Customer Reviews

Awesome ultra zoom for the money! Had this lens for few weeks now, and love it! The optical stabilization is amazing! I've shot tack sharp shots @500mm handheld at slower shutter speeds than the standard "reciprocal" (the rule of thumb where the slowest shutter speed one should use is the same as the focal length, adjusted for crop factor, in my case 1/750 as my D5300 is a 1.5 crop factor). Here's a few example shots.@400mm https://www.flickr.com/photos/mkoneeye/14826629449/@500mm https://www.flickr.com/photos/mkoneeye/14881761403/@150mm https://www.flickr.com/photos/mkoneeye/14986444657/Several reviews here complain about the size and weight of the thing...Well duh! It's a 150-500 zoom! It goes ~4 pounds, by comparison Nikons 200-400 goes ~7.5 pounds. You can't escape weight in ultra zooms. It comes with a shoulder sling, which works (I upgraded to a Black Rapid classic sling for the padding and ease of removal). Thing is, the tripod mount point on the tripod bracket is a perfect balance point, so it hangs comfortably. Some have complained about zoom hunting and noise, it's not bad. I do a lot of macro work, so I manual focus quite often, but have found I can trust the AF on this lens. Rare times it hits a different spot than I had in mind, a quick adjust on the focus ring fixes that.Another bonus, it comes with an excellent padded lens case with a shoulder strap of its own!Bottom line, you can't get an ultra zoom that can do all that this one can for anywhere near the price. If you like shooting birds, wildlife, airshows, etc. and you aren't made of money, GET THIS LENS! 5Great Value & Performance I just acquired the a new Sigma 150-500mm lens for not much more than what they go for used...Super Value...especially with case / straps accessories & 4 year warranty. I am a hobbyist and shoot with a Canon 70D. I also have a Sigma 105mm Macro and am very happy with it... so when considering a long telephoto lens.. I gravitated toward Sigma. Build quality of the 150-500mm is very good and the quality of images is excellent and surpassed my expectations. As long as you known how you will use any lens and understand its parameters you should have reasonably good results with your purchase. This was a very good choice for me and I am sure for many others...!! 5Couldn't ask for a better lens for the money I got this lens just a few days ago, and already I'm in love with it. The thing is quite heavy, and I was expecting that but it still is taking some getting used to. I tested it out in my backyard, and at 500mm I was able to get clear, crisp shots handheld. The optic stabilizer is really great because I don't want to have to use a tripod all the time.I read a lot of reviews saying the image is soft at 500mm, but so far haven't had that experience. Sure, not all of my shots come out great, but the majority of them are perfectly sharp and the colors are beautiful. I don't know if I just have a steady hand, but in my experiences with this lens, it's quite easy to get a sharp, clear shot at 500mm. The lens works perfectly and for the price, you can't go wrong with it. I actually can't believe this lens is being sold for less than a thousand dollars. It's really worth every penny. I don't know how it would be for a professional photographer, but I can speak as an amateur hobbyist, and I would absolutely recommend this lens to anyone looking for a reasonably priced 500mm lens that is more than capable of taking sharp shots with beautiful colors. The attached photo was taken handheld at 500mm. . 5A lot of lens for the money This is a great lens for wildlife photography. I have used this only for daylight photography, both handheld and tripod with excellent results. I also used it at a Twins game, and although the Twins stink, the shots did not. Fantastic resolution, even when cropped. Frankly I would put the optics of this lens against any other mid-level lens on the market today, including Nikon's consumer level products (ie 18-200DX).Watch your ISO, so you are not attempting to handhold shots at longer exposures. I upped my ISO all the way to 3200 for some handheld shots with good quality. You won't be disappointed with this unless you have a big pile of cash to spend on the upper level Nikon lenses. For the rest of us mere mortals, this will cover any and all long telephoto shots you can think of. 5AWESOME results when coupled to a T4i ! ! I am in absolute LOVE with the Sigma 500 lens as we refer to her in our household. Tired of listening to my husband's continuing "we need a telephoto lens", I sent him here on Amazon in search of the best lens in our limited price range. I was floored when he sent me the link to this lens, he assured me it was comparable to Canon lenses in the thousands of dollars but for a fraction of the cost. I gulped, but this lens is a gift to each other for our Crystal Jubilee Wedding Anniversary (our 15th). And we only live once... well in his case twice.. so I bit the bullet and ordered the lens, with overnight delivery as I had a goal in mind... I wanted this lens in time for the July 9th 2013 Cardinals baseball game. Where we had phenomenal tickets - all the way across the field in Homer's Landing. This lens is OUTSTANDING. We attached her to a Canon T4i where she did the work to take phenomenal photos. I owe her the credit - I just clicked the buttons. I've uploaded several photos into the customer photo section, be sure to check them out.A few notes:* She's HEAVY. Plan to brace yourself, and TAKE A TRIPOD.* She balances perfectly on her stand! Even when a T4i is attached.* The autofocus is SMOOTH and RAPID when attached to the T4i. I took many continuous photos for stop action pitching and hitting - remarkable photos indeed, CONSISTENTLY in focus!