Description

Love your work, work for what you love, and change the world—all at the same time.

What matters most to you? Should you focus on earning a living, pursuing your passions, or devoting yourself to the causes that inspire you? The surprising truth is that you don’t have to choose—and that you’ll find more success if you don’t. That’s the breakthrough message of TOMS’ One for One movement. You don’t have to be rich to give back and you don’t have to retire to spend every day doing what you love. You can find profit, passion, and meaning all at once—right now.

In Start Something That Matters, Blake Mycoskie tells the story of TOMS, one of the fastest-growing shoe companies in the world, and combines it with lessons learned from such other innovative organizations as method, charity: water, FEED Projects, and TerraCycle. Blake presents the six simple keys for creating or transforming your own life and business, from discovering your core story to being resourceful without resources; from overcoming fear and doubt to incorporating giving into every aspect of your life. No matter what kind of change you’re considering, Start Something That Matters gives you the stories, ideas, and practical tips that can help you get started.

Customer Reviews

Entrepreneurship with a conscience You read a lot these days about disruption as if it were the only way to succeed, as if entrepreneurship needed to destroy to exist in a zero sum world. This book offers an alternative movement: how to build an economic activity that can actually benefit humanity not just a few at the expense of most. The book is easy to read, believable in its enthusiasm, convincing and inspiring. It is about looking at selling a story more than selling objects. It is about making a difference in the world instead of only exploiting its resources. It is about creating value by valuing others. It is strangely how to use capitalism as a tool to redistribute wealth and the power of storytelling to do good around the world. Enjoyable because it makes it look so easy, so obvious. A good read! 5Start "Giving" In the last 6-8 months I have read a lot of books on entrepreneurs who started small and then through all kinds of help, support, hard work and with some timely luck made it big. I had enjoyed reading Akio Morita's story of how Sony started and how through Sony, he paved ways for international business in Japan, which prior to Sony, was averse of doing any international business. I had read about how Michael Dell started with Dell computers from his college dorm room and then turned it into a multinational that it is now. I have read more than a few books on how Steve Jobs turned an idea into a big revolution that it is today from his home garage. All these entrepreneurs and more that I had read about had profits at the core of their business. Nothing wrong with it, after all that is what business is mainly about. Never though, had I heard of the concept of mixing a for-profit business with Charity until I read "Start Something that matters" by Blake Mycoskie.Blake Mycoskie was a born entrepreneur, at the age of 29; he had already started three different businesses and was quite content with where he was. At this stage, he decided to take a vacation and so he went to Argentina. While there, he saw these amazing local Argentine shoes called "alpargeta". They were worn by practically everyone out there and the entrepreneur in him saw a potential market for those shoes back in USA. He parked the idea at the back of his mind and continued with his vacation. While visiting some villages, he came across kids who were living their lives with no shoes at all to wear. He researched and found about all the dreadful infections they were subjected to because of the lack of shoes. Then and there, Blake decided he wanted to do something about it and that is when he came up with the idea to start "TOMS" (....). TOMS refers to "Shoes for tomorrow". The idea Blake came up with was very simple. His company would start selling "alpargeta" shoes. For every shoe sold today, TOMS would donate a pair of shoes to kids in need tomorrow. The idea was noble but at the same time very scary as mixing money and charity was not something that was done much in USA. Blake however wanted to pursue this dream and so he did.His journey was tough but in a period of "5" years after TOMS started, Blake was able to donate One Million shoes to kids in need. Blake goes all out in this book to explain and illustrate so many other such organizations who have taken to do something about the social issues around us. He goes on to explain how one can start with an idea no matter how small it is and then build on it over time and at the same time incorporate "giving" in their business strategy from the very beginning. He has given references to several tools and techniques in this book to run your start-ups in the least possible financial situation while ensuring that you are giving back to the society.Personally to me, this was a big eye opener. I was stirred emotionally on more than a few occasions while reading the book as Blake narrated several of his interactions with the kids he saw. We take a lot of things we have for granted and never think about those unlucky few, who don't have their basic needs met. I am personally pledging to ensure that I incorporate "Giving" into my actions. I hope more readers take up to this book and follow the same path.P.S: For every copy of this book sold, a book is donated to a child, so please get one!! 5Simple inspiration I like the simple, straightforward nature of this book. I like the examples of businesses he uses and the resources (blogs, books, websites, case studies) he shares. I have worked for several small businesses that have overspent and that have been focused on all the wrong things such as titles and fancy offices. I have read several inspiring business books, but I liked the simplicity of this one. Blake is pretty open about his story and aggregates a lot of what I've read in other books. He encourages you to think about how to solve the world's problems, to be charitable from the onset of your business, and to believe that profit and charity can and should coexist in a business. 