Customer Reviews

Had to return this productI hate to rate something low but this was not a good purchase for me. I had to send it back. They refunded without question, which was great. The adaptor never worked right.1good for what it isgood for what it is. This gave me the ability to have two external monitors for a 2012 mac book pro, which officially only supports one external monitor. In my use case it's only good for non-interactive applications, think left open mail app, calendar, social apps like hip chat, lync, etc. Not intended for gaming.4Using USB2 successfullyThis seems to be working pretty well. I'm using it to drive a TV in portrait mode. For some reason, the screen on my laptop flickers (like once every one or two secodns) once I fire up the external TV, but since it's for un-manned use, it's not a big problem. It's just kinda weird. I'm using it for run a slideshow of pictures taken in my photo booth. It is hooked up via USB 2, and doesn't seem to have any significant problems keeping up.4Easy to setup, stable and sturdy... for a short time only2 weeks use only. The hdmi to usb 3.0 adapters work great. Drivers install easily and the DVI-HDMI adapter provided fits tight, perfect. Video stream is clear and stable. No need for special display control software to manage multiple screens. No issue of overheating adapter. Also, it arrived 2 weeks ahead of time.Despite that, the adapters keep disconnecting and displays stop being recognised after all efforts expended. Unable to be used entirely in 3 weeks.3Lenovo Flex 2 + Windows 10 + HP 25vxWorked without the sleep issue as indicated by others in here. 1) I'm using Windows 10. 2) I updated the Intel graphics card driver. 3) I installed the latest StarTech software from StarTech.com/download. 4) I went into Windows Settings / Display and I enabled the new output coming from the USB port. 5) I also disabled the built-in monitor of the laptop. 6) I click Save and wa-la, a dual monitor setup.I put the laptop to sleep and then try to wake it up. No problem.5Love Love Love itGosh, I can not believe I didn't review this.....I have a 12.5 inch laptop that has a lousy graphics card and everyone told me scrap it since I can not use my 23 inch monitor and get a good resolution for it....I only bought the laptop a year ago from Lenovo and it has great specs on everything else including core I7...I only bought the laptop for a back up if I had to leave the office in a hurry I would have my business with me. But now I decided to use my laptop in my office totally and be completely mobile but wanted to use my view sonic monitor that is 23 inches while I was in the office and everything was so distorted when I hooked up the laptop to the monitor....UNTIL I found this StarTech.com USB 3.0 to HDMI 1080p 1-Port Hub External Video Card! It truly works....I do graphics work and it was important for the resolution and colors to be accurate....I totally recommend this product...I can also have a pc plugged in and my laptop at the same time and push a button on my monitor to go back and fourth to the pc to the laptop...LOVE LOVE LOVE this product!!!!5Unbelievably invasive software; I returned it Does it work? Technically, yes. It does turn one USB 3.0 port into two HDMI ports. In order to do so, however, you must install their driver software which is bloated, invasive, and generally crummy. It not only installs KERNEL LEVEL PRIVILEGES (are you kidding me?!), but it stab-murders your native graphics card's controls. ALL of them. Color controls: GONE; custom resolutions: GONE; timing control: GONE. Oh, and do you want to uninstall it? Prepare for a full OS clean install, because it sets permissions that disallow a regular old system restore from deleting it. Now, why on earth would a little dongle need to do that, exactly? I can't think of a single good reason for it. And I am definitely not going to just leave software with those permissions just floating around my machine - how do I know for sure it didn't grant itself permission to something else while it was at it? I don't. And THAT is completely unacceptable. 1THE DRIVERS MAY CAUSE THE BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!! DO NOT PURCHASE THIS!!! The driver required to make this splitter work caused a major crash in windows startup. I lost well over four years of cad drawings and quick books files. Luckily I keep a backup of all of our payroll files just in case. Immediately after downloading the drivers per the installation instructions the software required upon completion to restart the computer. As soon as the computer restarted and just after the windows screen that pops up after the BIOS screen completes I was staring the blue screen of death. While it may seem like a simple way to expand your desktop to two monitors I assure you this is not the product to get you there. I ask you again DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT!!! 1Works great, with a catch.. Updated: I was a little bit skeptical at first about this, I am using it to power (2) NEC EA243WM 24" 1920x1200 monitors and while it worked initially now each time I shutdown or reboot my computer I have to wait until windows loads and unplug it and plug it back in. Windows 10 shows it I m device manager, but it won t output anything onto the monitors until you unplug and plug it back in.After dealing with it not being recognized you get a good quality image. The refresh rate is good and I don't notice any difference from the other two NEC's that come right off my laptop docking station. I haven't tried to push 4K using it, but for 1920x1200 it works great. 