Customer Reviews

Really? A little cheap plastic tab in the center of the feeder stops the paper from going down! Used maybe 6 times since purchase date (Nov 2017) and already having issues. I only put - at most - 4 sheets of paper through at a time. This thing was treated well and not over-worked, so this is very disappointing. It over-heated once and I had to let is sit for about 30 minutes until it worked again. Now, I put a few sheets through and then wait a bit before doing more, which is ridiculous if you ask me.There is a sensor tab in the middle of the feeder part that is supposed to sense when paper is there, but this tab got stuck on mine and would not take the paper. You can only feed narrow strips of paper through the sides, but nothing in the center because this tab is blocking it.The motor is not jammed and working fine.2 Stars instead of 1 - only because I was throwing it out, and my husband stuck a knife down there and somehow popped the tab back into place, and it is currently working again. However, I am not feeling good about this and I presume this issue will continue to happen until that little cheap tab breaks off, and then we'll be done for good. Since we did not do anything to cause this, I am not a fan so far! 2I am changing my review. I purchased this again and the second one just did not hold up like the first one. Edited: This used to be a better, more reliable machine. I think they changed something. The last one I bought started off strong but didn't last like the first one.I shred a lot! So when my one year old Fellowes Powershred W11C ($70.64) failed in only 1 year I decided to try another brand. I went with the AmazonBasics 12 sheet Crosscut ($49.99). BIG MISTAKE! I could see right away that one did not have the horsepower to shred anywhere near 12 sheets of paper at once. And when it jammed up, it locked up so tight I couldn't reverse the jam. So after only 3 months it completely locked up and I couldn't get the jam out so I sent it back. Kudos to Amazon for the full refund but I was back at square 1. I ran across this "junk mail" shredder with only 1 5-star review at the time so for $62.88 I thought I would give it shot. I am so happy that I did! It powers through my junk mail without me having to open it and feed it through 2 pieces at a time. And it handles my single, double and triple sheets like nobody's business. I am not sure if the reverse feature works because I haven't had to use it yet. The shredded paper is not confetti-small but they are approximately .2 x 1.2 inches so I can't imagine anyone trying to obtain info from tiny strips of paper that size. I guess if I was shredding top-secret documents I might want smaller, confetti-sized pieces but for my home/office it is perfect. Oh yeah...it's a little noisy but that's because it's so powerful and I can live with that! Awesome shredder for the price. 3Great replacemt for my fellowes w11c I received this today and I'm completely satisfied so far. My fellowes w11c bit the dust and this is its replacement. It is what I've used for the past few years and they seem like direct competitors so I'll use it as base expectations. The bad:This is crosscut not micro shreds. This has a smaller bin so emptying more often. I mostly shred bills, credit card offers, etc. if I were doing lots of daily shredding, I wouldn't be as happy as I am with this purchase.Paper shredders are noisy. Can't shred when people are sleeping.Wish it had a bin with a door. The cd catcher looks like it's designed for another model. It fits ok, but it just looks backward. The good:This is the best value I could locate anywhere for over 10 pages.12 page capacity is a must. My fellowes was about the same and this performs very similarly. They both bog down some when at max page count. It took years to finally strip the gears on the fellowes so I expect the same with this. Don't blame the manufacturer if you run 10 folded papers ind it breaks. - that is 10 x 2 = 20. Just don't try it. You can do 6 folded pages or 4 pages with envelope folds (the trip folds) in this. The cross shreds are plenty small for my use - understand my opinion is that micro shredding seems unnecessary. The only real value seems to be the waste basket compacts better so you empty less often. If you disagree this isn't for you. This unit is small enough to fit easily under my desk and be useable - it is about the max size I'd consider on my desk.Standard plastic grocery bags will line the bin perfectly. Even though the bin is smaller, this makes emptying about 5 times easier. Again, I shred maybe 15 to 20 envelopes of mail a week, not 500.When lined with grocery bag, the cd catcher fits easily under the bag on its side and out of the way. Or you can still put it in place with the bag if you shred lots of cds and cards. It has a window to see how full the bin is - although I can't tell easily since I'm lining with grocery bags.Even though I've read it is vacuum cleaner loud, I think it is closer to my dishwasher. It's almost half as noisy as my fellowes shredder - much appreciated. The molded handle on top makes emptying so much easier. It's easier to empty than a handle that flips up and likely less easy to break. I'll never own another without the handle. It has a separate slot for cds and I assume it's for credit cards. I haven't used that yet - but since they are separate I feel better that my paper shredder will last longer.Unknown: reliability. I have no reason to doubt it, but I'll update as I use it more. 5We use it almost daily and it easily shreds unopened envelopes I bought this in March of last year, so I've used it for over a year. Can't think of a single complaint. We use it almost daily and it easily shreds unopened envelopes, including pieces with plastic windows and even credit cards inside. I've pushed the limit a time or two--with 15 or so pages--and simply turned the motor switch to reverse and it was fixed withing seconds. I'm sure there are more powerful or quieter shredders, but for your average user, this