Customer Reviews

Works with Gear VR. Device is small. Recommend. Purchased to pair with Samsung Gear VR and a S7 phone (not edge). Paired easily. Required a couple of phone and device reboots to get it to be recognized by Gear VR applications. No issues since then. Every time I start the controller before I insert the phone into the headset, it is detected and works. Note: During your first connect, for troubleshooting purposes, you can push the "4" button (X button in PS3 language) at the Oculus intro health-warning screen. If the controller X (4) button advances the screen, your controller is recognized by the Gear VR. If not, start over.Controller is much smaller than I anticipated. It feels about like a narrow deck of cards in your hands. It is flat, similar weight, thickness, and length. I slip it into my t-shirt pocket when I don't need to use it. It felt very awkward in my hands the first time because of its size. But I got used to it quickly. I have normal hands. Someone with huge, meaty fingers would not be able to use this controller. It is pretty small, but fine for normal hands. It has performed flawlessly so far. I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it is quite expensive (I paid nearly $37.00 US for it) and it is very small. I have not experienced any charge or battery life issues. Charge time is not long (hour or so) and life is several days of casual use.If you are looking for a controller for your S7 and your Gear VR Headset this one works well. I use it and recommend it from personal purchase.I am consumer and am not affiliated with this company, Amazon, or otherwise. I'm just a guy who bought this item for personal use and wrote a review to be helpful.SteelSeries Free Mobile Wireless Gaming Controller with Bluetooth for Samsung Gear VR, Smart Phones, Tablets, PC 4Updated review on this product Right now, I'm giving this 4 star, because it's small enough for me to like this item. I will try on Android and give further feedback, maybe go up to 5 stars.Instructions for users using Windows 10, Pro. DO NOT install version 3 of the drivers as indicated by the website. As many have noted, they are useless and don't install. Use version 2 of the software that allows you to emulate keyboard and customize your controls. This has worked for me and so far, I like it.NOTE: For all games that use tablet controls only or touch screen controls only, THIS GAME CONTROLLER WILL NOT WORK.Pros: Small , versatile, good controls, Bluetooth wireless. Easy to travel with, works with VRCons: Extra small print on instructions, expensive as hell, useless website , drivers are a pain in the a$$. 4Nice gamepad, but the product description is a lie. Nice small gamepad. Feels nice and well constructed. Is Not completely compatible with all the games it claims to be. Just for example, in GTA III, there is no way to start automobile missions, nor cycle weapons. With SteelEngine App for Android, you can Not "Remap all 12 buttons via Steel Series Engine" as the product description claims. You can not remap any of the buttons At All. The ONLY thing the SteelEngine app does is show you an image of the gamepad, and highlight the buttons as you press them, and allow you to log/send an email to their alleged support, that's it. I connected this to my Nexus 10 in about 15 seconds, with no bluetooth issues before downloading and installing the steel engine app. It kinda works with all games, just not all on screen functions are acceptable on gamepad while using it. With the gamepad synced, the onscreen functions are not accessible. No customer support whatsoever, or at least no response to the email I sent them over a week, still waiting. Purchase at your own risk. This controller is way over priced. It may be worth 79.99 if you could do all that the manufacturer claimed you could, but you can not. The functions on this device that do work work well.I've synced this device to my wife's galaxy tab 2, same results. After realizing this gamepad was not intended for an android, I connected it via Buletooth, to my pc, no problem. (Just a side note for others, you'll need to unpair or turn off your tablet first). I installed the windows version of SteelEngine and was able to remap any button I chose. And this works, for the PC, but when I reconnect it to my tablet all buttons are back to the manufacturer's default. Reconnected to my PC and buttons are automatically remapped to my configuration. If the SteelEngine app is ever updated/fixed for the Android, this gamepad will be a must for gamers. 2This is a ripoff for $80; buy something else. It's probably important to mention that when I bought this in 2015, it was $25. Yeah... I'm not kidding. For $25, this was more than worth it. For $80, this is a total ripoff and you should avoid it at all costs. The only thing this has going for it is its excellent battery life and it's probably the most portable of all the bluetooth controllers. Knock on wood, I've never had any issues with this working with my phone (LG G3, latest firmware). It works just fine with the games I'm using it for and I've never had an issue with my phone recognizing it.The controller itself is actually pretty nice. Here are my gripes: it's way too small. I have tiny hands and even I think it's too small. The L and R buttons are a little too firm for my taste, wish they were softer (they're more "clicky" than "squishy"). The d-pad kind of sucks. It's fine for platforming games, but for games that require more precise movement it can be somewhat lacking. When you're holding down left or right on the d-pad, it's very sensitive to whether the pressure is applied on the upper or lower part of the left or right arrow, resulting in occasionally undesired lateral movement. You will adjust to this. There's also definitely a little bit of input delay but it's small and you will adjust. If they drop this to $35 or less, I'd say go for it. Anything above that simply isn't worth it and your money is better spent elsewhere. 3excellent little controller!! I've been using this with my nexus 7 and so far I'm impressed. The Bluetooth connects quickly and works as it should. Functions well with NES and SNES emulator game; usable with button mapping on N64 games. Build quality is decent, couldn't really expect more. I haven't noticed any lag yet. The d-pad is slightly touchy, sometimes "up" reacts when you hit "right" but may be because the controller is so small... I mean tiny, very compact and easy to transport. I was going to buy one of the retro controllers, but at $25 with joysticks... This was a bargain. 