Customer Reviews

Does what it says, but color seems off. This product does what it says. I got it for work purposes so that I don't have to keep splitting the screen to compare documents side by side. I now am able to view 1 document on each screen and drag and drop any windows that I have open between the two screens. The only downside is that the monitor that I have running off this adapter has funky colors, depending what is on the screen. Anything that is light blue will show up as a bright aqua color. Also another thing I notice is there is a tiny delay on anything I am viewing/moving on this same monitor.Keep in mind I am using an older flat screen monitor, which could be the reason for the color change (I'll update my review once this monitor dies). Also the delay might be from the RAM or something. The desktop computer I use at work is a few years old.But I do love it and the ease of hooking it up. And I love that it does what it says. I would give 5 stars if not for the color problem and delay. 4use 2 monitors at once This may be just the thing for you if:1. You want to add a second monitor to your computer, but your computer does not have a second monitor port2. You do not have the ability (skill, permission, time, interest, etc.) to add a new or second video card3. You are using a Microsoft Windows-based PC (I tested this on a Mac running OS X 10.8.2)4. You want the second monitor to be able either to mirror or to extend* your existing desktopNote: at the current price of this device, you can buy a basic video card that has two ports.Note: you will have to install the included software, which is PC-only, for this device to work properly.FYI: I bought this for a colleague at work. The machine had a single DVI port, already in use. The office had several extra VGA monitors available. This device allowed us to plug in a VGA monitor into my colleague's computer's available USB port. Through the Control Panel, we extended* his desktop across the two monitors so that he can now see large Excel spreadsheets in their entirety. (*Extend means that the computer treats all monitors as a single monitor. You desktop then 'stretches' or extends across them. Your mouse will similarly glide from monitor to monitor as if it were single, continuous desktop space. This configuration works best when the monitors are physically side by side.)We noticed a slight color/temperature difference between the monitors. Some tweaking with the monitor menus and/or the Display preferences should allow us to match the screens, but so far no luck. However, my colleague is still quite happy.I strongly recommend this device if your situation meets the above criteria.I hope this helps. 4Dell Inspiron DUO now connects to projector This product does exactly what I wanted. I am writing a review so that others who are trying to add an external monitor capability to their netbook (specifically the Dell Inspiron DUO) can rest assured that this solution works. First try, right out of the box.My problem was that while my little flip-screen DUO does everything I want in a computer for travel, I sometimes need to bring my BIG laptop along if I want to connect to a projector. This is a big deal weight-wise and a hassle as well. I researched solutions and it appeared that a USB2-to-VGA external device would work, but I couldn't find any reviews making it clear that it would work for certain.I contacted StarTech.com's technical support and they got back to me very quickly. They advised buying the unit somewhere with a good return policy because they had seen some "issues" with touch screen devices. I was looking at a competing device and contacted their tech support with the same question and got a "we're sure it will work." I went with StarTech because I liked their response time AND their honesty. Turns out, it works just fine. One tip: Don't install from the enclosed CD at all. Just download the latest driver installation from the StarTech website. The only thing that happens if you install from the CD is that you have to then uninstall it to get the updated drivers installed. My mistake, but it would've been more clever to just tell me to get the drivers online and not bother with the CD. Anyway, a few minutes wasted time, but otherwise no big deal. After getting the drivers installed, I connected everything as directed in the brief manual. And it works! No fuss, no muss. Upon recognizing the device, it went immediately into dual monitor mode and mirrored everything from my screen to the projector. I'm good to go.By the way, it works just fine in touch screen mode as well. I didn't START the computer in tablet mode, but when I switched from keyboard to tablet mode, it had no problem paging through a PowerPoint slide presentation and showing that on the projector.UPDATE: Used it on a trip. I had to restart my laptop a couple of times as it "lost" the connection to the projector (or the projector lost it). But, after that, it ran like a charm for 2.5 hours without a glitch. EXCELLENT product. 5Great product for the price Great product for the price. I am using 5 of these with 5 older Win7 laptops (Dell Latitude D630) so I can run a projector from the VGA output and another VGA monitor from one of the USB ports. (Only using one adapter per laptop.) There is a very minor amount of "ghosting" of the image, but I'm not using it for high end graphics anyway, just to see a countdown timer on the VGA monitor. So, for the price, works great. I needed 5 for this project, so this saved me a lot of money. 