Customer Reviews

Incompatibility with "Windows7 Backup": I/O error 0x8078002A I own more than 6 Transcend StoreJet HDDs. Generally they work very well. But . . .For the Transcend StoreJet HDDs larger than 2.5TB, there is an incompatibility with "Windows7 Backup".Attempting to run "Windows7 Backup", always gets I/O error 0x8078002A after about 20 minutes of processing on 3TB and 4TB StoreJets.I tried to phone Transcend at 714-921-2000, but they never answer the phone. They do answer emails, but their suggestions do not comprehend the problem nor fix the problem. So, as long as you don t try to run Windows 7 Backup, the HDD works nicely. 3Mac Users Beware For some reason, this Transcend drive did not want to cooperate with my Mac. No matter what I tried, I couldn't get the Mac to accept it for use as a Time Machine backup, so I just ended up treating it as a giant USB drive and dragging and dropping all my files onto it. Not exactly what I wanted to use a 1TB drive for.I do not know what the issue was. I've got a 2016 Macbook Pro 13", correctly formatted the drive for Mac, and the Mac explicitly reported that I could not use it for Time Machine.I guess I'll need to buy another Toshiba for that. Now I'm beginning to wonder about my previous Transcend drive. I have another one that I bought for use as a Time Machine backup, and it worked fine for a long time, then quit. I don't mean that the drive quit -- Mac will no longer read it as a Time Machine backup. I thought maybe that was because I had added other files to it, but now I wonder if this isn't an across-the-board issue with Macs and Transcend drives.I wouldn't advise Mac users to buy this brand. Toshiba is about the only brand left I trust. Seagate and WD both screwed me over royally, and the Porsche drive crapped out almost instantly. 3Very difficult to use, incredibly slow This is the worst backup drive I've ever seen. It is *very* difficult to figure out how to use; it is hands-down the most user-UNfriendly and least intuitive device I've ever owned. It also takes 3-5 times longer to complete the backup than any other drives I've used. I had to leave it over night to get a complete backup because it just took so many hours. By comparison, my older Toshiba drive can back up my entire system in about 2 hours.I would never recommend this product to anyone. 1Fast drive, works with Linux out of the box Last week I received, and fell in love with, the Transcend 1 TB USB 3.0 External Hard Drive - Military Drop Standards (TS1TSJ25M3). So I decided to order another Transcend drive that I can alternate with the first for backing up files, and I ordered this drive. It arrived today, and I'm as pleased with it as I am with the other one.As always for me, it's important that a product not only work with Linux but work WELL with Linux. This drive does, straight out of the box. (Note: I did format it as ext3 using gParted before using it because its original FAT32 file system would lose case sensitivity on file names, and that's not acceptable for this 30-year UNIX/Linux person. Aside from that, it works out of the box.)As I noted in my review for the other drive, there is some software included on it, but it's only for Mac and windows. However, that's not an issue for me as I wouldn't use it anyway; I like managing my backups myself. If you're a Linux user and you're going to reformat the drive, you might want to follow its warranty web page first. I really like how easy Transcend has made it to register your products, activate their warranties, and see visual proof on their web site regarding your warranties' start and end dates. Nice. This is a great product for its price. 5Useless.Returned. Had high hopes after reading several positive reviews - but this is rubbish, doesn't work anywhere close to expectations, and sent back.Transcend's own software has issues recognizing the device. After 10 attempts to simply back up files I gave up because each time I got a "failed backup" error about 1/3 of the way through. Tried different files and folders but failed backup every time. Waste of a few hours with no success. instructions, website and documentation sub-par. A simple data backup device in the year 2017 should not be like reinventing the wheel. Maybe the device is sturdy as it claims, but if it is a $100 hockey puck or brick, who cares. Two thumbs down. I know quality on hard drives has declined significantlythe past few years because cheap productionn is top of the list for manufacturers, but the time wasted is more frustrating than the poor quality being sold we're expected to use and trust with our valuable data. 1The Company Transcend Made Good on this Product! This is my original review. However I pursued the bad Transcend hard drive with Transcend and their service was fantastic. They were able to get all of my information off the hard drive and put it on a brand new Transcend hard drive and sent it to me at no cost. I am very happy! (Original review-The Transcend Military Drop Tested 2 TB USB 3.0 H3 External Hard Drive (TS2TSJ25H3B) worked great for about 6 months and then it stopped working. None of my laptops or computers recognized it any longer. I've tried working with the manufacturer, however once they found out that I have a lot of documents and photos trapped on it, their interest disappeared. I cannot recommend this product at all.) 5Tech Support Never Responded! although Product is Very Good so far. I bought this drive last May to keep a Backup of my hard drive. The primary reason I purchased it was because it was shock-proof and wanted to keep my data safe.PROS:1. It has a nice "heavy duty" construction without being bulky2. It also has a nice grip and feel because of the rubber material on outside which also won't let it slide easily on the table surface preventing it from falling.3. Very quiet4. Very fast connection using USB 3.0.CONS:1. It ships formatted with the very old FAT32 file system as opposed to most recent (and not so recent) Windows Laptop/PC Hard Drives and external Hard Drives that have been using NTFS since Win 2000 and XP. You will likely want to reformat as NTFS (review FAT32 vs. NTFS file systems).2. Extremely Disappointed with its Technical Support.I Inquired on June 3rd about how long would it take to reformat my Storejet 1TB external drive. I used the preinstalled Transcend software that came in the StoreJet to reformat it as NTFS. I started reformating on an afternoon and when I came back from work the next day at night it was still running, about 30Hrs!!! I cancelled the process and contacted TechSupport on their website, provided all the required info: S/N, purchase date, problem description..... I received email confirmation a few minutes later stating "Our support representative will contact you promptly...."It has been 2 weeks! and I still haven't heard from Transcend's Tech-Support. I hope the quality of the product is such that I won't have to contact their support again.Transcend formatting software is not reliable. I would not recommend you use it. Instead use the formatting option from Windows found in the "Disk Management" tool, which will format as NTFS your 1TB StoreJet in about 3hrs 35min (My system: Win 7, Intel i7 processor and using a USB 3.0 connection with the StoreJet). 2Nice durable drive This is my second one, as a mac owner the first thing to do is reformat. Shows up in NTFS and without the proper driver the mac can only read. Easy enough to open disc utility and change to MS-DOS (FAT) aka Fat32 or ExFat for files over 4 GB such as programs that are memory hogs. Plenty of space to back up your computer and bring a few thousand hours of TV shows, Movies, Audio files everywhere. Also to back up the ol' digital camera! Having had the previous one for almost a year, it has survived drops, splashes and vibration without a hitch. Can't beat the price or the standard MicroUSB 3 cable that comes with. 5I now own 6 of these and they're the best! I started buying these drives a few years back. Started with a 1 terabyte, I have several 2 Ts and now just purchased a 4 terabyte. I do a lot of video work, so video files and projects are enormous. I've literally hauled these drives around the world in my bags. They are sturdy, durable and I have never ever had an issue with any of them. They've never crashed. They've always performed. This is the only brand of external hard drive I purchase. 5Drive lasted just long enough to be ineligible for return. I bought this on October 10. Today, January 23, 2018 the drive failed. Windows Diagnostic confirms it is a failure in the drive, with a message recommending I back up my files. Support on this drive ended last month. Yay.
