Customer Reviews

No more ASUS AiMesh Feature. For the people who are converting this router from T-Mobile TM-AC68U to RT-AC68U or RT-AC68P (you can), hold off on your purchase. ASUS has implemented a protection feature with their latest firmware preventing T-Mobile router users from using their new AiMesh feature and some other features. At the time of this review with the new firmware release 3.0.0.4.384_20624-g14d2f02 (it was released two days ago) there is no more AiMesh. It's being discussed on forums and it looks like it's going to be a cat and mouse game for this router owners. Apparently ASUS doesn't want people using this router as their AC68U and will keep on tracking this issue.3Save yourself the money and get this and put Merlin on it.Got one for my sister and flashed it to Merlin and got one for myself seeing how easy it is. Yes this is same hardware as the RT-AC68U (Depending on version of AC68U you get, newer versions are 1ghz not 800mhz.) I don't remember how long it took to do it the first time but took and hour or less the second time. I followed bayareatechpros guide to convert it over to asus firmware and then merlin. My brother n law now can stream music in his whole yard while on his riding mower. Old router he had issues out in the driveway or garage. Get this take your time to flash it. I did it while watching TV both times. I'd do a few steps breath and watch TV and go on to the next steps. Yes I was worried about bricking it. So far so good. If anything changes I will update my review. Got both of them from Number 1 Distributors. No sign of it being used. Everything had plastic film on it. Box was not tapped but all looked new to me.5device was used and had non asus/tmobile antenna and power packI bought 2 units advertised new and both were used with wireless settings already configured along with non stock Tmobile wifi names . The power supply and antenna were not asus branded and clearly aftermarket. These were not new and I returned both.1One StarThis is not a new product. There are many sick dead cockroaches inside. So I asked for a refund.1Not new as advertisedThis unit was supposed to be new. It doesn t come in it s original box, instead it came in a white box with no labels. Then I set up the router only to realize that there is already a network name that was previously set up called PartyCrew2.4G and PartyCrew5G. There is no way this is a new unit with what I just mentioned about the box and preexisiting network.1Arrived USED, still a good router if you need to use aUSB modem (hotspot)As others have stated, my router arrived USED. Was missing items, all packaging was opened, and the router was already set up and password protected. After dusting it off and a full reset to remove the passwords locking me out of the router I was able to quickly set up the router using an LTE modem connected to the USB. Speed and Range is on par with the AirPort Extreme it replaced and I was able to ditch my crappy cable internet and use my wireless carriers unlimited data plan with a real router that covers the entire house and allows all 20 or so devices to connect reliably. The built in TimeMachine support (I have a Hard Drive connected to the other USB port) does not work with the current firmware version and T-Mobile does not seem to be worried about updating it but a quick Google search on the internet will show you how to flash the Asus firmware.3Misleading Advertising : Clearly a return or RefurbVery upset with this purchase. At the moment, having had it only 1 day, it appears that it will be functionally OK (hopefully)HOWEVER: It is abundantly clear that this was a return/open box/refurb. NOT new as advertised.Upon power up the router displayed non-standard SSIDs and did not respond to the standard login credentials. The unit had to be reset to defaults manually, by me, not them.I DO NOT appreciate being charged new product price for a used/returned product...... they didn't even bother to reset the configuration to factory default, just throw it in a box and back out the door... disgraceful.1Can become an Asus RT-AC68U with a firmware flash. T-Mobile used to give these out for a $25 deposit - but they stopped doing that. I bought one from Amazon, used instructions on the internet, and flashed it to the Asus firmware. That now makes it an ASUS RT-AC68U, a $150+ router, more than most people need. It covers most of my 4000 sq ft house. The flashing of firmware is a bit tricky. The instructions have to be followed exactly, then it's not too hard. 4... flawlessly and I am getting the expected throughput and better coverage than my previous wireless N router So far the router has worked flawlessly and I am getting the expected throughput and better coverage than my previous wireless N router. Comcast recently upgraded my Internet speed to 200 Mbps and my current Asus RT N66U was maxing out at delivering about 100 Mbps. It was killing me that I had speed that I couldn t use (at least over Wi-Fi) but I didn t care so much that I would sink more than $100 into an upgrade for an otherwise functioning router. I chose the TM AC-1900 because, as others have said, it s essentially identical to the Asus RT-AC68U (except for a few minor differences that frankly