Customer Reviews

its not terrible, but i would look elsewhere about the best a KVM could hope for is to work and generally go unnoticed. this misses the mark on that point.the issues ive encountered:- the mouse i have seems to have stopped working with it most of the time. the keyboard is fine though- it requires resetting every now and then when even the keyboard isn't detected, which is made even more inconvenient by it drawing power from the PCs its connected to in addition to the included wall-wort, so you have to unscrew each connection on the back.- it does not come with any of the computer-side cables. granted, it doesn't say it does, but it could state that more clearly. 2Very pleased so far TRENDnet 2-Port USB KVM Switch and Cable Kit. I started working from home and needed a way to switch between my work laptop and my home system. I have 4 monitors on my laptop, and 2 on my home system.. I didn't want to spend $500 or more on a multi-monitor KVM switch. Instead I bought two of these, and one and now I can switch two monitors, mouse and keyboard between the two systems. So far I have been pleasantly surprised at how well they work. I have not had any problems switching. They switch pretty much instantly. I have only lost my monitor settings once in about 2 weeks of using them, but I think I was doing something out of the ordinary at the time.Besides saving money, I think buying multiple of these really inexpensive KVMs has several advantages over buying one really expensive multi-monitor KVM:1) If one goes out, you just replace the one, very cheaply. Instead of losing a $500 device, you only lose a $20 device.2) You get two USB ports with each KVM, so you have more options on how to configure your devices. For example, I have my mouse and keyboard on the KVM for my main monitor, but I have my wireless headset on my secondary monitor. That way, I can choose to leave my headset attached to my work laptop while temporarily switching just my main monitor to my personal computer,3) These are very lightweight and they take up very little space.4) With these being so inexpensive, you could buy extra ones to switch just certain devices without switching a monitor. For example, I may buy another one to put just my headset on. It's kind of overkill, but it's a possibility. The only potential disadvantage is that you have to press multiple buttons to switch each monitor or device. But I think having the ability to switch only the devices you want is actually an advantage. So I am very pleased with my setup and with these KVMs. If anything changes, like if they conk out quickly, I will update this review. 5Didn't Work for Me I don't know if this unit was defective, or it just doesn't work, but I had to return it. I tried to use it with two Linux boxes and a wired USB keyboard and mouse. Both keyboard and mouse worked on one box, but I got an interrupt error on the other box, and neither the keyboard nor the mouse would work on it. I suspect the combined USB cable for the mouse and keyboard that this KVM uses might be the cause of the interrupt error, though since it worked on one machine and not the other, I think it might have been the motherboard/BIOS of the affected machine. The scroll lock hot key to switch machines didn't work at all. The other annoying thing was that with both machines off, all the lights on the keyboard remained lit. I power-cycled the KVM as advised in the Troubleshooting section of the manual, but it made no difference.I ended up getting the IOGEAR 2-Port VGA USB Cable KVM with Audio and Mic, GCS72U, which uses separate USB cables for the keyboard and mouse and comes with its own switch. It works flawlessly. 2Very Nice Switch This product does work well. I read some of the reviews on here about it breaking too fast, I suspect this is because of user error in most cases or not completely understanding computer OSes. Windows will lose sync with USB devices after a while, same with MAC OS and Linux - yes that sucks but there is a remedy... one that can be frustrating due to having to shut down both computers and unplugging both KVM USB plugs from each computer, then plugging them back in and restarting the systems. This has happened once to me and they are brand new, a simple re-connection and I am back in business. So far so good. Understanding what a low priced KVM will and will not do is key to using it successfully. One thing to keep in mind is that this device is not used to switch devices like USB flash or hard drives or other NON-HID devices. It is really made for HID (Human Interface Devices - Google it). If used for this purpose it should last you a long time. I am very happy with this low cost solution to running two computers sharing a monitor. 5Works Well - Keep Reading to Learn How I Use a Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Works well out of the box and does not require a power source. The description on Amazon says "Please Note: We do not recommend using this product with a wireless keyboard or wireless mouse. Kindly refer the User Guide before use".I first tried to use one Logitech Unifying nano receiver for both the keyboard and trackball. That did not work (the description is correct). There are two USB slots on the device, one for the keyboard and one for the mouse (look for the small icon-like etches on the device to know which is the one for the keyboard and the one for the mouse.) However, when I inserted two nano receivers and paired the keyboard to the one in the appropriate USB slot and the other paired to the trackball, that worked for both a Windows 7 and Windows 10 machine. When I switch between two computers, each one has a delay of a few seconds before the desktop is displayed, and therefore, the computer cannot be accessed during those few seconds. I don't consider that a problem, just a note to new users to not be alarmed when your computer does not respond instantly. If I could give the documentation a rating, I'd give it one star for not suggesting the above (anyone at TRENDnet reading?) 