Customer Reviews

Awesome having both powered USB 3.0 and Ethernet all on one card This is a really excellent card. I replaced an Intel Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter card that only provided a single RJ-45 port with the StarTech because I needed powered USB 3.0 ports in order to get a new monitor with accompanying soundbar working. The card is powered using a SATA cable. It provides power to the card, which in turn powers the USB 3.0 ports up to 900mA per port.I connected my monitor to one of the USB 3.0 ports using an uplink cable in order to power all of the USB ports on the monitor. The soundbar is connected to one of the monitor's USB 3.0 ports. An HDMI connection from my video card to the monitor provides both audio and video. The soundbar is my default audio device, which works great with this setup.I also bought a 1 TB Western Digital USB 3.0 external drive that I connect to the StarTech card as well and it works great. Having both USB 3.0 ports that are fully powered along with an RJ-45 port for Ethernet all on one card is definitely convenient. My computer, a Dell Dimension E510, is running Windows 7 Home Premium so it didn't install drivers automatically via plug and play. I didn't bother with the drivers that came with the card. I instead downloaded the latest drivers from StarTech's web site. I installed the USB 3.0 driver first, then the Ethernet driver. As soon as the drivers were installed everything worked. No rebooting required. The only caveat is with the orientation of the USB 3.0 ports. When the card is installed, the USB ports are vertically oriented. So USB plugs don't fully insert into the ports because they bump into the metal frame surrounding the PCI card's bracket. Everything works fine. It's just something to be aware of. If the ports were oriented horizontally, this wouldn't be an issue, but then there probably wouldn't be room for three USB ports. 5Prepare yourself for cutting your case to actually plug anything in it No way to plug anything in I had to cut my case to make it work 3Drivers for Windows 7 64-Bit cause System Crashes With the circuit card installed in my case / motherboard combination (Silverstone SST-TJ05B-T / Asus Sabertooth X79), the USB cables can't be plugged into the connectors on the card. It's aligned too far to one side, which obstructs the connectors. There haven't been any alignment issues with the other cards I've installed in the system (Video Card, Multi-Port Ethernet, WiFi). With this one, I had to plug the cables into card (though the back slot opening of the case) before plugging the card into the motherboard. I know this is putting some stress on the card and motherboard slot, but it does fit. If the 4 USB connectors had been rotated 90 on the card, it would be much easier to plug the cables in.With the card plugged in and the system booted, Windows tries, and fails, to install the Drivers automatically. If I download and install the latest RENESAS-USB3-Host-Driver (v3.0.23.0, 28-SEP-2012) from the StarTech PEXUSB3S44V Support web page, my system crashes every time it is awakened from Sleep - even if nothing is plugged into any of the cables. As long as no Drivers are installed (rendering the card useless), my systems runs, sleeps, and wakes up just fine. But with the Drivers installed the system will only run OK until it goes to sleep - then it either doesn't wake up (have to press the Reset Button) or crashes with a Machine_Check_Exception. I suppose I could turn off the Sleep mode, but I don't really see that as being the solution for flaky drivers.Does anyone have this card working successfully with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit? Which Driver version are you using? What System Power Settings are you using (including Advanced Power Settings)? Thanks for any help! 3Oculus RIFT USB issues? WELL MORE!! Install this fixed usb issues. This product is simply AWESOME!!! I was driven abolutley mad for 6 months with Oculus rift and my 2 port SIIG - USB 3.0 (JU-P20612-S1) running through a 7 port usb 3.0 hub purchased from walmart. Everytime I tried to use my vr headset I would have to plug and unplug, plug and unplug and alot of times restart windows.Well no more!! I installed this baby and no more usb issues. No more tracking chatter.Didn't even need the drivers cd. windows 10 picked it up and installed the drivers and I AM EXTREMLY HAPPY WITH THIS PRODUCT.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! 5American Quality Best of BestA quality no nonsense AMERICAN Co. plug and play unit. Installed on a new Corsair Air flow cab with an ASUS Prime X570 Pro mobo. Thank you Star Tech.5Not compatible with X299 chipset. After installing the card and seeing "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" in the device manager, I attempted to update the drivers and firmware available on the StarTech website. When the firmware would not update, I contacted the 24/7 StarTech support live chat. I was informed by the representative that:"Unfortunately the x299 chipset is a known incompatibility with this card, which we are unable to correct. While this may change with chipset updates down the road, currently it won't be possible to get the card working."The representative even went so far as to say:"Very sorry about that. Unless you can repurpose this card in another system it's best to return the card to the seller for refund."I am very upset this known incompatibility was not posted anywhere such that I could exclude this card from my search.