weren t important to me) at a fraction of the price.I can have up to 35 devices connected to my home network at a time. This router handles the traffic perfectly with no dropped connections and utilizing the full speed of my connection (of course depending on network traffic and the capabilities of the connected device).I will add that the router I received was clearly not new. All the seals on the box were open, as were the accessory bags, and the box looked a little beaten up, though all parts were present and nothing looked worn. I can t say whether it s used, refurbished, or merely open-box, but it works and looks fine, so I don t really care, given what I m getting for the price. I do, however, agree that this should be noted in the product description (-1 star).I d also like to offer a tip for those taking advantage of a new router to increase their Wi-Fi security. Like many people, each time I have upgraded my router over the years I simply kept the SSID and password the same to facilitate an easy transition. However, as time went on, I realized that the password I chose 8 years ago was not nearly as long and random as it should be. So, when setting up this new router I created all new network credentials, but I also set up one of the guest networks with my old credentials and gave it full network access (not internet connection only ). This made sure everyone / everything remained connected and I could take my time distributing the new info to my family and changing the credentials on all my smart home devices, printers, media players, etc. I then simply turned off the guest network when everyone had switched over. 4whats not to love. This router internally is the exact same hardware ...A $155 router for only $82, whats not to love. This router internally is the exact same hardware as the AC68U.This router will work perfectly well for the average user regardless if they use the t-mobile wifi calling or not.I have seen many people drop big money on routers to find out they paid an extra $100 for feauters they cant use. If you dont have 10+ devices on 5ghz then tri-band is irrelevenat, and most wifi chips in laptops and phones dont have MU-MIMO and have at best 866mbps speed chps. These AC1900 routers of ASUS have great range, dual core cpu, a better UI then many other firmwares and can handle a lot of devices (I have over 30 wired and wireless devices on my home router). The stock t-mobile firmware is a little restrictive vs the stock ASUS and does not upgrade as often. For the normal user this will in no way be an issue. For advanced users with higher needs there is ways to flash it to the AC68U firmeware, but word of warning it involves a lot more then just upgrading through the web gui utility.5Paid a premium for new, was clearly used, not even refurbished.Purchased two of these and paid a premium for "New" however I received units that were clearly used and not even refurbished. The boxes were marked as "New" which was funny. One unit needed a factory reset to be able to log in, both had changed SSIDs. Like most buyers, I was upgrading the firmware and found one unit had a non standard CFE loaded on it.I would have returned them but needed to get the network up and running and didn't have time to return.I hate leaving reviews based on a product misrepresentation, but there is no other avenue to make folks aware that they most likely will get a used, not even refurbished, product that is marked as new.2So many options!! I have this hooked up sharing Internet from a zte mobley device. Overall this product works well. I do experience times where my phone or other devices won't connect. Authentication fail. Not sure what the problem is, this may only last 10 minutes or an hour and then will work fine after that. If it didn't have that problem I would give it 5 stars. For me I would say positives would be that it was easy to set up and there is lots of info on the Web that can show you how to set it up for your situation. This device also has lots of options with being able to share your phones Internet with multiple wifi devices. If you have wifi hotspot service on your phone. It's all just plug and play style. Really nice. Cons for me are the random authentication fail when it tries to log into the router. Most of the time it works but there are times it don't. 4This device is not comming with original power adaptor...I bought 2 routers in December of last year, one of them I sold it and the other one I kept it, however the one that I stayed opened it recently and discovered that it does not work correctlyI connected it and I can access the configuration, but the Wi-Fi signals (2.4 and 5.0) do not have enough power, I need to be 2 or 3 centimeters for my cell to detect the signals, when I checked, I discovered that the power adapter it comes is generic, it is not the original of ASUS. This is very serious because the seller did not notice that, despite coming in its original packaging, the power adapter is not original and perhaps this is the reason why it does not work properly, I do not know how to contact the seller, amazon says that They can no longer make the guarantee valid. I am very disappointed in this purchase ... money spent on something that does not work1