5A broken pile of garbage. I hate, hate hate hate this thing. It doesn't come with cables, so you're out another 80 bucks right away buying the TRENDnet cables. Now, after plopping down $200, I can't get the keyboard to work. The KVM forever shows a blinking green light; pressing any key on the keyboard resets the switch to console 1, but even then I can't get keys passed through to the connected PC. There is absolutely NO useful documentation or support available from TRENDnet. After wasting 5 hours troubleshooting, I'm taking this thing out back, Office Space style. Do yourself a favor, get one of the models that costs half as much, includes all the cables, and actually WORKS. 1The TK-803R v1 of this unit is horrible This KVM is basically unusable and unreliable.I was so excited to finally be able to have a nice KVM solution for my server rack. After an easy install, easy hookup I thought it was going to be a breeze! After running 3 days, the system locked up.This wouldn't have been such a problem if it had a front panel power switch...as it turns out, you must unhook ALL cables that provide any power (including the power adapter of course AND ALL USB/Monitor cables going to the back) to kill the power.Being a server rack, sandwiched between two full length servers made this process cumbersome at best and a friggin nightmare at worst when there was a problem with a server and I needed keyboard control ASAP.Do not buy this unit no matter how awesome the price looks. There is a reason. 1It works (TRENDnet 2-port KVM Switch, no audio cables) I ordered another brand switch box from Amazon and it didn't work. It seemed to have the same connection cables, but the cables going to the two computers were separate and only the USB cable was supplied. You provided the video cables. This one has the video and the usb together in one cable. Also, the other brand only had one button to switch from computer 1 and 2 while this one has a button for each computer. Other than these differences, both brands seem to connect in the very same way. Both brands seemed to be of good quality, but this one works. Quality makes no difference, if the device doesn't work. I'm sending the other brand back, and very happy with the TRENDnet unit. I purchased the 2-port version, without the the audio cables, so can't say if those would have worked. But, I don't know why they wouldn't.I liked that everything I needed was supplied with this unit. The other brand cost about the same, but it didn't supply all of the necessary cables. Maybe there was something wrong with one of my video cables, but they were taken from working computers. Anyway, to me, it just makes more sense to have all of the necessary cabling come with the unit. This is a very small footprint unit, too. I think I'm going to have to secure the box with a Zip tie, some Velcro or something, to keep it stationary. But, that is also a plus as it will stay out of the way and the only time I need to touch it is when I switch computer views. I'm happy with this purchase. 5Keeps changing ports I'm running this KVM on a combination of 3 computers - 1 Windows 7 x64, one Windows 10 Pro x64, and a Linux 64 bit desktop. Every time I used the port on Windows 10 the KVM will switch away from it randomly/automatically. It could be 2 seconds after I manually press the selector on the KVM, it could be 2 hours. This doesn't happen when I select the Windows 7 or Linux box. It almost always happens on a mouse-click. I've gone through 3 sets of keyboards and mice and it doesn't fix it. I borrowed my brother's Win10 PC, connected it and it does the same thing. I've read sporadic comments about Windows 10 causing this issue. I already had the KVM RMA'd once. I'm going to give up and purchase a different model and hope for the best. Otherwise it works great. 3It's okay, but it's not great either, only buy if the KVM is very low priority or you know you won't care. The switch works as expected, the 'USB' output to any of the computers are mouse/keyboard only.Is this switch any good? It depends on what your usecases are, but for 8 inputs, it might seem a little underwhelming when you can get something used on ebay for a couple hundred more that is much, much more capable. Get this if you want something cheap, but if you plan on integrating it alongside say, an Avocent-Dell KMM or want something that is a tad better, save up for something used on ebay, where the value proposition is much better, especially if you are using it with a rack with 8 computers on it.* I did have issues integrating a keyboard and some mice, so hardware compatibility seems to be an issue, but this is a glaring fault on most KVM equipment, one of the reasons why it is important to buy used on ebay for a fraction of MSRP then depend on a cheap solution that has 'okay' support for various peripherals. 3