2Really worth setting it up correctly in display settings I love the extra screens. I am using this dual card in addition to a single card startech that I purchased last year on a usb3 hub to allow for 4 large screens and the laptop screen, which I rarely use. All ports are HDMI in this install. The important thing to do it configure the monitors, in display settings, so that the same monitor is always checked as the "main display" and all monitors are in the same position under all scenarios of activity - no matter how the monitors decide to fire and in what order. I am using a laptop that has a built in HDMI port, so I made this connection my main display for all cases. First, only hook up the main display. In display settings, check the 2 monitor as the main display. Then add one of the startech adapters and configure it as if it is a partial install and make sure all of the monitors are in the same location you would expect and make #2 the main display again. Now unhook it and do the same with the other startech. Then make sure with all of your startechs loaded, the same location for each monitor is there and #2 is the main display. This fixed all my issues.. since the monitor may flake out for a second every once in a while or when the usb cable is moved, but since everything is in the same place under all conditions, it comes right back and does not freeze. I also have all the monitors powered into one power strip under the monitors and I cut the power to them when I am done for the day and leave the laptop in full power mode (no sleep) on all the time. You also want to make sure you have the latest driver update and that all of your startechs are running the same driver by updating them in Device Manager/Display adapters - right click on the adapter and choose Update Driver software. My old startech is called Trigger 6 and the new one is called MCT USB3.0. They both are running the same driver and work well together. 5Love it, after fixing sleep issue StarTech... if you're reading this, try to fix this, please! I even did analysis and found a workaround for you. The least you can do is take my assessment into account and resolve the issue.Minus 1 star for the fact DisplayLink/StarTech cannot introduce drivers/software to resolve the adapter sleep issue. If I had not figured a solution out on my own, this product would have received only 2-stars.This device is perfect, after I created a batch script to fix the issue where the two external monitors would stay asleep after the computer has been awaken. Will explain how to create your own after the "Cons" section below. Some people have mentioned this occurs to them once in a while. For me, the issue occurs most of the time after the computer wakes from sleep mode.Pros:1) When functional, delivers perfect digital video/audio (audio on HDMI port only) to two external 1920x1080 monitors over a USB 2.0 connection. The device is connected to a hub, which also connects the keyboard and mouse.2) Can display dvd quality to the two external monitors simultaneously, without too much cpu usage.3) I can't speak for gaming, but my primary purpose is to use my laptop as a development machine. For development and other office functions, the adapter is more than adequate.4) Works with Mac Mini running Lion OS as well. No wake-on-sleep issues, like I encountered on Windows 7 and 8 computers.5) Self powered. No additional power required.6) Customer service. They weren't able to figure out the issue, but at least they tried.Cons:1) The two external monitors connected to the adapter typically do not function after the laptop (Windows 8) resumes from sleep mode. I would have to unplug and reattach the USB cable to re-enable the adapter. This is not a good solution, as I'm trying to minimize the wear to the USB port and it's a pain to physically unplug/reattach the USB cable.Fix:I contacted StarTech regarding my issue. They told me that I should disable "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" for the USB Hubs listed within the Device Manager section. Unfortunately, they ignored the fact I told them the issue occurs, REGARDLESS of whether I connect the adapter directly to the laptop OR via a USB