Customer Reviews

A nice set, but will slightly deform after was wailing on stuck AR front sight pins You have seen the videos. Time to remove the pins...put the front sight on the round orange thing...whack whack...the pins are out. However, if young Hercules put your pins in at Hartford, you may be in for some frustrating whacking time. I wailed away long enough to slightly flatten the punch. Perhaps says more about hardness of Colt pins than quality of the drive set. This was a true test of the drive...held up otherwise just fine. 4Solid punch set - good buy OK this is my first punch set. I have read some reviews on other punch sets as well as this one that the metal bends when some people used it. I did not experience this at all. I used the 2nd thinnest punch from the bunch and I used it on a product that was being difficult to push out some metal pieces, so I took this punch and used a hammer....that's right...a big solid hammer and started whacking at the punch. I was scared I was going to bend it based on prior reviews. I hit it HARD like hammering a big nail into a 2X4 and it stood up to it. Not even a slight bend and any damage to it. Will I be always treating this punch set that way? probably not...it was just that one time...but hey, at least I know this is a good quality item now. Will last me a lifetime...if I don't lose it first.I would definitely recommend to buy these if you in the market for a punch set. Will not disappointCheers! 5Good product, solid set of tools Paid a little more for these after reading the reviews, and after shopping the cheaper options. These arrived in a nice box, but the plastic sleeve that they come in was torn at the bottom making it useless. I think this may have happened due to shipping. They are in the plastic sleeve, and inside the box. When they move around they likely just tore through the cheap sleeve. I needed to remove the pin holding the trigger guard on my AR-15. The 1/8th drive pin punch worked like a champ. These are really solid well built punches. The grip on them is great for traction, and making sure that you dont slip and mar the finish on your work surface. I would definitely recommend these. I will be looking for a better holder for them. 5Great customer service! I had a bought several sizes of these punches. When I used the 1/16" after a few taps it shattered in one spot. It was a tiny imperfection in the steel that caused the tempering process to make it brittle there. The other sizes had no such issue. It was the weekend, so I left a message on Starrett's answering machine explaining how it shattered. I sent back the old one for replacement from amazon. I just got a call from Starrett, and man I'm impressed, they are sending me out a new one as an apology. Even though I already have one coming from Amazon, this shows they really want the customer to be happy! They explained it was not usual to have one shatter that way, that under too much stress, it might bend, but not splinter that way. I was shocked that a company cared enough to go the extra mile this way. I will never buy another brand of precision took from any other company. I'll always check to see if Starrett has the tool first! 5these are awesome these punches are freakin tough. i used them to punch out my Springfield XD sights. anyone thats knows anything about the XDs knows those sight are next to impossible to knock out. i banged on the sights with a hammer and these punches as hard as was possible to get them out. took me about 50 whacks for the front and the rear each. i used the biggest of the 3 smaller ones and it didnt bend at all. these are supper sturdy and the grip area on them works very well. hands down the best punches ive ever used or seen. the price is not too shabby either. 5My second set. A must have. I bought a set of these punches a while back. I absolutely love them. I build guns and do gun smithing on the side and I wanted a second set to keep in my truck for when I visit friends and have to work on a firearm. The only thing is it doesn't include a 5/64 punch for the gas block roll pin but not an issue. You can always pick one up. But these punches have held up great. If not misused they will out last you. I have read about people breaking these punches and that will happen. Things break no matter how much you spend. But these are great punches and if you spend the money now you will for sure avoid the frustation. 5Great product As others have said...great product. Very solid and well constructed. I bought three different sets. Two steel (one is a set of extended drive length punches for really long pins) and a brass set (for work on guns where there's risk of doing damage if you screw up). I've already used these twice now and was very happy. I took off one star because of the packaging or case. These came in a cheap soft plastic case. It's okay, but I don't expect it will last. Plus it looks totally different. The brass ones came in a very nice nylon case that will last forever. The longer extended drive ones didn't come with a case at all. They were just in a box wrapped in paper. Seemed odd. Love to see them provide nice nylon cases for all of them! Sorry, I like to be organized with my tools. These are a little expensive compared to other brands, but worth the money in my opinion. 4Awesome Pin Punch Set Starrett is a very old manufacturer, but this is one of the cases where not improving on perfection pays off. I had been buying these punches in bulk through various tool and industrial suppliers. Most no longer are direct accounts, so I no longer have a local source that would not be ordering them retail and then marking them up MSRP+ 30% ( it really is a shame mfr do not support the traditional stocking distribution model, but I got to zag when the world zigs )My only suggestion to Starrett, is to offer a second series, with the handle portion of each punch 3"+ longer. There are times where we would do better to span a distance, and not get a hammer in so close to sensitive components, when using these inside a clients' vehicle. This punch set is the finest. As a locksmith, I use them for many tasks. The knurled handles and longer pin length before they taper to the knurled area makes them an "accept no-substitutions" item for City Lock, a Polytechnikey, LLC companyIf I only needed one or two, I would have Snap-On get them for me, but I buy 30 at a time, so really need a wholesale price. In this case, Amazon really came through. 5Used on some pin joints on Voyager class evac cybertron ... Used on some pin joints on Voyager class evac cybertron. It removed the pins perfectly. I don't use a hammer I took the pin punch on my work bench an pushed through the pinNOTE: its very important when removing pins from toys if thats what you are using it for to make sure you are not pushing from the knurled side. It typically has a star type pattern or rougher looking then the smooth side. If you do this you will loosen the joint and may even crack the hole around the pin.I can not help with regards to pins in guns or sights. I only purchased for use on toys to fix broken ones. 5Don't know why - it is the best! I am very happy to have this set.I am not a professional user. This is another wonder tool set Starrett made. I used it to take out a roller pin from the DI gas tube. In three taps, the pin came out.FYI - Earlier, I bought a set of pin punches which costed ~1/3 of this Starret set. It was bent when I just rest my rubber mallet. With that bad expereiece, I decided to buy a brand I can trust and count on. My other Starrett tools were a set of engineering squares and two straight rulers with beveled side (12" and 24").Follow-up: I found the 1/16 inch punch bent. The replacement is on its way. I might have driven it too fast or force I applied may not be straight. 5
