Compatible with MACH3 This worked for controlling my CNC setup with mach3. It was installed in a Dell XPS 430 running windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit. Using it with the sainsmart 5-Axis Breakout board. 5Worked perfectly Worked perfectly. Installed for a vintage LaserJet 5. The PCL drivers for these classic LJ printers are included in the OS, I believe, so once I got the card installed, everything took place without intervention by me (Windows 7). For other printers you'll need to get drivers first.There are two different versions of this item which appear to be identical. One of them (this one) comes with a full-height bracket already installed and a half-height bracket in the package - in case you want to change it. The other version is the exact opposite: The half-height bracket is already installed, with a full-height bracket also included in the package. You can't go wrong either way. 4just what I needed for an old printer and new PC Amazon was the seller. My new PC (running Windows XP Home SP3) didn't have a parallel port, and I didn't want to get rid of the old printer just yet...since it still works great. I bought this card from Amazon for 20 bucks. It's small...just like it shows. And it works just like it should.A driver CD comes with it. The CD has 7 folders with many sub-folders under each folder. That was confusing; here is the folder list:* AV Grabber* EM2860* ExpressCard* LAN* PCI_IO* PCIe* SOUNDI visited the Star Tech website, searched for part # PEX1P, and found the drivers in one zip file...much easier. The zip file contains 3 folders: Linux, Windows, Windows CE. The files in the Windows folder are:pport.infpport.catReadMe.rtfYou can find those 2 driver files on the CD in this folder:\PCIe\OXPCIe952\Parallel\I recommend using the driver files on the CD, since they are dated 2010 and 2009, while the files from the website are dated 2007 (and the file size is different).Also, depending on your version of Windows, Windows may find generic driver files by itself, which means you might not need the driver files on the CD after all.I don't know what all the other folders on the CD are for.The ReadMe.rtf file contains the following info:> Oxford Semiconductor PCI Express Devices> Windows Parallel Port Support>> The parallel port functionality of the OXPCIe840 and OXPCIe952 are fully supported> by standard operating system drivers, including ECP and EPP operation.>> However unless the vendor and device ids for the add-in card using these devices> are already recognised by Windows, you will need to explicitly tell the operating> system to use its standard driver for this device.>> This driver package provides a solution for Oxford Semiconductor's vendor id and> the relevant default OXPCIe840 and OXPCIe952 device ids.> This supports Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Server 2003 and Server 2008.There are also a data sheet and a manual on Star Tech's website, if you're interested. I struggled for several hours trying to figure out how to get this thing going. I grew more and more angry as time progressed. I even attempted to install Windows XP 32 bit on my machine, but the machine would not support a 32 bit OS. After that, I considered trying to locate a much older machine to run my CNC router. This proved to be extremely difficult.I ended up purchasing a Smoothstepper. I don't have it running yet, but I don't see it being a problem.Do not waste your money on this card unless you already have a 32-bit OS. And if you still do have a 32-bit OS running.... 1Simple Solution - Better Instructions Would Help! What's not to like. Every StarTech product I've purchase has lived up to my performance expectations. I expect nothing less than an easy install letting Windows 7. load any needed drivers. Purchase this my new computer motherboard didn't come with a port for our HP 895Csi.May 25, 2014 Update. Always had good luck with StarTech products and given them 5 star ratings. NOT THIS ONE!!! Installation was easy. However, it Went downhill from there. On restart, the computer saw the card but did not know what to do with it. Loaded the CD that came with the card. It is a JOKE! There are more files with a bunch of information but no, I repeat, no installation files. Went to the Startech web site. Downloaded a.zip file that was suppose to have the drivers needed. Extracted the files. Again, no setup/installation files. If your like me, it is very frustrating going through folder after folder looking for installation files that are not there. If there are setup/installation files, StarTech has them nicely hidden. Don't purchase this card and install it in a computer with Windows 7/64 bit OS unless you want alot of frustration.May 31 Update. Received and email from StarTech. I had been trying to connect an old iomega 100 zip drive to my old xp machine which has an expresscard slot and this product worked for me. Previously the usb/parallel port adapter was not working with a storage device connection for me and I had doubts that this would really work. After many trials and errors what worked was to install only the startech expresscard in the slot and go to device manager and update/install the drivers from their disc for the entry PCI expresscard under Port(COM&LPT). I changed the port for the PCI device to LPT1 vs LPT3 and selected enable Legacy Plug and Play then I securely attached the PCI with it's connector to the IOMega zip drive and restarted my PC(as mentioned make sure all the connectors are pushed in properly). After the machine came back on I went to device manager and noted a VM0 device under Disk Drives and I selected the option to update/install using the windows recommended drivers. During the driver install I noted a message iomega legacy and afterward a new F: drive was present under windows explorer. I noted that if I unplugged the pci card and later on plug it back in the drive showed a red question mark under windows explorer and I had to restart my PC with the pci and iomega both attached and then the drive was once again present. 