Mac and PC Compatible :) Worked as expected. Not sure why devices include disks anymore? Most current laptops don't have drives in them. My MacBook Air and Dell XPS don't even have an ethernet port on it, which lead to the purchase. It's just as easy to download the drivers from the website. No need to add more junk to our landfills. StarTech is the only choice for products in this realm. 5Yes it works well, AND out performs OEM hardware. I purchased this USB 3.0 ethernet adapter because my laptop only had 10/100mbps capability. I am very glad I did. Works perfectly and I have 1gbps fiber internet that now I can use to its full potential. Download speeds with the StarTech adapter are amazing, I am in the high 900's all day long. No drops, no disconnects, no issues at all. Plug it in, windows installed the driver automatically and I was off to the races. I highly recommend this to anyone who has a slow built in adapter in a laptop or desktop. I have another laptop that has 10/100/1000 built in and this device out performs the OEM hardware. Absolutely glad I found this. 5Its FAST Went from 40 something Mbs to 114 Mbs on my network attached server . Switched from an older adaptor that claimed to work with usb 3.0 but never really gave the speed. This just works and doubles your speed but be sure to use cat5e or 6 cables and a gigabit switch and router. 5If you have an ultrabook without ethernet, you need this! Despite the fact that my laptop, a Fujitsu Lifebook U904 has a ethernet port built in, a feat for a ultrabook, I didn't want to risk breaking it. It's one of those slide out and pop open gizmos that seems like it would break, then cost a fortune to fix. I'd much rather carry around a dongle than risk breaking anything.Initially, when I began researching USB to ethernet adapters, I found many of them suffered from poor performance, either slow transfer rates, despite "gigabit" connectivity, overheating, and an overall sense of unreliability. From that, I knew I wanted a few things:1. a USB 3.0 adapter, to achieve gigabit2. an adapter sold or supported by (or warrantied by, really) a reputable company3. something with it's own processor, so it's not sapping off mine.I'm unsure if you've ever heard of StarTech... basically they sell cables for specialized uses. Maybe you need a HDMI to USB cable, for example, they'd likely have it. They're very good at what they do, and I knew this would be a good product just by the brand name.I've used it now for a few months, on a regular basis, and have had zero issue. It's actually saved me a few times, when I needed to do some advanced troubleshooting, packet sniffing, or bridging connections. It gets warm, but not hot. Transfer speeds are consistent, even over USB 2 (where you'll only get 100 meg, or I do, anyway).The only fault I find in it is the StarTech website. It's somewhat difficult finding the proper drivers for this model. There are a few variations of it. So be sure to look at the packaging or the little sticker on the back when you go to update drivers. You may end up with the wrong ones. 5Nothing to write home about Let me start by saying that this isn't all StarTech's fault. The ethernet IC they chose; the ASIX - AX88179 is the problem. Don't get me wrong, it works, however only in the most basic interpretation. I only blame StarTech for being less than forthcoming about their product in the specification sheet. For example, they claim that it supports jumbo frames. While the adapter does support 2k and 4k frames, the AX88179 chip is limited to a max of 4k, not the 9k standard for a jumbo frame. They also state that it will support IEEE 802.1q VLAN tagging. However, it only supports a single VLAN, making that feature almost useless. If all I needed was access to one VLAN, I could do that at the network switch level and not spend the extra time searching for a USB NIC that supports it.Otherwise, the device works but doesn't stand out from the crowd of USB NICs. It ins't even fast enough to justify USB 3. 3Beats buying a new motherboard. With Windows 10, I just plugged it into a USB3.0 socket, plugged in the Ethernet cable into it, turned the computer on, shortly after the boot the 2 lights lit on the unit. Internet Icon was activated on taskbar screen. Have internet, checked the speed; 90MPS down, 26 upload. Was getting 25MPS down, 20up with the USB2 and the WI-FI. The Ethernet circuit on this motherboard stopped working, I've then got a new MB, but I used it in another computer. The StarTech came with a installation CD, but Win 10 was ready for it and I didn't have to use it. I've never had a Ethernet circuit on a MB go before. So if your Ethernet on your Motherboard goes, and WIFI is too slow for you, this is the way to go. 5Great Works with the Nintendo Switch! 4Has worked great for several years now This thing has been working flawlessly for several years now. Keep in mind that you will not get full gigabit bandwidth compared to a built-it adapter, but it is still fast enough for most purposes. 5Not good for Labs (GNS3 to Real Hardware) I bought this with the intention of connecting my virtual network environment to my real hardware for lab purposes. For the most part, it seems to work for normal stuff like connecting your computer to an Ethernet cable for inernet connectivity.The problem arise when trying to connect virtual and real lab environments. I have experienced flapping interfaces between my virtual router and physical layer 3 switch. I have tried numerous configurations and routing protocols, but the flapping interfaces remains.I won't let that fact ding this review too much. I am sure that for most people who aren't doing networking labs, this is just fine. That said, if you wan't a NIC for your lab, then you may want to explore options. 3Awesome! Just as good as my on-board port. I purchased this because the Ethernet port on my Samsung NP700Z7C laptop broke. (The plastic flap that holds in the cable snapped off.)I am pulling just over 100MB/s transfer (usb 3.0 port and gigabit connection)to and from my file server...just as good as my onboard Ethernet port. There are many options in the drivers settings in device manager. But only supports Jumbo frames of 4K. The led indicator lights are molded into the front of the port itself. The actual port is plastic, but has a ring of metal on the outer inside of the port. Cable clicks in securely.I have tested this device in both windows 7 and Windows 8 and it performs well. The drivers were automatically installed via Windows upon plugging in the adapter. (As with any device, You need to be already connected to the internet(wifi etc) for Windows to search and auto download the driver, otherwise it will fail to install).Really good product. 5
