have a CD drive. It was taking a very long time; So I used my previous micro ASUS adapter to download the drivers. After installing drivers and reconnecting the adapter, I ran a speed test and it was only kicking out 5mbps down... Ok this is a problem. I called tech support and they are very friendly but there is nothing they can troubleshoot and almost didn't believe my normal speeds on similar products of 300 down and 500 up when connected to a Asus RT88u router on a Gigabit ISP. Needless to say I am going to return this for a refund and hope my next purchase isn't a Lemon.Overall - I will give this a 2 star because Support was at least up front and honest in a very polite way. Personally I will not say don't buy it if you are looking to upgrade but it is never fun receiving something you expect to do great and you end up with a dud.2Decent Product, Good Value This review is for the 5-port switch TEG-S50ES.The unit arrived in a padded envelope - which I was disappointed with as this is a technical piece of hardware that could be easily damaged if banged around too much However the TRENDnet packaging box used multiple cardboard inserts to secure the switch inside so the item arrived undamaged. I really appreciate that TRENDnet! The switch is very tight and legit. The two screws holding the top metal plate to the bottom metal frame are secure and plumb - they are NOT wedged in at an angle. This shows that the manufacturing assembly was well done. The switch itself is not 'loose' in any way, the gauge metal of the stamped steel used in it's construction is thick enough to resist any torsion I apply with my hands. I grasp it on opposite edges and try to twist it and it does not move. As far as material quality of construction/manufacturing I find this item to be excellent. The switch itself has venting holes on the sides to allow adequate airflow. At the time I am writing this review I have utilized the switch on 24/7 operation next to my desk out of the sun in an ambient air temperature of approx 68F with my NAS and pihole plugged into it. There appears to be no overheating in the slightest, the box never even gets really warm. I know that in high-bandwidth/throughput office environments the load on the switch will be considerably higher but I feel confident in saying that the quality of the device is very good. I cannot say specifically what the operating conditions will be under other circumstances, but feel confident enough to suggest that this unit will prove itself at bare minimum adequate for whatever networking environment you put it in.The web GUI for setup is pretty simple and well documented on the TRENDnet product page. The 'smart' part of this switch is loaded with multiple options, many of which may not necessarily be of use to the 'average' homelab/end user experience. However I believe it's better to have these options and not need them that to need them but not have them available, and you never know what your future needs might be. Personally I like having these options to 'tinker' with and conduct self-guided learning with networking principles in an environment without deadlines - like my home.Other posts mention that you should update/upgrade the firmware as soon as you get it. I concur, with the caveat that you make a backup of whatever firmware came as stock. The upgrade process, for me, was not overly difficult - but the unit did seem to 'stall' at the 99% point. After waiting about 5 minutes I closed the browser window, manually disabled the RJ45 port, then re-initialized both. No Problems.I have not had a chance to 'play' with many of the 'advanced' options of the switch. At the moment I'm just using it as a 'dumb' switch except I have the ability to set static IPs. Further testing of the capabilities will come after I work on further tuning my network, but as of this moment I'm satisfied.I would recommend this product. I viewed multiple products from multiple sellers and multiple brands before deciding on this unit. Do your own research, but know that my search led me to this product and that I am satisfied with my purchase. 4AWESOME!!I could always get to the back of the house, but never into the basement, especially the far end. Router is at one end of the house, computers all over. I can even go out to the barn with this thing +- about 170' through the wall of the house, and the wall of the barn. AWESOME!!!!5MUCH BETTER THAN I EVEN ANTICIPATEDI work from home on a server that is 1,400 miles away. I work upstairs on a desktop that probably 30ft (direct line) from the wifi router. On top of that, I work on some very high memory demand CAD files. I have been working on numerous large CAD files with large assemblies the lag has been no different than you would expect if you were working in the office. I've been very surprised how seamless and solid the connection has been for me with this device. I really can't say enough about it! It has performed far beyond my expectations! What are you doing? Just buy the thing - you won't regret it.5A little pricey for inconsistencyMoved the desktop into a room away from the router, so I got this one based on various reviews online. I have no baseline to compare it to as far as desktops or usb wifi adaptors, but the speed I got was slower than my laptop or my smartphone and other tablets (testing through speedtest). I tested a few times (at different times of day) and got really inconsistent speeds via this adaptor. Of course, the desktop has a bunch of stuff running so there are those variables. I ended up running a powerline adaptor into the room and got more consistent speeds, but roughly the same max speed. It may work for you; it may not. I feel I should have tried a cheaper adaptor first just to test.3Good speeds, but high pitched noise Last Update: 5-22-2018Returned both of the green switches and went with the D-Link 5-Port Unmanaged Gigabit Switch (GO-SW-5G). The D-Link one makes zero noise and is just as fast. I wish the TRENDnet one wouldn't have made the high pitched noise.5-21-2018Received my replacement bright and early this morning and the power supply makes the same high pitched noise / squeal. Other people can't hear it, but I can hear it clearly and it gives me a huge headache (I wanted to use this in the office). Lowering my review down to 3 stars since my old 5 port TRENDnet switches never really made any noise. Although I swore by TRENDnet, I will have to give another brand a try for the home office.-------5-19-2018Purchased my third one and it actually makes a really high pitched noise while all my other identical ones do not. I am returning and reordering.-----One of the best switches out there. I have used a few of these over the years with no issues.I have 1 of them sitting in my hot attic and its been fine for over a year, never a problem. 3Nice little guy to have behind the TV. I have this behind my TV where I have my game consoles and NAS/Steam streaming box. Two months uptime and no issues. I like to have all my devices hardwired when possible so this was nice to have so I only had to run one line to my stuff, then made my own 2-3 foot cables to each device on the TV stand. 