4Great controller!!! I don't know if I should give this a 4 or 5 star. Since I was able to get this for $30, I'll give it a 5 star. The quality of this controller exceeds my expectation. It's very well built. The directional buttons are a little stiff, hopefully it'll break in soon. The joysticks felt like the one on PlayStaion controller, which I like. I like the matte texture of the controller, It prevents smudges and fingerprints. Some people say it's a little small, I say it's perfect for me. But That's subjective. The only Con I could think of, if I had to find one, is that it doesn't have the second bumper buttons. But it would be almost impossible to put one on this controller this size. Other than that, it's perfect for what I use it for, which is emulators on my Nexus 6.I would highly recommend this controller for anyone looking to purchase one. Just know what you're gonna use it for. Don't expect every games on play store/Apple store to compatible with this. BUT I WOULD NOT BUY THIS FOR MORE THAN $30. If your pocket is a little deep , go purchase a Drone Evolution controller. It's $60 but I heard it's a really great controller. 5Awesome Android Game Pad What an amazingly well done gaming controller for Android devices! Works with tablets, phones, games with controller support work automatically, games without can have a keymap tool loaded (many still use it for nav and click/back buttons with no extras)Configuration is PlayStation style, thumbsticks are true analog controllers with full variable positioning and 360 degree rotation. D-Pad is solid, buttons are solid, and the Shoulder L/R buttons (2) are VERY solid and smoothly integrated into the body. Discrete MicroUSB charge port. Bluetooth auto connects properly on power up, and can act as a basic device controller (move around icons, click, etc)This gets 5 stars with two call-outs (heads up engineers) for improvement1) It needs an "off" button or feature (none I could find it times out after about 10min of inactivity)2) It needs someplace to hook it too a keychain/lanyard loop please, I already have 2 in the house and its the biggest request :) 5I've had this for a good while and it's been holding up better than controllers ... I've had this for a good while and it's been holding up better than controllers I've paid three times as much for. This is phenomenal, as most controllers I own sit prose in a desk drawer, while this one is constantly being thrown around or stashed in a pocket or backpack. The latency is extremely nice, as I've yet to notice a lag in button presses, no matter how intense the game. Battery life is also great, giving me a few days of strenuous gameplay without requiring a recharge in-between. 5Okay product, but not really worth what I paid for it. Should be priced under $20. Pro's:Analog sticks are better than I expected.Controller feels nice in the hand (despite small size).Carrying case is nice (has room for controller and my earbuds case). The battery holds a charge well. The controller emulates keyboard in Windows, right analog stick acts as a mouse (games that don t support controllers but use keyboard and mouse ONLY work pretty well).Con s:Installation in Windows 7 was not straight-forward at all (see notes below). The controller emulates keyboard in Windows (games that actually support a controller don t recognize this as a controller). No buttons can be mapped to scroll wheel up/down.Minor lag with button press.Notes:This controller is a little disappointing. I had some problems getting it installed... there are no drivers/software included in the box, instead the instructions point to http://steelseries.com/engine to download the software. So I downloaded the current version (Engine 3) and installed the software. After installation completed, when prompted to connect the device, I connected the included USB cable to begin charging while I finished setting it up. Windows 7 detected the device as an Unknown Generic Bluetooth device and failed to install a driver for it. The SteelSeries Engine 3 also did not recognize the device. I followed their FAQ's to troubleshoot and discovered that I had installed the wrong Engine version. I uninstalled Engine 3 and downloaded and installed the older version, Engine 2 (their support site has a broken picture for the Free Mobile Wireless Controller as of this writing). It still wasn't recognized with Engine 2 while connected via USB, so I opened a support ticket with SteelSeries Support. They confirmed that Engine 3 is not compatible with the Free Mobile Wireless Controller (not sure why?), but in order for Engine 2 to work, you have to pair it through Bluetooth (it is not recognized correctly as a USB device in Windows).I opened a second support ticket because I wanted to map the mouse scroll wheel up/down to buttons on the controller... their answer: it can't be done.I tried to use this controller first with Minecraft. It works fairly well, but you can't map anything to change items in your HUD, so you have to do that with the mouse wheel or keyboard 1-9 keys.I also tried some console emulation (NES, SNES) I found that the response time for button press can be rather laggy, (Mario dies more than usual ;-).Overall this product is probably better than its competition, but not really worth the >$30 price point. Would be a steal (pun intended) at around $15. 3Nice build but no support. If all you want to do is play emulators of classic systems (think SNES and back), this is just fine and has a healthy list of compatible emulator apps for such purposes. However, this did not really allow me to step into modern gaming like I hoped it would. The list of apps supported is short and full of silly temple run / racing type games. Shadowgun was fun, but what after that? After paying $80 a year ago, I was really hoping that SteelSeries was going to promote their device and work towards having it incorporated into more modern mobile gaming (think Gameloft titles - it just doesn't work well with these, if at all). They really advertised it as the next big thing and then just let it flop on the market with no ongoing support. Now its less than half the release price, and I doubt they're going to suddenly start supporting it.Additionally, the SteelSeries Free Engine app that they developed has never once done what it is advertised as doing. They say it will allow you to program the buttons and tune them to the game you are playing but this never was the case. Many people have balked at this fact, myself included, to no response at all from SteelSeries. Its simply a lie on their part. Add to that, if you can run a PSX or PS2 emulator, you're going to be short a couple trigger buttons & L3-R3. Now to add insult to the situation, SteelSeries Stratus is available with both sets of trigger buttons, like the familiar Sony design. What's it cost? $80. Is it Android or PC compatible? No. Any exciting new games for iOS users to enjoy? Not really. The only reason I gave this 3 stars instead of 1 is build quality. Its a solid device that really does feel comfortable even in my large hands. It pairs flawlessly, holds a long charge, and elevates the gaming experience on those very few games it works with. I guess I'll just keep playing the classics via emulator on my mobile devices... but the same roms are equally enjoyable on my PC with my $16 Logitech controller so.... Save your money? Its close but not quite. 3