== Bottom Line ==Do not purchase for X299 chipset motherboard 1Works flawlessly with the Oculus Rift. Some install glitches easily fixed. It works great. No drivers to install. Totally compatible with Win 10's driver and the Oculus Rift. Created and issue for me because it uses a PCI-e X4 socket and that disables 4 Pci-E X1 sockets. There is only so much bandwidth to go around. You do get 4 dedicated controllers but for me I think the 4 port Fresco sold here (KTU3FR-4P) is acceptable and does work fine with the Rift as well at 1/3 of the price. If you want the best this is it provided you can afford to trade off you PCI Express x1 sockets. Not sure is all MOBO's do this (mine was a Gigabyte) but read your manual carefully, I have to say owning the Rift gave me a crash course on USB controllers. I also got a bios error when I installed it and had to reassign drive letters to all my USB 3.0 hard drives which all disappeared. 4Fixed my compatibility problem!I have a StarTech USB3 capture card that doesn't work with my motherboard's built-in usb3 controller, and the troubleshooting guide recommended this one. It works just fine now! A little bit pricey compared to some other USB3 controllers out there, but as long as my capture card works I'm happy. Please do note that since the USB ports are perpendicular to the expansion slot, you will need to be precise when screwing the card into the slot. If you line it up and put in usb plugs into both ends before you go to screw the card down, you can make sure it will be lined up properly. Also, please note that in my case at least the extra SATA power port had to be connected in order for the card to function.5Lots of ports in a little spaceThis is for the 4 external port version. Added this to a small server running Server 2012R2. The Renesas chipset drivers were already included in the OS, so it was true plug-and-play. This card was added for fast transfers to external backup drives, and did not disappoint. This was one of only a few solutions for fitting four parts in a low-profile board space. Some applications with dongles or thumb drives might have an issue with the tight spacing between ports, but my various cables plugged in without any problems. Transfers to the drives now take place at the maximum speed of the actual SATA drives inside the enclosures, shaving lots of time from a 2-3TB backup.5USB 3.0 with Big Power I took the advice of the other reviewers that have tried the other lower priced items and glad I got this Big Power USB 3.0 Card. It's as strong as they say and glad I did. The price is worth it if you don't want any problems. It was a plug and play with Windows 10 Home v1809 and smooth install. I used a PCIe X8 slot (longer slot not PCI) and it works fine. My MSi mainboard didn't have a PCIe X4 slot . It needs power so make sure you have another SATA or IDE power plug available. With four 3.0 ports the Oculus Rift has its own dedicated 5 Gbps ports for Headset and Sensors(3).UPDATE 04-29-2019: After using the card for a while I discovered that it really needs its own dedicated X4 slot. It does work good and OK but after the PC goes to sleep Oculus app says it wants to calibrate the sensors again. I wasn't up for that task and discovered after a quick reboot the sensors were still aligned. It also happens when I take the PC off line from the network or internet. So I put the 3 sensors back into the PC mainboard and the headset on the new PCIe card and all is better, That left 3 slots open for something else. At least the headset has a high speed dedicated USB 3.0 port. Probably over kill buying a pricey USB 3.0 card but I feel was worth it and not worrying about bandwidth. Above is a picture to show what I mean by slot type.I have no regrets about how much the card cost It's made of high quality and the gaming PC deserve it. 5Work perfectlyI've only had this a few weeks but so far, it is working just fine.Another reviewer complained about it not working in a HP case and at first, I had the same problem. But the problem was that all adapters and slot blocks have to be aligned precisely. All that was necessary was to release the single lock for all the adapters (this is a tool free HP Z420 case) and line them up correctly. Then the card would properly align in the slot with no problems connecting cables. What would I do differently, if I were designing the card (of course, it might be more expensive):1. for a 4 slot card, use horizontal rather than vertical lots as that would just make life easier for the users2a. for vertical slots, provide 7 slots --or--2b. for vertical slots, also provide 3 Firewire 800 slots (I'd pay another $30 for a card with this feature)5Got this to expand my USB port availability after purchasing ...Got this to expand my USB port availability after purchasing an Oculus Rift. Worked flawlessly, no need to install drivers for it, my Oculus (3 sensor setup) was recognized as a USB 3.0 device.5Driver installation issue, driver CD does not contain the necessary drivers New update: After installing the correct driver, device manager tells me that the device cannot start (code 10), which basically means the device is probably not compatible with my system, probably because this PCI board may not be compatible with my Intel Q65 Express chipset.Original rating:Driver CD is an old, mis-matched collection of drivers for about 15 different and unrelated products. Took a while to find the correct driver as the instructions specify the name for a folder that does not exist. Still cannot use the ports for some reason even after installing the appropriate drivers, with a "PCI to PCI bridge" driver error. I'm going to contact StarTech directly for tech support but I'm a little disappointed that the driver CD included was not only generic and not product-specific, but also did not contain the driver I needed. Update: contact with Startech indicated old drivers on CD. Downloaded updated drivers from StarTech website. Still no joy. 2Finally a USB3 Card that really Performs!OverallI went through a few USB3 cards and they just barely beat USB2 performance, when they worked at all. So it was a great pleasure when this just plugged in and worked after loading the drivers, which come supplied on a CD.This board is really fast and lets you get the most out of your