* The adjustment rings are stiff - this is a good thing, when you set 500mm, she'll generally remain in 500mm until you very intentionally move her to a different focal length.I rate this Sigma lens a full 5 stars in my book, where the comparable Canon lens would be far superior, I cannot anywhere near justify spending many, many times the price for the Canon lens when the Sigma is a very capable lens in this class.UPDATE: We have now added the VANGUARD GH-200 Tripod Heads pistol grip head to our camera gear. The pistol grip head is a GREAT tool when using the Sigma lens! 5Awesome lens for the price Awesome lens for the price! Even if the aperture width is high, I can still take some awesome pictures! I've only been using it for astrophotography on my EQ mount so far, but I've gotten some great results! It is a solid lens, not too heavy though, which is nice to carry around. Very nice AF, even though I almost don't use it for astrophotography. I would totally recommend it for any deep-sky and night sky photography beginner or amateur! The pictures will speak for themselves (most of them are just single exposures: Orion, the moon pics. The others: Andromeda, the comet LOVEJOY and the pinwheel galaxy are stacked and processed a bit) 5I am very glad I did make the investment on the lens I should start and say I use this on my Canon 7D original series camera. During the summer I photograph a lot of airshows in the Midwest. I wanted to get something with significantly more reach but I wanted to explore options from different vendors. I came across this lens and decided to take a chance.I am very glad I did make the investment on the lens. Autofocus was fast for me, Optical Stabilizer was pretty good too. Image quality was pretty sharp for my liking. Good lens to have if you're not looking to spend a fortune, but need that extra reach. My Canon 70-200L has been starting to stay home in favor of this lens.Pros: Great reach for a lens, good quality focus, solid construction, fast daytime autofocus.Cons: Heavy lens weighs 5lbs, some struggle with lower light focus. 5Good Lens For the Money It's a good intermediate platform between using a cheap, 75-300mm zoom combined with a 2x doubler and high-end L-series glass. It's a monster--it's heavy and fully-extended, feels like a bazooka. At 500mm you will need a tripod to get anything relatively sharp. It also requires a lot of light to get good images--especially ones with motion. You might have success shooting a relatively stationary object, landscape or animal in low light or shadow with a tripod and patience. But as it gets darker or in shadows and you add motion, all bets are off.In bright to medium light, this lens is capable of producing some very good images.Don't expect it to be a magic bullet for wildlife photography at a distance, though. There's no substitute for getting as close as possible to your subject, but this will help bridge the gap. At 100 yards, you'll be able to get near-frame-filling wildlife images (depending of the size of the animal). Further away, and you can still get a good image, though you'll need to crop it for visual interest. One other thing about this lens is that the autofocus is best described as "pedestrian" at best--especially as you go further towards the 500mm range. Keep this in mind when shooting or just flip the switch to manual mode and take charge of things all the time. At long distances, just a finger tap can spell the difference between sharp and not, so it's not a big problem to keep it in manual mode. I've lost a couple of good shots because I wasn't paying attention to the speed and accuracy autofocusing, so I rarely use it.I'm very happy with my purchase, even knowing the limitations of this fine lens. 45 Years old and still going! I purchased this lens on July 9, 2012, it's now November 2017. This has been an excellent lens for over 5 years. This lens is the "primary" lens that's been on my Canon 5D MIII all this time, I shoot wildlife, outdoors, in South Florida. I have averaged well over 50,000 shots "per year" with it for 5 years, that's a lot of pictures. Early on I purchased the rubber skin for it so the lens looks brand new after being drug through the Everglades and wetlands for all these years. The past few months I've noticed a little bit of softness in my shots but I attribute that to needing my auto-focus settings more than anything with the lens. I wish I could use the new USB mechanism for setting the focus.Over the 5 years I have recommended the lens to many of my photographer friends and have help sell at least a dozen of these and the 50-500, and 150-600 lenses and all the photographers have really loved those lenses as much as I have. I'm fortunate to have a very stable hand so most of my bird shots are hand held and the lens stabilizer has performed well, even in low light with much slower speeds that most photographers are comfortable shooting.I would purchase the lens again, well, a newer model anyway. The Sigma line has outperformed my expectations and I have very high expectations. Check out some of the shots... http:\\jmd.rocks 5Great lens at a great price. I'm very happy with this lens. The sharpness is excellent. Focus is quick and quiet. Yes, it's heavy and I ended up purchasing a monopod to use with it. I use the lens Internal image stabilization and switch off the steady shot stabilization of my Sony A77. This is a lens that performs best with a lot of light. That said, I did get a great shot of the moon, but tripod was of course a must. If you purchase this lens and are a Sony user, be sure to note the instructions state to shut off the lens stabilization prior to shutting off the camera as damage may result otherwise. This is my first Sigma lens. Based on my experience so far it won't be my last. 5
