Customer Reviews

My reasoning behind this is either you love it or hate it When reading my reviews I will either give it 5 stars or 1 star. My reasoning behind this is either you love it or hate it.I have had this product for a few months and I really like this product. I tried out this product in hopes it would be as good if not better as many popular brands like netgear and linksys. I have to save the quality of the unit is really well built. Its got a full metal case and LED's that indicate if you are on 1Gig or 100 base networks It never seems to run hot even under lots of load. I have used 12 ports out of the 16 and it does what it says to shut ports down when not in use.I like that the power converter is built into the unit vs having a huge block to plug into a surge protector as I find it annoying when manufacturers give you this huge power converter as it blocks so many outlets on a power bar. Netgear tends to do this and thats why I was looking for alternatives. The one thing I would have to have improved on the product is to have the ability to wall mount the switch. Other than that I think this was a great purchase. 5Excellent unmanaged switch. No rack ears though. After upgrading our broadband router to a model featuring 4 gigabit LAN ports, we decided to upgrade the rest of the network to get the performance benefits of gigabit wired ethernet.I have an extensive wired network throughout the house, but with the 4 ports on the switch, and 16 ports here, minus 2 for connecting them, that leaves me with 18 available gigabit ports. The switch has 32 GBPS bandwidth across its bus, so no problems squeezing data through the switch itself, the link, and status lights give you a myriad of diagnostic information, and the legend on the front panel clearly explains the meaning of that diagnostic information from the lights... Versatile mounting options include desktop, rack, and with a little creativity to a mount board.Unlike my old Netgear 10/100 ethernet switch, with a terribly noisy fan, this thing is nearly silent in operation (On or off I can't hear it, and my sound meter app can't detect anything...).The Green Net technology is a huge bonus to even if you only hug trees to figure out how many board feet are in them. You see nobody likes spending too much money on energy, and the ability for this to automatically power the ports off seems like it would help. Time will tell how reliable that is though. The only real problem I have with this switch, and several other folks have mentioned it as well, is the lack of the rack mounting tabs / ears / brackets whatever you want to call them. They really ought to be included. But for a top quality switch at the price of this unit. The lack of the brackets can be easily overlooked...One thing that DOES need to be mentioned. This is an unmanaged switch. I have seen reviews here and there complaining about the lack of configuration options in unmanaged switches. That is kind of the def9inition of unmanaged after all isn't it? If you need to hard set your speed negotiation / packet sizes etc... do so with your NIC driver / module, or bump up to a layer2 manged switch (at about 3x the cost of an un managed model...) 5Had some problem connection I am using this switch three different network places since 2016. They are mostly okay however all switches have a same problem. Sometimes one or two of ports had failed connection. when it happens I have to change to the other remains port then it connected again. I have no idea how, and why it happened fail connection and later back to normal with only one or two port out of 16. I checked Ethernet cables, other devices, etc and all have no problems. After I replaced 2 of switch with other brand it doesn't happen again. I will replace one last one soon, too. 3Great switch - good speed and easy to use I can be cheap at times and I was using several small switches daisy chained together. They were maybe 7 - 8 years old and a bit slow, and I had rapidly outgrown them. After about a week of research I settled on the TRENDnet 16 port switch. One of the deciding factors was the speed (pretty obvious, I guess), while another was the green energy saver feature. But an additional factor was the ability to mount this in a rack. I had to buy mounting brackets but that was not a big deal to me. I bought a medium sized server rack and several shelves and I have mounted this switch along the bottom and then put my networks storage drives in the rack as well. So far so good - my network speed has improved and there doesn't seem to be as much buffering and "traffic jams" when there are 6 or 7 users on the network (hard wired, not wireless). Good switch for a very reasonable price. 5depressing sunday morning stopped working properly a little after 2 years. for 80some bucks not worth it. power still works and appears to work from lights but doesn't do any switching, no devices communicate on it. all ports bad, reset power lets it work for a minute then all devices can't communicate again. had to use 2 wireless router ports to get network back up and running for time being. giant paperweight atm, worked good until it didn't. didn't move device and wasn't rough on it, might just go with smaller device as they are cheaper and last way longer. 