Customer Reviews

Great All Purpose Lens! I am NOT a professional photographer and all I wanted was a nice lens for my Nikon D3000 that had good range and clarity at reasonable price. This was money well spent! I no longer use my 55-200mm, 55-300mm or my 18-55mm. I love this lens because I never have to change it.It has all the other features I was looking for too, most importantly image stabilization. Plenty of bokeh too. The lens is heavier than my 55-300mm but there is a lot more lens compacted in. It takes awesome close up shots which I could never do with my other 2 long lenses. 5A perfect Do Everything Lens. What can I say. I now use this lens instead of taking 3 lenses with me. I does everything I ask of it. It is a bit heavier than my Sony camera body. I wind up holding it by the lens very often. My wife and I just took a trip to Europe. Like most tourist in Europe, we went in many churches, musems, and castle. Very often, I would be shooting shots too long for the camera flash to be of any use. I would set the camera to not use the flash and turn on the image stabilization. This lens would give me some incredible pictures. Some of the people with me in our tour groups using very small cameras just couldn't believe some of the pictures I could take.Earlier this year, I took two grandsons on a week long Grand Canyon raft trip. This was the perfect place also to have one lens that would do everything I wanted to do. No lens swaps. We had two rafts on this trip and I took many hand held shots of the other boat going through rapids. The image stabilization works great. 5The best price/features choice I have own this lens for 6 months and used with my Canon T2i for vacations and family activities. The lens construction is robust and high quality. The stabilizer and the HSM works fantastic. The picture quality is very good of course taking in account the typical limitations of a lens of this wide focal distance range. I have some doubts to buy the Tamron 18-270 mm instead this one but now I'm shure that this is the better choice because the HSM and picture quality. I recommend it as a very useful lens for general use. I have read some comments about the softness picture quality of this lens but it was not my case because I have taken acceptable sharp pictures in all the zoom range. I really recommend it because the price, quality, features (IS and HSM) and because at the moment Canon doesn't offer an alternative that cover all this characteristics.I have compared this lens with the Canon EFS 18-135 IS in 18 and 135 focal distance and no noticeable difference was detected. Both lens obtain sharp images. 5This is my one go-to everyday lens...really flexible I really like this lens. In fact, I bought a used version of this same lens a couple years ago after doing a bunch of online research and reading reviews, etc. I broke it on a hike. Definitely my fault not being careful, not a fault of the lens at all. I carried it literally on hundreds of miles of hikes. And really loved it. So much so that I bought a second one to replace the one that broke (this time went with a new one). It's a great inexpensive all-around lens. It's a little on the heavy side, but is worth it for the flexibility of being able to use it as a macro and a telephoto. I use mostly for landscapes... shooting nature and vistas, etc. I actually use it quite a bit in low light-- camping, campfires, etc. Never use a flash. I wish it was a little sharper when fully opened up to full telephoto, but I don't do that often anyway. 4A really nice versatile lens Ok, I am not a professional photographer, but I do take some really good pictures. I have this lens, and two prime Pentax lenses (a f2.8 200 and a 55) and use a pentax k-5. I have read numerous reviews, dpreview and other sites, and so yes, this isn't a $2,000 canon lens, but it sure isn't a cheap lens either. I have used it for closups and for sports games, mostly soccer. I reaches out really well, is light and easy to hold, and the focus is quiet and fast. (I tried the Sigma 70-200 f2.8, heavy... the Pentax DA 55-300,..slow..and this is the best of that batch. The Tameron has bad reviews for slow focus, so I didn't try that one) It shoots fairly well in low light, going down to 3.5, but....not great. Night time soccer games don't really work with this lens. But then again, is there a lens that will do it all? In the bright light of a daytime soccer game I have gotten many crisp long distance shots, usually at f8 or so, that seems the sweat spot for this lens. Also nice shots of birds in flight, and other wildlife, deer etc... that have come out very good. I highly recomend this lens at this price range I don't think you can do better. It is the lens that is on my camera all the time, except for unusual shots such as night time sports. 