hub. But, as I said before, they tried... btw... I did try their recommendation, even though I knew it would not work. It didn't work...Then, I performed some analysis of the processes running on my computer and discovered there is a Windows service that controls functionality and communication between the computer and the adapter... the DisplayLinkService.Through the Windows Services management console, I was able to re-enable the two external monitors by restarting the DisplayLinkService. Therefore, I created a batch file (FixDisplay.bat) and added the following three lines to the batch file and saved it to my desktop for easy access:sc stop DisplayLinkServicesleep 2sc start DisplayLinkServiceLet me explain each command, so you're aware of what's going on and to assure you this is not a malware script. First line stops the DisplayLinkService. Second line pauses the batch request to allow the stop batch request to complete. The final command line starts the DisplayLinkService. Now, whenever the external monitors do not wake up after the computer wakes from sleep mode, I simply double-click the FixDisplay.bat file that I saved to my desktop. Just a note... depending on your UAC setting, you might have to enable the batch file to run under an elevated account (i.e. Administrator), as the commands in the batch file start/stop an installed Windows service. The best solution would be if the drivers actually worked flawlessly to wake up the adapter properly. But short of DisplayLink and/or StarTech fixing this issue, my ad-hoc solution works. The solution definitely beats unplugging/reattaching the USB cable that is inaccessible. 4Simple solution for more monitorsThis is a pretty simple little device that works great! You are most likely not going to be playing Farcry on this thing, but if you want an additional display for your laptop or desktop for basic everyday use, this is a good solution. I am using it with my work laptop so that I can look at more code at once (programming). I think it uses your CPU a fair amount, when I am watching a youtube video on it I notice more CPU usage than if I were watching it on another screen so the better your CPU the better results you will most likely see with this device. I notice slightly reduced FPS for videos when compared to my other screens and when I drag a window around there is a mild "stutter" from not being able to redraw the screen fast enough, but it isn't enough to really be annoying when using it, just enough to notice. When I am typing or surfing the web on it I see no difference from my other screens. The color ect.. is perfectly fine. I am a happy customer, this is exactly what it claims to be!5I use an older 2015 MacBook Pro and this device plays nicely with the usb3 This little external video adapter has made my job more convenient when working at my desk. I use an older 2015 MacBook Pro and this device plays nicely with the usb3.0 ports. My only gripe with this device is when I rotate my external displays to a portrait mode (vertical) the response time for one, or both, my screens lag where its incredibly noticeable. I contacted their customer support creating a ticket and their associates were polite and responded in a timely manner. However, after troubleshooting on both ends, we determined this is a current bug where they have no resolution at this point (3-3-18). They were able to replicate this issue on their end. So if you are looking for a video adapter to simply connect 2 monitors in landscape mode, you're golden. However, if you want to rotate your monitors in portrait (for reading articles or lines of code) then your experience won't be the most enjoyable. Still recommend.UPDATE 8/26/18:I no longer have any use for this device. For macOS, their past update (I believe 10.13.4) screwed up the functionality that prevent you from using monitors via usb cable. This has even affected other related software like Duet Display that allows you to use your iPad as a secondary monitor via lighting cable. If you are a Mac user, I would highly suggest staying away from this product. This is nothing against StarTech as I see the fault being Apples IMO. If you use a windows or linux based system I believe you are good. 4Excellent!This was perfect and worked immediately (after first following the instructions to download/install the latest drivers from their website)! I'm very pleased. This was the third device I tried in order to connect my second monitor to my laptop. The other two products were for my USB-C connection, which unfortunately is not as utd as the devices I had purchased; lots of headaches troubleshooting that. So, I was sure I couldn't go wrong with a good ol' USB 3.0 connection. Oh, and it came with a little DVI adapter, too, for those who need that connection end.5Works, BUT severe frame drop at full 1920x1080 resolutionI have it connected via USB 3.0, of course, and while it