Customer Reviews

Good device, definitely recommend. The StarTech SAT32MSAT257 mSATA SSD adapter turned out to be a pretty good addition to my gear collection. It is identical to the unit sold by Micro SATA Cables so I can't be sure who actually manufactures the device. I can tell you that it does exactly what it is designed for... it allows you to install a SATA III (6Gbps) mSATA SSD for use in a standard 2.5" SATA bay and run it at full speed. What attracted me to this adapter is the "open frame" design. Anyone with any amount of experience with this type of gear should be able to agree that many mSATA drives run hot. When mSATA drives are installed in full enclosures the heat can be trapped inside the enclosure which increases the drives temp and eventually reduces its lifespan. Some enclosures have thermal pads that help transfer heat from the mSATA drives to the metal cases of the enclosures but that functionality isn't universal and isn't always as reliable as it should be. With an open frame adapter such as this one you have better options for managing heat through airflow paths or through custom heat transfer solutions depending on your setup.Overall the unit does what it is designed to do and I believe it does it well. 5Installs easily. But didn't work when connecting a SATA optical drive to burn DVDs/CDs. I wanted to replace an old IDE/PATA DVD/CD Combo drive with a new optical drive capable of reading and writing double layer DVDs. I bought an LG Super Multi optical drive. The adapter is super easy to install. Just look at the photos. It's really a pretty cool little device. Unfortunately, I couldn't get it to work with the LG SATA optical drive.Prior to installing the LG, I went into the Device Manager and uninstalled the old IDE/PATA DVD/CD Combo device. I also uninstalled all of the ATA Channels and the ATA/SATA Controllers. I powered down and swapped out the IDE/PATA drive with the SATA one, connecting it using the adapter. Powered back up and the drivers reinstalled automatically. The new SATA drive seemed to work just fine at first. It was able to read discs without any problems. Unfortunately, I was never able to successfully burn a disc. One of two things would happen. My computer would either freeze and lock up during the burn, or the burn would finish, but it would say that it was unsuccessful.Freezing during the burn was the worst case. I would have to forcefully turn off the power and restart my computer. This happened, or the burn would not succeed, with complete regularity. So, although the optical drive read discs just fine, it would simply not write to discs at all. I really wanted that to work, but it was to no avail.I ended up installing an LG IDE/PATA Super Multi optical drive that supported double layer discs. The write attempts that failed using the SATA drive succeeded with no problems using the IDE drive. There must be something about connecting a SATA drive using the adapter that interfered with the drive's ability to burn discs.I still thing the adapter is a very cool and useful device. And I'm sure that there are other use cases beyond connecting a SATA optical drive where the device works perfectly fine. Perhaps the adapter works connecting a hard drive or SSD. So I'm still giving it four stars. It would be five if only the device worked for me connecting a SATA drive. 4Device is NOT Bootable I really wanted to like this device. I do get acceptable performance from it when it is working.Where to start? This device is not bootable. There is a serious problem with the device providing random serial numbers whenever the adapter is enabled. I had to MODIFY the linux kernel to disable serial number validation as sleep/resume would crash my computer every time. I'm forced to use another device as my boot loader. The adapter does not provide any parallelism. 4K random reads are abysmal at 32MB/s. On the other end of the spectrum, 1M reads/writes can reach 350MB/s. Basically you will notice SSD delays though it is a tiny bit faster than a regular hard drive. I would not recommend this device to anyone, especially the average user. 1Your experience may vary; read below I have mixed feelings on this device. On one hand, it promises to make old PATA drives easy-to-use SATA-compatible, and in that regard it works. However, I tried two examples of this, from different sellers, and got what appeared to be artificially limited transfer rates, on the order of ~4.2 MB/s sequential, which is far below the ability of the ancient PATA drives I was using, and was also below the throughput of cheaply available PATA-to-USB2 adapters/enclosures. I tried multiple combinations of drives, SATA-USB3 docks, and host PCs, and nothing changed, and StarTech support wasn't able to offer a solution so I had to return both docks. There was no point in using these because I already have the aforementioned USB2 adapters which are less of a bottleneck. The StarTech support rep was able to get expected throughput in his test bench, however, so apparently this could work as intended, but I tried enough hardware combinations and couldn't get it to work satisfactorily. 