5An Excellent Travel Lens I purchased this to be the primary lens on my Sony SLT-A55, a necessary addition for zoom option to my collection of mostly prime lenses besides the 18-55mm kit lens. In other words, this the perfect travel lens for a DSLR when you might want to minimize carrying a number of lenses and, perhaps more importantly, changing lenses where you may not want to. This is not a lens designed for full frame DSLRs like Sony A900, but APS-C sized sensors in Sony Alpha range, and similar DSLRs from other brands. When ordering, make sure you have opted for the right brand. Consequently, the 18mm-250mm specification for zoom really means 28mm-375mm on a Sony Alpha (and up to 30mm-425mm on similar DSLRs from Canon, Nikon etc) with APS-C sensor.Based on a brief playtime with this lens after receiving it last night, I can say that it is a good product and well worth the price. I was pleasantly surprised with its ability to focus quickly and capture the details of a small airplane at significant distance. The other surprise was from being able to focus to just 1.5 feet even at maximum zoom. The maximum magnification in this setting is 1:3.4, so not quite a great macro lens, but gets the job done albeit with aperture no larger than f/6.3.The optical stabilization appears to do a good job. Since Sony Alpha comes with in-body image stabilization, one must choose to use either the in-lens OS or in-body OS. Personally, I intend to use in-lens stabilization at longer zoom, and switch to in-body OS at wider angles. The in-lens stabilization worked really well at full zoom. The only weakness might be that the lens isn't fast. But then, considering the cost, it is clearly built on a compromise. At wide angle, it is no faster than the kit lens (f/3.5), but the optical stabilization should help a little. At telephoto end, a larger aperture would have been an icing on the cake, even if it meant increasing the aperture from f/6.3 to f/5.6. If this lens were just a bit faster, I would have given it a full five stars on features instead of four.PS. Be advised that this is not a lightweight lens. It may not be lighter than even two lenses covering the range, but it offers great convenience. It also looks huge on the little body of Sony A55. 5OK Average quality pictures. Not razor sharp, but not so bad your average person notices. Lens creep. "While not quite as sharp as a better lens, but you can get a lot of different angles in fast moving activity with one lens. Not bad for the use intended. Don't use when a shorter better quality lens will do the job. 3I'm a little disapointed in this lens. Someone else wrote a review about this lens and talked about it's soft focus.I should have paid more attention. I have a the Sigma 18-200 and the 70-300 both without optical stabilization. They are both sharp on focus. The 70-300 is amazing. Anyways, I thought wow if I can have another lens like these two and get the OS feature it's gotta be great.Well not so great. MY first time out with this lens.. I saw the soft focus and cringed a little.I took some comparison shots against the other two lens I mentioned and tested all on two different camera bodies (D300s and D5100). I guess as a general purpose (no amaizing picture lens) this will be ok but I hate fuzzy pictures. I will most likely keep it but I don't know how much I will actualy use it. I know this is a lot to ask in a lens at this price point. Personaly would rather have paid more for a sharper lens. 4A Very Good Telephoto Lens for the Money Shopped, compared brand names, read others reviews, I am only an amateur hobbyist photographer who enjoys capturing Landscape, Wildlife, those exceptional Sunsets and memorable skies, as well as certain family events. I wanted something that offered me relatively close captures, while allowing those telephoto shots of Wildlife or distant Landscape, and not having to try and quickly change Lenses while out and about - sometimes in a dusty wooded area. Hence this Lens system for my Canon T2i/550 (which for an entry level DSLR) does a nice job. After Retiring this past year, funds are very tight, I would greatly love to have a little better Camera and even a better Lens than this unit - however, I found that this Lens provides good symmetry for close ups and telephoto magnification. I have not experienced the softening around the edges as some have stated in their reviews. I have however noticed that "color" rendering for some reason has changed slightly vs. using (3) different Canon factory (tm) Lenses - why I do not know, perhaps others with more techno savvy could explain. However, by adjusting Saturation, Contrast, Shutter Speed, and other settings in the Camera itself, the deeper color rendering can be achieved using this Lens. One thing I have noticed is that the Auto Focus timing can be a little bit slow vs. other Lenses. A recent example: Ducks swimming close by me, then starting to take flight, the AF was a bit slow as they started to leave the water - bursting helped capture those shots that did get focused, some shots were not.Bottom Line: From someone who is not an expert Photographer, but is learning... This Lens is well made, it does the job as advertised, it provides the overall single lens capabilities I was looking for in my type of photographing, is very competitively priced, fits the Camera well, and generally does its job well. The AF timing could be a little faster, even after ensuring that the Camera Battery is genuine Canon, fresh, and fully charged. Do not be afraid to purchase this Lens. 5Damn good for the price Used with my D7100. Decent quality. Damn good for the price. Was tough to get on for the first time. Unlike Nikor lenses, this is metal on metal so you need to elbow grease it into the body the first few times to break it in. Thought I would break something. very decent for video. lens creep was not as bad as many others say but my left hand is almost always cradling it anyway. Again, terrific for the price. Only gripe is my Nikor lenses tend to lock on subject with autofocus a fraction faster so with this I need to be more precise. Here are a few photos I took with it. 4
