Customer Reviews

Works on Nintendo Switch This device (at least at the time I purchased it) seems to have the same chipset as the official Nintendo Switch LAN, except this one is about $12 cheaper.Plugged it in, selected wired connection, no problem. 5MAJOR WORKAROUND AVAILABLE FOR MAC 10.13.4 to 10.13.6 Beta spray time! Okay, this model doesn't work on apple computers that have accepted the system updates since about... April 2018? This is not solely TRENDnet's fault - many universal docks were shut down when Apple released the 10.13.4 update. 10.14 (which will be called Mojave) will fix this problem, and it should no longer be an issue at that point!HERE'S THE NEWS YOU WANT: I HAVE FOUND A WORKAROUND TO MAKE 1 MONITOR WORK! These universal docks all depend on DisplayLink drivers. DisplayLink has released a beta version with step-by-step instructions to get this dock to work with 1 monitor for the time being! I've downloaded it, and it's working beautifully!!! Google "DisplayLink MacOS Software", and download the DisplayLink Driver 4.3 beta 5, and follow the instructions in the FAQ link above the download link. This will get you by for a while until Mojave is released, which should be very soon!!!! 5Does in fact work with macOS Mojave 10.14.2; just requires manual installation of the driver first Some previous reviewers from 2018 commented on how this unit doesn't work with a Mac... those issues no longer exist with the latest macOS at the time of this review (10.14.2 Mojave). However, it is NOT simply plug & play like most people might expect.... you need to go to the TrendNet support site for this product and download the driver for macOS. Once I installed that baby I was good to go.... if you do it right you'll see the adapter show up as "AX88179 USB 3.0" in your network settings. I tested this unit out on my Raspberry Pi 3 B and B+ as well... it was plug & play... sounds like the same will be the case with Windows, but I don't have a PC so I haven't tested that.I only have 200Mbps internet so I didn't get to test the full capabilities of this unit - but it certainly performed better than my older model 10/100 adapter from Apple, which of course maxed out around 100Mbps. 5Nintendo Switch Plug & Play I bought both the Trendnet and the UGreen. Both worked immediately, both had identical performance: 60 meg down, 20 up. This an improvement from 50 down and 5 up. I've much more performance available, so either the Switch, the ASIC doing the USB to Ethernet conversion, or the test site is the new bottleneck. Still a 20% download improvement in bandwidth for $13 is just fine.Meanwhile both cables will place an upward pressure on the switch (a result of the design of thh doc cable management). Minor attention should be paid to ensure the Switch is properly seated. Towards the tiny little end late me say this:The UGreen is both black, which matches the dock color and thus looks more "factory", and is slightly longer. Perhaps 1/2/ to 3/4" longer. That and a litle enforced cable twisting seemd to help the dock seating. All other things being equal I'll use the UGreen and give the Trend away. 5Works great - go to the Trendnet site for the latest downloadable drivers I purchased this device along with a "Upgraded Z83-F Fanless MINI PC Desktop, 4GB/32GB Intel Atom x5-Z8350 (up to 1.92 GHz) HD Graphics 400/ 4K/ 2.4G+5.8G WiFi/ 1000Mbps LAN/ BT4.0 [VGA&HDMI Dual Output] [Support Windows 10 64-Bit]" also from Amazon. The initial set up with the enclosed CD rom resulted in a repeated request to reset the computer but it would not support 2 monitors. At one point the error message said the software was incompatible with my mini-PC.Ultimately I went to the Trendnet website, downloaded the drivers, got a warning they might not work, installed them and I've got two displays! The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star was because I feel the CD version should have looked for later updates. 4Lots and lots of problems in Windows 10 I've had good experience with Trendnet products, until this. Not only are the Realtek drivers from the mfgr. web site hard to install -- they didn't digitally sign them, which I guess is partly Realtek's fault -- but glitchy to the point of being unusable. The generic MS version (no signature issues) aren't completely reliable either. The Ethernet connection will seem to work fine for anywhere from 4 to 48 hours, then drop out, usually in the middle of the something important whether "strenuous" or not. Consulting Event Viewer revealed nothing. Depending on the driver choice it would then vanish from the ncpa.cpl window and require you to reboot to use the connection again. My adapter's model H/W revision is 2.0R, by the way. I have an ASIX-based Gigabit adapter that has never given me such grief.Eventually giving up on the LAN features I decided to skip that and just make use of the USB 3.0 hub-- which was just as flaky, dropping out during copying files, etc. What a waste of time! 2USB 3 (TU3-ETG) not compatible with MacBook Pro or ChromeCast I did not have good experiences with the USB 3 Gigabit ethernet adapter (TU3-ETG). A Google ChromeCast (version 2) did not recognize the module. This is important because TrendNET is marketing multiple USB ethernet adapter dongles on the same Amazon page. Reviews that say a TrendNET module worked for their Chromecast are talking about the USB 2 version (TU2 models). The TU3 (USB3) models do not work with ChromeCast. On a MacBook Pro running OS X version 10.11, drivers were required to be installed. After installation, the machine became unstable, and no internet functions worked (not even on built-in wifi or built-in ethernet). The machine became slow and unresponsive. Uninstalling the drivers resolved the problems. For these reasons this dongle was not useful to me. 2Does not work with Mac 10.13.4 Unfortunately the item does not work as advertised. I purchased this based on Trednet stating that it works with Macs. The issue: Everything except for the external monitor works like it should when connected. There is a No signal message on my ext monitor. The source of the problem is Apple s update to their DeviceLink. The most recent 10.13.4 build prevents this device from sending/receiving a signal to a plugged in external monitor. The reason I gave this 2 stars:The problem of the monitor not working is due to Apple s update. However, Trendnet knows of this issue but failed to update their Amazon description to match their company s website. It s misleading and cost me time and money (spending more time troubleshooting than working). The manufacturers website actually mentions the issue but there s no mention of it her on Amazon.Summary:To be honest, I very much like the look and form factor and the features. But the bottom line is that the device doesn t work with a Mac OS build 10.13.4 and Trendnet failed to update the Amazon description to what is (to them) a known issue.*Also the courier used UPS dropped it off at the wrong house. This did not affect my rating. 2Surprise: No Mac support above 10.13.3! Just got the unit today and went to their website to download the software and I get this message: "June 12, 2018 Installaing (sp) macOS 10.13.4 will cause any connected displays to go blank after the OS update when using the latest driver. Extended or mirror displays continue to work as expected in macOS 10.13.3, and we can only recommend that you stay on macOS 10.13.3 or earlier if you require this feature and have not already updated. Functionality such as Ethernet and audio are unaffected. We are working on a fix and updates will be posted on product download pages once available." That was June and this is September so they must not be working on the fix too hard; 10.13.6 is the current version of macOS.. The second monitor connection is one of the reasons I bought this unit. Waited 29 minutes on hold to talk to Trendnet support and they disconnected as soon as they answered the call. I'll look for a replacement and send this back. 2Tested and works with both a Mac and a Win 10 laptops I've tested this Doc with both a Mac and a Win 10 PC and both of them have no issues connecting* Using both the DVI & HDMI ports for the monitor out* Network and USB items plug in flawlessly* Small compact and fits perfectly between both my monitors snugly* Power cord is more than generous in length***There are two small screws on the bottom if you wanted to lay the doc flat, but didn't need that option with my setup*** 5