1This TRENDnet functioned perfectly out of the box! This TRENDnet functioned perfectly out of the box with zero need for set up! I purchased this unit to replace a brand new 16 port model of a different brand - TP-Link - which I had purchased and just installed a day ago (from a local store). The other model did not allow my two TIVO boxes to talk to each other like I was used to be able to do with an even earlier cobbled together mess of two smaller routers and switches. Another plus is that I placed the order at 10pm last evening and it was on my doorstep within 12 hours! Yea AMAZON! 5Failed twice-horrible customer service The unit died during the warranty period and it took three phone calls to have them agree to ship a replacement, but only after I spent $12 to ship them the dead unit. No credit for shipping and no replacement unit for over a week. When I plugged in the replacement unit, I found it, too, was dead. Thinking this was a bad joke and that they had simply returned my dead original, I checked the serial number which was different. They packed a dead unit received from someone else and shipped it to me.Customer service is poor and phone communication is very difficult. It might be a language issue for me. I just can't understand the speech or syntax of the customer service and technical support staff.I am buying from a namebrand, better quality manufacturer this time. 1Sturdy, Improved LAN connection. Easy set up, up and running in 5 minutes. Connect wireless router port to router. Or connect modem wire to router, add power to router, things work instantly.(This replaced a linkssys router that virtually fell apart due to cheap plastic enclosure and flimsy connectors. We moved and when I unpacked, it came out in pieces. Trashed.) personal experience suggests higher end, sturdy routers make a difference in LAN efficiency. Some parts are plastic that can't be avoided, but if an enclosure is metal accidental damage is more protective.Best feature is the enclosure is metal not plastic. It has a solid feel, thinner than old one and much more efficient. We have a large house and 12 LAN connections, including TV, printers And scanner. It's a better unit than plastic junk sold as routers. Not all connections are in use at once, though it's nice to connect when I change rooms and not fuss with wireless signal strength or configuration scripts. Finally I do have a wireless router and for mobile devices, however desk top and laptops are wired connections with VPN and IP hide programs, open VPN. Wireless is okay for IPhone, IPad, Android, etc. but heavy lifting on my network is wired. Banking, encrypted email, etc.I didn't test before and after connections wireless or network connections, now it appears faster and more efficient.Recommend this for large networks unless software management requires more attention than unmanaged. 5Fast speed, durable metal container I have owned an 8 port TrendNET switch for years and have never had any issues. That is the reason I purchased this switch. I had a need to upgrade from my old 10/100 mbps16 port switch due to upgrading my internet speed. The old switch was keeping my internet speeds under 100 mbps.I'm very impressed with the slim design and metal case of the 16 port TrendNET switch. Set-up was extremely easy, just pulled out the old switch and plopped in the new one, all within 5 minuets. The network recognized the new switch immediately. I'm now getting speeds of about 175 mbps on my main Ethernet connected computer, which confirmed that my old switch was choking out my network speed. 5This is a great 16 port switch This is a great 16 port switch. I want to clear up a couple of the questions I have seen people ask about this switch and hope it will answer yours 1 - If you look up TEG-S16DG on TRENDnet's website you will see 'The TEG-S16Dg (Version v1.0R) has been discontinued.' However I can confirm that this switch is the version 2 (at least as of June 4, 2018) is still in production and is what you will receive. See attached photo 2 - The TEG-S16DG is intended to be set on a desktop, so there are NO mounting holes on the bottom. However, there are holes on either side of the unit to attach the "TRENDNet Rack Mount Kit, Compatible with TEG-S16Dg/TEG-S24Dg, Mount an 11" wide to a 19" Equipment rack, ETH-11MK" wide to a 19" Equipment rack, ETH-11MK". So not exactly the best 'wall mount' option, I'm sure with a little ingenuity one could figure out a way to mount this to a wall (to make it look nice)Pictures attached are from the TEG-S16DG which I purchased on May 26, 2018, which shows the mounting holes/location and the backing plate that shows the full version number of the unit. I hope you find this information useful. 5