USB3 drives, especially external SSD drives, they really scream on this interface card. Hard disks or SSD is about the only thing that will benefit from USB3, most other things are slower, like a keyboard or mouse, even a TV USB box does not even tax USB2, but no doubt you will get a major boost in performance if you have USB3 drives currently plugged into USB2 ports.Overall this is a great product that does exactly what is says it will do. I would not hesitate to suggest this to a friend and am very happy with this purchase. This cost about twice as much as many of them but well worth it, it works.Hardware Installation Rating = 5The physical install is very easy, open your PC, find an empty slot and plug it in. You can optionally provide the card additional power by plugging in a spare SATA power cord in your PC. If you do not have a SATA type connection or no spare power cords in your PC you can get one from Amazon for under 10 bucks. (Older PC tend to have 4 pin Molex power connectors, if that is your case you can get a Molex to SATA adaptor here for under 10 bucks. The good news is that power cable is not required for the board to work unlike most of them, and if everything you plan to plug into it is powered itself then there is no need for the internal power. If you do plan to use the USB3 ports to power things you should hook up the extra power.Software Installation Rating = 5As easy as it gets, pop in the supplied CD and run set-up, reboot, and that is it. The CD I got had the most current drivers which was nice.Performance Rating = 5The real test was benchmarking it, with my original USB3 card I could not get more than about 90MB/s on a file copy, with this I am hitting 240 - 270MB/s, benchmarks and my USB3 SSD drive is insanely fast. With this card all of my USB3 drives are about twice as fast as with my old USB3 card. (the old one came with my PC and had an older chipset, it was faster than USB2 but not a lot.)Note: if you have USB2 drives this is not going to make them go faster unless you have an underperforming USB interface, which is unlikely) However if you have been using USB3 devices with USB2 you will be blown away how much faster they go. I also tried some old USB2 drives and they worked perfectly, albeit slower by nature than a USB3 drive, but it hit full USB2 speeds with USB2 drives. My system: HP Pavilion H8-1090t / Intel i7-990 Hex Core / 24GB RAM / 1xSSD internal SATA(500GB) / 2xSATA internal hard drives / 2xUSB3 2TB external drives (Seagate) / 1xUSB3 SSD (U32 Shadow)5Died after a year - HOWEVER...lifetime warranty and was probably the simplest and quickest return I have ever done. Fantastic! Bought this in March 2016 and it has already died (disappointing for a $60+ card).. Contacted Technical support for the manufacturer and found out that it does have a lifetime warranty so in the process of doing that now. Will update this once process is complete.Update - 7/20: StarTech sent me an RMA the same day I called to have this replaced. I filled it out and sent it back to them. They then emailed me back the same day and said they had shipped out a replacement and I did not need to return the defective item. I wish all companies stood behind their warranties like this and made it such an easy process. Will definitely purchase from this company again! 5Highly unstable. This seems to have some issues, I don't know if mine is faulty or what, usually startech stuff is good. This randomly seems to stop recognizing devices for no apparent reason until the whole system is powered off and power supply disconnected. Also, while this is installed with it's SATA power connector connected the computer won't shut off, it just reboots when it should power off.I think this will be going back to Amazon.1File Corruption (Verified by Binary Comparison)The card and drivers installed easily enough. In testing transfer speed through a PCIe x1 slot I saw 92 MB/s. However, transferred files using this USB card failed a basic test. The card and/or driver could not produce bit-perfect 1:1 copies. Files transferred/copied through the card always had file corruption issues. This was verified using binary file comparisons with the original and copied file. Maybe the problem rests with the driver, maybe it's the hardware, maybe it's both. I am using Windows 7 x64 on a Dell XPS machine. Also, the plastic on the PCB board where the SATA power connector sits was cracked/broken. That didn't prevent attaching a SATA power source. I can't recommend this card if it can't do the basic thing computer equipment is meant to do: accurately and precisely make perfect copies of data (and therefore making it useless for file back-up/archiving purposes).1Works Good, Installs EasilyI needed to add some USB 3 ports to my machine as it only has USB 2. This card has 4 ports and good reviews, so figured I'd give it a try. The card came packaged with printed instructions and a driver installation CD. StarTech seems to be a notch above similar products so it's worth the few extra dollars in my opinion. This card installed easily along with the driver software into a Windows 7 64-bit machine. I didn't have any problem with case interfering with the USB 3 connectors as mentioned by a couple of other reviewers. This fits in a Dell T3400 case without any issues. My machine had a spare SATA power cable that went right onto the rear of the card. The cable in some computers may not be long enough, so you might need to order an extender cable no matter what brand of adapter card you chose. The card runs cool and so far no problems of any kind...5Worked on an EVGA boardI bought this for my EVGA X58 SLI Micro system board running Win10 Pro. Plugged into a PCIe II slot, I get between 2 and 2.5 X the speed of the USB2 ports. Not full USB 3 speeds, but the best the system board will do.No issues installing this card - it worked as soon as the software drivers were installed.4
