Customer Reviews

No size description There is no mention as to what size the cable is. Size is mentioned in the questions, but they claim it's 6 feet long. This is NOT 6 feet long. More like 17 inches long.I gave this a 3 star because of the lack of length in the description. To darn expensive for a 17 inch long cable. There are others out there for the same price but are 6 feet long. 3Love It The only con I can think of is that you need to install the driver, other than that, it works great. I love these FTDI adapters and I especially like the the status LEDs because you know something is working if you can't see it. The RJ45 -> serial cables are nice because they don't need drivers, but they use up your NIC port, so if you're working in a datacenter that doesn't have wireless and you're depending on a direct connection to a switch, a USB-based adapter is great. 5Connects RS-232 DTE device to PC USB port You need this if you want to connect a device with an RS-232 port configured as DTE (Data Terminal Equipment) to a computer with only USB ports. Because the computer is also configured as DTE, you need the null modem feature that this cable provides. In addition, the COM port emulation uses the very desirable FTDI chip set, which, I have found from experience, works well without issues.Note: if your device (from a reputable manufacturer) has a male connector (either DB-9 m or DB-25 m), it's a good sign that it is DTE. 5Good reliable UBS to null modem cable One of the nicest null modem cables I've used. Works flawlessly in Windows 10 off a USB 3 port. I love how it has lights on it so I can confirm rcx and trx signals. I've used this successful to log into a number of network appliance consoles. No drivers were needed in Windows 10, it was plug and play. It does come with a driver disk if you need it for older OSes.Due not that the DB9 side stick out a little bit further than normal because it has the electronics in it for the USB to Serial conversion, keep that in mind if you have to work in a tight space. 5Great all-in-one serial adaptor Great because it uses FTDI chipset which is very important. Prolific chipsets are not as reliable. Plugged it in my Win10 PC and let Windows deal with it. Said it installed OK but I had to do a driver update in Control Panel Device Manager. I pointed it to the included driver disk's Win10 FTDI folder and it worked great. Next best thing is it has a built in null modem and the correct female DB9 connector so no having to use separate null modem or gender changer. The final plus are the LEDs. The green LED (transmitting to USB end of cable) blinks to let you know data is uploading from the device while an orange one blinks to indicate serial traffic coming to the device on the RS-232 DB9 end. This eliminates another bulky serial port tester and allows for instant visual feedback of serial port activity. Finally, the DB9 has twin thumb screws to secure it to the device to ensure it doesn't come off even if the device is handled. I personally use this to manage my vintage HP 48SX calculator inside an environmental case that has a RS-232 male connector on the outside. 5Must have for ham radio. This is a must have for ham radio users wanting to do packet. With devises like the TT4 this will save you time and keep your set up cleaner. It is more than others but having verified FTDI chip is much better than knockoff prolific chip. Also with FTDI whenever you plug it in and it gets a port assignment that cable will always have that port, making it easier to set up your configs since you will know what port it is without having to open device manager. 5Disappointing, frustrating and waist of time & money For the most part, I have been pleased with the StarTech products I have purchase. However, I continue to fight this device and it's functionality in Windows 10. With the Prolific drivers I have been able to get this working and identify the chipset as PL-2303 RA which is listed as supported on WIndows 10. Currently it is hit or miss, as to if the connected USB is correctly identified and linked to the device/driver instance. At this point, I can't tell if it's poor drivers or a counterfeit chip. Very disappointing and a frustrating waist of time and money!I have a similar product (Null Modem USB to Serial) from StartTech with a FTDI chipset.. It has worked flawlessly. I will be investigating a standard USB to Serial adapter utilizing the FTDI chipset in hopes of having a stable product when needed. 1Convenice When You Always Need a Null Modem This is a great cable for prototyping if your board doesn't support a TTL connection. Being able to monitor if RX and TX are both working is very useful. If you always need a null modem for your designs because that is the way the plug is wired, this saves you the annoyance of needing an extra adapter. Especially nice if you have to travel often with cables as I do.However, if your board/device does not have a crossover you should look for a cable without a null modem built in so you don't need a null modem adapter to "cross back" to get a direct connection. Most importantly, this uses the rock solid FTDI FT232R chip which in my experience is by far the most reliable in terms of the chip itself and drivers for modern Windows(Vista+) versions vs the common Prolific and ATEN chip-sets found in most other cables like this. 5It does it's job for DB9 and even has an adapter for DB25 This cable works as intended, nothing fancy about it. It is just a 9-Pin Serial to USB cable, with a 25-Pin Parallel adapter. Didn't use the adapter, but I am sure it works fine. These cables either work or they don't, and there ain't much to go wrong. Installation was pretty simple, just had to plug it in, run the setup .EXE on the disk and it did it's thing. I needed this to link up to a Cisco 1710 Modular Access Router, and this worked perfect to bridge the connection from the Com to Serial cable over to USB since the computer I was using didn't have a Serial port. IMHO it was worth the $13 or so I paid for this. 5Gets the job done! It gets the job done as a serial console for embedded UNIX servers. I plug it into the USB port on my MacBook Pro, and then connect the DB9 to the embedded board. I didn't have any problems using this to set up FreeBSD and OpenBSD on some low-power servers from PC Engines (apu1d4 and apu2c4). 5