5An easy way to add ethernet connections to all your devices! Wifi just wasn't cutting it for online gaming, but the router is not near the two Xboxs and computer in the basement. This device was the answer! All I had to do was run an Ethernet cable from the router to where the first device was located and plug the Ethernet cable into this switch. Next, I connect this switch with another Ethernet cable to the Xbox. Then, I can run an Ethernet cable along the wall to the next device. So in essence daisy chaining these together in order to provide Ethernet connections to my three devices. Now, all three devices have lightening fast internet from a single router connection to provide lag-free online gaming! Works like a charm and would definitely recommend to others! 5Greater speed and signal. Easy to install.I really liked how easy it was to set up and install. Attach the antennas to the adapter, plug the cord into the adapter and then into a USB 3 port on the computer. Install the driver and it works great. It is actually faster then the fast Network card installed on my Desktop at the same distance to the router. I like it so much I am going to order another one.5Ordered on Amazon, TRENDnet items are not "new" These items have a long life on shelves, it appears. I ordered two NEW switches, a five and 16 port models. Both came in factory sealed boxes, although the five port had obviously been opened before being shipped to me. The five port has an internal date 0f 2017, this is now 2019, so it is two years old. The 16 port unit has an internal date of 2016 and an internal dating on three parts of 2013, 2014, and 2015. This is 2019. Now, I purchase very up to date, state of the art networking cables, mesh routers and then these switches. A home network is limited to its least capable component. I will test these, but I am not happy. I expect Amazon to check and certify that a new item is not old. Do I expect any help? Well, not from TRENDNET, who is party to this deception, they did it. They failed tech support by choosing to send old equipment to a customer expecting something new, not new to him, but actually state of the art new. I am not happy to have switched from Netgear equipment, but mine needed upgrading and I chose what I thought was a better product. It is not better if it is older. In fact, my two units, purchased together, are not compatible with each other, one more than year older than the other. No one in this modern world thinks products made a year or more apart are still identical, in general there is a geometric improvement over time in digital products. Please Amazon, police this situation. And please TRENDnet, be upfront. At best a two or more year old electronic product retains only a small fraction of its retail selling price. This warrants an action against Amazon and TRENDnet for false retailing. I have been an Amazon customer for 25 years, mostly with good results. This is, however, unacceptable. 3Took a Nighthawk 1900 AC with bad connection and did a few thingsDay 1: 4/5 stars. Simple, small, functional extender. OSX install requires a reboot and security elevation - but I can confirm it's still working on MacOS High Sierra. Also, I ordered at 11:50AM and had by 7PM - so one of these stars goes to Amazon Prime.Took a Nighthawk 1900 AC with bad connection and did a few things:1. Allowed me to actually connect where my 2015 MBP wouldn't connect on 1300 Mbps2. Raised my basement throughput from 30Mbps to 210Mbps (partially because of the hike in rate of the 5Ghz connection)3. Gave me a secondary GUI for WiFi connection that is decent.Device is well sized... could probably put the 4 antenna in the elastic pen holders that's in travel backpacks -- they are dead simple to remove.Still want to connect it to my USB 3.0 hub and stress test during other heavy software developer conditions, but so far I'm golden. I'll update this if it gets better or worse - but it was worth video calls not having jitter for me.4Cuts off and reconnects constantlyIt has great range, sure, but it keeps doing as the title says. It's insanely annoying. I tried multiple drivers and it always does the same thing. The other cons are that it's ugly and huge. The only pro besides range is that, because it's connected via a cable, you can position is however you like or hide it. Where with other USB adapters or PCI-E it sticks out of your PC. If only it were reliable returning and sticking to a cheaper one I had.1works well in condoThis adapter made a real difference in wifi connectivity in my condo. The router is only about 30 feet from the desktop that is using the adapter, but it is separated by three walls that have metal studs. Plus, all floors and ceilings are concrete. Prior to installing the adapter, the connection to the wifi was routinely lost or weak. After installation, the connection is strong and reliable.5It works on Ubuntu but requires some skillsIt does work on Ubuntu 1804. To use it you need to download a driver from Github, compile it, and install the kernel module. In other words, don't expect to use this on Ubuntu unless you're good at such things. It also can work perfectly well as a hotspot on Ubuntu. Again, you need to know what you're doing to make that happen. I'm giving it less than 5 stars because it would be great if the manufacturer would get the necessary modules included in Ubuntu.4DID not Work as AdvertisedI am sending this one back and ill write a second review when it gets here but for now these are the issuesI ran the instalation disk the LED light never turned onWould not work called tech support, the guy sounded like he hated his lifeWent through the device manager trendnet to the drivers and the latest driver was from microsoft not real tech like it was supposed to be.I changed it to real tech which was last updated in 2015. The light finally worked but it still kept dropping the internet. I am not even that far from the router. This is stupid. He told me to send it back and ill up date this review when i get the second one. Lets see if its just this one product.SO far i am really unhappynot easy to set updoes not take minutesdoes not workdoes not find 5g networkBOX FULL OF LIES!1Warning: The Switch that is pictured is not the one that you get. Buyer beware. The picture that is displayed on the Amazon site is not the switch that you get. The one that is pictured is Vers.3.0R, which has been discontinued. The one that you will get is Vers.4.0R. While functionally the same, TrENDnet in their infinite wisdom, has redesigned the device display and power input interface. You have only a single set of five LEDs displaying the connection status. There is no separate set of LEDs for activity. They also have moved the DC power input to the side of the box for some odd reason, which is a stupid design change. No longer is the power input in the back and out of sight. Attached to this review is what you will get, not the one you see on the web page. 3