does power on and drives my AOC 2752 via HDMI, it does so with lots of jerkiness to the normal windows animations. I mean, merely opening a browser window causes it to be herky-jerky. If you drag and drop something, most of the time you cannot see where the mouse is.Yes, I followed instructions and loaded the most up to date drivers first, BEFORE plugging the little box in.It might work fine with resolutions lower than about 1600px, but that is not my use case. Running Windows 8 laptop here with an Intel integrated card, I expect 1920x1080 to drive at my monitor's native resolution. The Driver for this box reads Magic Control Technology, 9/14/2013, Version 1.1.13.914. Straight from startech.com site. So, yeah, no need for "please reboot machine and apply latest drivers" suggestions here. Been there done that.So I might have to ditch the 2 monitor idea for my Lenovo laptop.2works great, when it works I like this a lot when it works. As others have noted in their reviews, it suffers from three problems that happen intermittently.1. Second monitor does not wake up from sleep. Only option is to unplug device from USB (or use bat file that one review provided)2. Audio gets switched to HDMI. Really seems to confuse up my Skype sessions.3. Second monitor will just freeze. Image remains on the screen but will not refresh. Again only option is to unplug device from USB.It is really simple to use and works great, when it works. If they can work out the issues I am getting then it would be a 5 star product. 3Useless!!!! Do NOT purchase if you like to keep your OS up to date!!!If you re like me, you like to keep your computer s Operating System up to date to take advantage of new features, and more importantly, security advancements to keep your data safe.I had this product for less than a month when Apple came out with a new Operating System. I use this with my work laptop, and my company (like most companies) waited a while to push this OS update out to our computers to ensure all the bugs were worked out and that the OS was compatible with all of our systems. This should have been enough time for StarTech to either update the firmware on this product OR NOTIFY THEIR CUSTOMERS THAT THE NEW OS WOULD RENDER THIS PRODUCT USELESS!!!!!Once I upgraded to the new OS, this product was no longer able to extend to a 2nd display. Instead, it s only able to duplicate a very pixelated, low resolution of your desktop onto your second monitor rendering it useless. So if you re looking to mirror a fuzzy version of your desktop onto a 2nd monitor (again, useless), this product is for you!!!! 1If you only have 1 HDMI port, you need this device to add additional monitors (to have more than 3 windows open) My laptop only has 1 HDMI port, which meant that I could only add a single additional monitor. I needed a USB adapter to add a second external monitor. This little device did the trick. Now I have 3 monitors (including the built-in monitor) and after some adjusting in Windows 10, I have 3 monitors that I can scroll across continuously left to right and have multiple windows open. This is huge when I am working in Excel, PowerPoint and Chrome at the same time. I can even stream videos and music from YouTube and work on the other screens. Very good product. Simple to use by downloading some software and following the instructions. Takes just 5 minutes or so. 5Works as designedThis product works as designed and advertised. I'm giving it 4 stars because:1. For a Mac, getting the right drivers was a pain. The CD that came with it did not have the right driver. Their website did not have the right driver. I had to dig through the product reviews and google to find the right driver for a Mac.2. It eats a lot of power. I cannot use it with my laptop unless I connect my laptop to a power supply.Other than the above 2 problems, it works great and the picture quality is really good too. I use it have multiple monitors at work.4Works great I have a HP ENVY 750-524 that has an integrated graphics card with two HDMI outs on it. I wanted to add two more monitors so I could have a total of four monitors for my work. I only have one PCI slot and if I were to add a graphics card it would disable the integrated one so I had to find something that would let me add two more monitors without disabling the original two. This USB to HDMI adapter works perfectly! Just install the driver, plug it in and it's good to go! I've only been using it for about a week but so far I have had absolutely no issues at all. I only use those two monitors for Microsoft Word and Excel mostly so I don't know how it would work for gaming. I've read some reviews that said that when your computer goes to sleep that some people have had some issues with having to unplug and re-plug in the adapter but my computer is set up to not ever go to sleep so I haven't had any problems at all. All in all I'm very impressed! 5