2Flawless victory in using SATA with ancient Gear Perfect solution. I was rebuilding a 15 year old synthesizer which has Celeron CPU and originally a 20GB EIDE/PATA HD; later cloned to 80GB. Now I wanted to clone to SSD. After trying a cheapo $4 adapter, would not work regardless of pin assignments. This one worked first time out of the gate. Spend a little more to get something that doesn't suck :-)-- update --to clarify; this review is for the adapter :: "StarTech.com IDE to SATA Hard Drive or Optical Drive Adapter Converter - 40-Pin PATA to 2.5 inches SATA HDD / SSD / ODD Converter" 5After hooking up to an IDEa drive and attempting to wipe the drive for 2 weeks it never stopped After hooking up to an IDE drive and attempting to wipe the drive for 2 weeks it never stopped, contacted support and I guess they thought I was kidding when I asked for help the second time. I would not recommend purchasing this piece of shit! A better option would be to use Hirem's boot disk to wipe the drive. Unfortunate for me in this case I needed a print out to certify the drive had been wiped and I obviously could not produce that so I did not get paid for that aspect of the gig, which sucked as it was a nice sum of cash, but that is ok knowing that their technical support did nothing and I attempted to open 2 cases to no avail. And I buy a fair amount or gear form Startech, was really disappointment by them on this deal!!!!!!!!!!!! 1but I have thrown out many other boards getting to this one If you need a product like this. This has everything you would need for ANY ide sata swap, the pcb board is top quality and it has jumper pins to choose any typical hard drive set up (master/slace/cable select)Works even with an OG Xbox with unleashx installed (2TB HDD install)The board comes with a molex power splitter -Connector powers the board(and sata drive) and also has power for a second IDE drive (molex female for power in, one molex out splitter for an extra ide drive and power pin out for the board itself to power the board and connected the sata drive)It may be a little more pricey compared to other boards, but this is a no fail boardI wanted to take one star off only because ide data connector on the board has bare pins, but I have thrown out many other boards getting to this oneIf you need a product like this.. This will work for ANY application 5Perfect for soft-modded Xbox If you're looking to soft-mod an original Xbox, buy this adapter and no others. It worked like magic to upgrade my Xbox to a 500GB unit, perfect for playing tons of emulators available for the system. Also be sure to grab an 80-conductor cable that's 24" in length. Amazon has them, and they're a must-have. If you use the stock cable, the system will run the hard drive in PIO mode, which is slow. That's true of all adapters, but this one absolutely works great. 5A durable product that does a job well done Recently I picked up the StarTech.com 4 Bay Hard Drive Docking Station for 2.5/3.5 HDD after I upgraded from a 4 bay Mac Pro to a Macbook Pro. I wanted to maintain using my SATA drives I pulled from the Mac Pro and realized I still had several IDE drives I had collected from older Windows Based Computers.Insert the Startech.com SATA IDE adapter. The docking station already worked exactly I needed it to and this adapter just was an extension of how wonderful these line of products have worked for me. I should of paid more attention to the instructions, though. I thought it was something I simply slipped into the dock itself. Instead I have to manually set up each drive with the adapter. I did not see this fact as I was in a rush and using amazon on a mobile device. Attaching the adaptor only takes a few seconds but it now breaths new life into a large collection of IDE drives that are, on average, about 400GB in size.A reviewer already mentioned that using the small screws on a drive with a screw driver is fine for one or two drives but, when you are doing a large collection, these Solid Brass CPU Case Thumbscrews, 6 Pack are a time saver as well as prevents an incredible amount of frustration. Also, make sure you set up the master/slave settings on your IDE drive.Overall a recommended purchase. It is a durable product that has saved me hundreds of dollars by breathing new life into my older hard drives which I no longer have to replace with SATA drives for the time being. 5These were a great edition to my hard drive tool kit Works like it should and for the operational part, I have no issues. I bought two for a direct clone ability.I have seen a lot of complaining about having to put the "little screws" in and so forth. It takes seconds and if this is the main killer of the deal for you, get a converter cable and fish it down in the and it will do the same. The wiring is tight but very manageable if you just guide it to the correct spot when sliding the drive down into the adapter. Press your finger forward into the IDE cable to allow it to fold forward and then gently press the power cable to the left as you push the rest of the way down. Look at the space you have and simply fill it with the cables provided.FYI - When you are used to cloning SATA drives, there is some shock value at the time it takes to now clone IDE instead. It has been years since anyone really uses IDE as a standard and I cloned a 1.87gb partition. Buy a good book, maybe play some video games.....get some extra work done, whatever; this is not getting done anytime soon but it DOES get that drive cloned.****extra**** I am using this device in a Startech USB 3.0 cloner. This thing has saved me quite a few times and i see people using this adapter as a connection converter, many people are not even using a cloner and are just interfacing directly to the pc for access. There is absolutely no need to buy this if you just want a connection to the pc. If you plan on just laying it on the desk for a while to access files and maybe clone through software, just buy the converter as a cable. Easier to store, easier to hook the drive up, just easier everything. These were a great edition to my hard drive tool kit 4