5Great Technology I love this adapter. My on board video card has a VGA slot and a DVI-D slot. Unfortunately, I have two VGA monitors, one my Wacom Cintiq. I couldn't run it and my large monitor together, and the DVI-D to VGA adapter I bought was useless. I tried a second video card, and that just wouldn't work with my motherboard.Fortunately, tech support at the video card company mentioned USB to Video adapters. I was not familiar with these, but I thought it might work. I ordered this from Amazon, got it two days later, followed the instructions (download drivers from website, then hook up the adapter and monitor) and it worked like a charm. I'm very, very happy with this, and enjoying using my Cintiq again. 5It works, just not great It works, though not perfectly. Also the screen resolution could be a lot better. Anytime my computer goes to screen saver the third monitor changes back to a duplicate screen rather than extended screen. It does change back after leaving screen saver mode but it takes a couple seconds & I always have to move the windows I had on that monitor back over there. Also if you are switching between two workstations & one does not have a third monitor, it is important to always fully shut off the computer between. Otherwise the software seems to get really confused & usually causes me to have to re-install it. Interestingly enough having re installed it about three times now it actually works better now than on the first install. Originally it would revert back to very low resolution every time the screen saver came one & when it woke up I would have to go back into settings to change it back to high resolution. Now it keeps its resolution setting, I just have to move the windows back, which is still annoying but not quite as annoying.Overall, if you are looking for a cheap option for a third monitor, and you only use one workstation & don't mind moving your windows back to the right spot several times a day this will work for you. If not, try something else. 3Worked satisfactorily; resolution limited to 1680 x 1050 This adapter works satisfactorily and is easy to install. Be advised, however, that the resolution on this adapter is limited. The best that it can do is 1680 x 1050. My HP 25 inch monitor supports much higher resolution, so this adapter is limiting. Further, this adapter is somewhat slower than an on-board video card. For ordinary computer usage this does work satisfactorily. On the plus side of the ledger, installation was easy to accomplish. You do have to use the supplied installation CD; installation is not plug and play. Nonetheless, installation only took a couple of minutes and I accomplished it with no problems whatever. Bottom line: if 1680 x 1050 is the best resolution that you will need, this is a good adapter, and it only requires USB 2.0. RJB. 4Not suitable for real work This is all on me. I purchased an item without really considering all the performance issues that are involved in adding additional monitors. This would be fine if you had no other needs of a monitor but to turn on. This is clearly an "entry level" USB addition video card. It is totally unsuited for actual work. The refresh rate for the screen will take you back to the early 90s. Forget about working on anything in real time. Working on refreshing/updating Excel worksheets is frustrating at best. Again, this is ALL on me. I should have read specs and considered I wanted something to match at least the refresh rate of my laptop. My suggestion, save your money and get a USB device that can perform as you need it to perform. Read carefully the posted performance specs. I will need to do the same and find a much better solution to my third screen needs.I write this review to only advise on what you REALLY need to do the job you want. You can't go inexpensive if you want to get the job done. 2Great Product, Setup Instructions Need Help This product works just as advertised. Unfortunately it took some doing to get it there. The instructions are woefully lacking and confusing and did not match what I saw on screen. While I did get it installed the Office 2013 app windows exhibited strange behavior when moved to the monitor controlled by this device. Finally I had to call their technical support for help. The support person was great. Was patient and spoke clearly as he diagnosed the problem. The problem was a setting in Office 2013, in Word under: | File | Options | Advanced |. I had to check the box, disabling "Hardware graphics acceleration." Once that was done. this unit worked just fine. 4Great Product Simple & Easy Multi-Monitor Setup Don't want to open your computer up to add dual monitor support? Need the ability to add multi-monitor to different computers or quickly? This product is great, I use it as a quick work around users with only one monitor output that want multi-monitor setups. Simple, easy and I've never had an issue! Great for either that quick fix when you don't have time to pull a machine and install a display card, or even to hand to an end user and let them do it for you! As long as your not worried about frame rate this adapter is great. (I only mention frame rate if you're thinking about gaming or pushing movies through this adapter, business and everyday use you don't notice any degradation in performance) 5