5Requires Manual Intervention with Windows 7 I bought this card because my new (home-built) Windows 7 computer had no parallel port integrated into the motherboard, and I still wanted to use my perfectly serviceable HP Laserjet. I began by installing the card, but not attaching the printer. On my setup, Windows obviously detected the new card since it showed up in Device Manager, but Windows did not offer to install any drivers. In Device Manager, the card was shown with a yellow exclamation point, indicating that it wasn't working properly: Of course not, since the drivers had not yet been installed! At that point I installed the drivers manually from Device Manager, and that went quickly on my Win7 Professional 64-bit machine -- fortunately, 64-bit drivers are included on the CD that accompanied the card.On my computer, the card defaulted to LPT3 rather than LPT1. That caused a problem when I attempted to install my Laserjet 6p printer; Windows was unable to find any drivers for it. However, once I changed the card's port to LPT1 (again in Device Manager) and tried again, Win7 was able to locate the proper drivers and install them right away. It seems odd that Windows could recognize the attached printer when the port was set to LPT3, but couldn't find any drivers until the port was changed to LPT1. In any case, once that issue was sorted out, there was smooth sailing. (Possibly Windows would have installed the drivers automatically after the port setting was corrected; I didn't wait to find out the answer to that.)Before long, Windows Update offered to install newer drivers for this printer, but I'm resisting that offer since the original ones are working fine at this point. When it comes to drivers offered by Windows Update, I'm of the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" school.In conclusion, the item under review isn't quite a "plug 'n' play" device, but if you're comfortable fiddling with the above-mentioned settings, it should do the job.-----------------------UPDATE (3-20-2018): After 6.5 years, this card stopped working; it no longer appeared in Device Manager. I ordered another one, which was exactly the same model, but the drivers would not install. StarTech online chat support was helpful, but their suggestions did not work, so I returned the new card and stuck the old one back in my computer. To my surprise, the old card then showed up in Device Manager, but with a driver issue. I tried updating the driver, using the files that I had just downloaded from StarTech, and -- amazingly -- this procedure worked. I suppose that the old card needed nothing more than to be re-seated, which of course was accomplished by the card-swapping. I should have tried that before ordering the new card, which didn't work anyway. 4Works well, drivers compatible with Win 8 Installs easily, drivers work on Windows 8. The only 'gotcha' is that there's drivers for all their products on the DVD, so you have to do a bit of digging through the directories (PCIe or PCIExpress, then Parallel) and match up the chipset ID to the driver you're looking for (hint: it's OXPCIe952)After you install the card, go to DEVICE MANAGER, find the card (it'll have a yellow "!" mark next to it), update the driver as detailed above... Then close out, go back into DEVICE MANAGER, and you'll see a PORT SETTINGS tab appear for the device. It comes in as LPT3, but if you want to use a different port, you can pick it there... Lots of old programs default to LPT1, so this would be the place to change it :-) 5Works with Mach3 and Geckodrive for CNC I'm writing this review for 2 reasons:1) To let others know that this parallel port worked to run a stepper motor driven CNC machine. My desktop computer is running Windows 7 32bit with Mach3 and connects to a Geckodrive G540 through this parallel port.A couple notes *you have to be running 32bit for mach 3 to work, and you have to configure the port settings in Mach3 for it to properly send signals to this port.2) The customer support was incredible. I was having trouble getting Mach3 to send signals through the port (which turned out to be an incorrect setting that I put in). Before figuring out that the port was fine, I called Startech's customer service. I was answered by a human and spoke to a knowledgeable and helpful tech who promptly followed up over email with another driver I could try. Again, the port was never the issue, and I didn't end up needing the new driver, but I felt so grateful and relieved to get this level of support that I had to write this review. I will gladly purchase other hardware from Startech in the future! 5