has been perfect and it's a good deal. 5card stock like two birthday cards just about stall the motor The motor lugs and overheats when shredding only 4-6 sheets of standard printer paper not 12, card stock like two birthday cards just about stall the motor. I tried 12 sheets of cheap printer paper and it could not shred it at all without stalling and overheating. The photo of papers randomly stuffed every which way is misleading as well, the papers have to be fed very carefully or else the motor lugs and could stall. Overall this shredder would be well served with a much more powerful motor, just a few sheets in and you smell a hot motor smell and soon thereafter the motor stops due to overheating. It also does not clear itself very well, there are always wads of paper hanging from the underside that fall everywhere when you remove the power head to empty the bin. I checked the voltage to the shredder and found it to be 118V so no excuses. 2Acceptable light-duty shredder Purchased this as a replacement for an old Fellowes shredder (model PS60C-2) which gave up the ghost after more than 10 years of usage --- relatively light usage to be sure, but still enough to give a full container of shreds once a week on the average. I've only been using this shredder for several weeks now so can't comment upon its longevity, but I've already seen enough (especially in comparison to my previous shredder) for a couple of comments.First, the container capacity (which is listed as 5 gallons) is noticeably smaller than the container on the Fellowes (which was listed as 6.5 gallon). I prefer the larger container simply because one doesn't have to empty it as often.I like that the shredding head has a built-in handle that helps lift off the head from the container. The Fellowes didn't have this built-in handle with the result that it was an annoyance to lift the heavy head off the container.I don't like how the shredded paper is compressed up into the cutting head if I haven't emptied the container when it gets to its capacity. If the paper shreds can't fall freely into the container, this shredder keeps shredding but the shreds get compressed up in the head. Eventually, the shredding action slows down and you become aware that it's time to empty the container, but by then, you have to deal with a mass of compressed shreds. Of course, if I were more diligent about emptying the container this would not be a problem.I haven't tried this shredder yet on CD's, but it has a special slot for them. I actually usually shred DVD's, which I use for back up of data due to their higher capacity. One can actually separate off a clear plastic layer from the DVD before shredding the DVD, and my old Fellowes was able to handle the stripped-off DVD's with no problem. I expect that this new shredder would be able to handle them as well. For any shredder, I definitely recommend getting some thin plastic trash can liners to use to line the container. This makes cleaning out the container without getting tiny bits of shredded paper all over much easier. 4Product did not last 6 months from occasional use Bought this product in December 2017 and by mid-June 2018, the shredder would no longer shred anything unless I place the the item (paper, card) at the corners of the shredder head. Will have to check the warranty for this shredder because I cannot imagine that an item such as this one has such a short lifespan. Also, I can no longer leave the shredder in auto mode; that mode stopped working. Instead, I had to turn off the shredder to keep it from running excessively and turn it on whenever I needed to shred anything. Nothing that I did cleared the problem -- not even using shedder lubricant sheet, which also could not be placed across the head. This operation is not acceptable. Now, I'm left with the original purchase of this broken shredder. Because I needed a shredder right now to keep build up of paper down, I had to immediately buy a new shredder -- this time a different brand , and not taking a chance on the same brand of the original purchase. I'll just stick with Swingline staplers and staples to be on the safe side and not buy medium or heavy duty office equipment that definitely supposed to last more than six months. 1Great for small jobs like cleaning out a small file ... Great for small jobs like cleaning out a small file cabnet as the wife and I did. As advertised, if it gets too hot it will shut down on you and you will have to wait out the 20 to 30 minute recovery time before you can resume your shredding as my wife and I did.... twice! However, this is only a miner set back if you only use it lightly in your home office. I did appreciate the safety shut off on this unit when separated from the lower paper capture container. Sure, I would recommend this product it did what I needed it to do. 3Great shredder at any price I ordered 2 of these & I am glad I did.. at the price point I didn't expect much & was very surprised at the quality of the devices.Powerful machine, handles unopened junk mail , staples, credit cards & paper without a hitch. Just a little noisy but that's ok, it's a great product & does exactly what it claims. Probably 1 of the best shredders I've had & @ a great price.Better than many more expensive shredders. Delivery was fast & product well protected. I am happy with my purchase. 5Very good shredder with a minor easy repair. This shredder will definitely handle about anything you can throw at it. I had only one issue. The motor stopped suddenly but with a nasty little sound just before. After pulling apart the housing and inspecting all the gears, I found the problem. The drive gear had come loose from shipping. I simply removed the motor and gear, tightened up the screw, carefully reassembled the motor and housing. After many uses, there has not been any problems other than some of the oil vapors causing the switch to delay a bit. A very simple cleaning item. On a better note, this shredder is very hungry but the safety switches are a great plus. 4