4This book will change how you think about business! I just finished reading Blake's' book Start Something that Matters, and I was so engrossed in the content, I could not put it down. From cover to cover, this book is full of inspiration, business building strategies and examples of how one idea can change a life! From a corporate perspective I thoroughly appreciated Blake's description on the qualities that are essential in a team and leadership: trust, autonomy, engagement, creating champions and partnerships, and the foundation of corporate giving (in more ways than just money). From the community service perspective, I valued Blake's examples of the many ways in which an idea can help millions, and how giving creates a cycle of reciprocity. Blake stressed the importance of having a story and sharing your story, this is critical for any project, and business. His tips on creating, sharing and living your story will make a difference in how I approach my next big project.A book that will definitely make a difference in our world!Charmaine Hammond,Author, On Toby's Terms 5Good Story - Well Written - Not a How-To Book I was genuinely interested in the Tom's story and this book does a great job of telling it from the inside out.I found it to be an inspiring and well-written narrative of how the company went from idea, to start-up to iconic shoe company. It did not come off as preachy and was very practical in terms of characterizing the type of entrepenurial (sp?) spirit and tenacity necessary to stay motivated, and more importantly, motivate staff.Only thing that left me wanting more was the description of other "One-for-One" success stories -- but hey -- thats what Google is for. 4This book changed my life This book changed my life. Inspired by Mycoskie's brilliant book, I wrote Your Mark On The World. As a mid-career sabbatical, I was living in China, teaching business at South China University of Technology, and trying to decide how to spend the rest of my career. I made it a point to read several books that might help me find some direction, some focus and when I finished reading Start Something that Matters, I began to find some real clarity.Of course, Mycoskie's story begins with the story of how he started Tom's shoes. The book is worth reading just to get that story. Who wouldn't want to launch a successful, $100 million business in a space as crowded as shoes? Reading the story allows you to understand how Mycoskie's world view informs his entrepreneurship to make him a more successful leader, to say nothing of his humanitarian bona fides. The book combines interesting, personal anecdotes with sound business advice, leaving readers confident and ready to step out on their own to do something that matters. Mycoskie's style is a pleasure to read. The book is a great read for anyone interested in business or humanitarian causes. It is a quick read and you won't confuse this with your Management 101 textbook--thank heaven. It's not a soup to nuts "how to" start a business so much as a treatise that will help you find the passion to do what you've always dreamed of doing. The book perfectly executes it's goal.I absolutely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in social entrepreneurship, the fashion industry, marketing, charity or business. 5A Book to Be Inspired By. Fabulous book! Really gave me motivation to get my project Arteforelephants (a site that raises money for conservation charities through the sale of fine art) off of the ground! It gave me a ton of information in a relaxed, informal manner. If you are looking for hard core- "How to make a business plan", "How to do a cash flow analysis" type of book than look elsewhere! This book isn't that. I found the best use for this is when I feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of what I am trying to do; I can go back to this book and draw on Blake's words of wisdom and success to keep me going through the "what the heck was I thinkin'?'" times. I hope the author will experience great gratification that his work is out there, germinating a billion side projects! 5Good primer for starting socially conscious business I bought the book after reading about Tom's Shoes and being inspired to start a company based on the One for One concept that Blake has now made so famous. Book was an easy read but, because of my interest in the business model, I was hoping for a little bit more detail about the mechanics of the One for One model and how the model was implemented, which the book was a little light on. Aside from that, the book was a pretty inspirational read. I actually sent Blake an email thanking him for writing the book to express my gratitude for his inspiration. It was a light, easy read but good primer material for those interested in starting a socially conscious company. Thanks again Blake! 4Great story, fun book! Capitalism with a greater purpose I was not as familiar with the TOMS story and the meaningful proposition behind the company. This is an important business lesson. It should, hopefully, serve as a benchmark to many new endeavors to come.Highly recommended! 5In a rut read it... I heard only a small bit about TOMs. However I had just finished reading Decision Makers and this book came on my radar screen. First it is a comfortable read. It had me asking questions at the end of each chapter, in fact by the first I had bought myself a notebook to jot things down. I lead a consulting team and we focus on programmes and project which can result in the social and economic inclusion of marginlaised young persons, persons with disAbiliites and mirco entrepreneurs. I got this book and a notebook for every member of my team and I watched them during breaks reading and nodding their heads. Somehow the combination of the two books has lead to a more effective and creative team. 4
