Customer Reviews

Shure cable quality has sharply decreased I have used Shure headphones (primarily Shure SE215) for many years now. My first pair lasted about five years. Then I got a wireless pair, and that cable broke after about 10 months. Then a new wireless cable, and it broke after 6 months. Another wireless cable, plus a backup regular cable. Both have now broken. For the regular cable, the problem seems to be fraying around the linkage near to the end of the cable just before the actual headphone connector. A silver wire (that presumably keeps that area more "shapeable" so you can wrap it around your ear) broke out of it just a few months after starting to use the cable. I don't understand why the quality has gone down so much, perhaps Shure is using cheaper materials? They used to be such a great company. 1Redesigned headphone adapter plug! This new version fits into my phone's case headphone opening! My original cord did not without removing the case or using a separate extension adapter. The new smaller diameter extension fixes the only gripe I had about the original version that came with my 315's. The new cord is also about an inch longer overall. The rigid sleeve at the earpiece is the same design. Where it and the cord meet was the point of failure on my originals from flexing. The wire sheeth opened up and ended up shorting and fraying the wire. However, they lasted 4 years and at this price I really can't complain. 5OEM replacement of just OK cables I never liked this cable design, and this is just a replacement for a flaky cable -- it's the same, I think. The formable section near the ear bud seems to form easier, but it's hard to compare to a brand new cable to an old cable for things like stiffness and formability.I really wish these came in other lengths. I almost always have my phone in my front pocket, and this cable is way too long for that. I see Shure lists a part number for a 46 inch version, instead of the 64 inch version, but can't find anywhere that sells it.It also seem that Shure cable quality is going down, despite design changes that seem to be better (replaceable cables, formable wire near earbud). I used to get 2+ years out of Shure earbuds at the gym. Now, just walking the dog (much less sweat, etc.), I got 8 months out of these cables before failure. I guess replacing the cable is better than the whole headphones, but I wish I could just buy the old ones.At least I was able to see the reviews on here for the version with the microphone that people seem to hate before buying one. 3FRAUDULENT PRODUCTS PAY ATTENTION TO SELLER Pay attention to what seller you're buying from, make sure it is shure or an authorized shure seller. This is much more stiff and the cables that reinforce it have already gotten kinks and broken through the cheap plastic outer layer that almost flakes off, I've owned 3 of these wires and never had this issue. The auxiliary connector also gives a poor connection that causes my phone to either pause, play, skip, or adjust the volume as if there was an in-line controller. Total piece of junk and I would have quickly returned them if I had more time before I started traveling, now they're just a waste of money and another piece of junk in a landfill. Heavily disappointed with these. As I disconnected them to replace with real shure cables the wire fully tore out from their connectors as if it couldnt have gotten any cheaper. 1I don't know if the new model or version they are making now is any better in terms of longevity For a cable that costs as much as some headphones, it really doesn't last very long for me. I typically go through about 2 cables a year with what I'd consider moderate (non-gym) usage, they all seem to go out in the same way for me, the audio starts to go out in one ear and I have to bend the end just right to get clear sound.I did notice on the most recent cable I ordered, the design had visibly (but not functionally) changed. I don't know if the new model or version they are making now is any better in terms of longevity. 2Broken! I've ordered this cable twice now, and both times it arrived broken. It seems to work at first, but then small turns of the head when wearing it reveal that the cable is indeed broken (because the audio cuts out). The cable has the same metal wire portion that allows it to curve. However, avoid buying these here because of the damaged cables they've been shipping out. 1Poor Quality This is the 3rd cable I've gone through on my SE 315s in 5 years. The first two lasted about 2.5 years each. This particular cable was notably of much poorer construction. The earbuds would short at minimal movement right out of the package. Within two weeks the wires began to splay at several places with very minimal use. I am now filing a return. It is clear that these have been manufactured at a lower standard.EDIT: I returned the cable and re-ordered, hoping the first cable was simply a production fluke. Nope. I bought a second cable that similarly fell apart in about 2 weeks of light usage. This is a product of appallingly low quality. Unfortunately, this second time around I was out of town during the window for return. So I am stuck with this tattered, non-functional cable. Warning: DO NOT BUY!!! 1Great phones with some "replacement issues." To other reviewers that said this is identical to the original. It is not. At least not my original. There is definitely a reduction in cable grade (thickness). I started out with a pair of E4C's which failed 3x within the warranty period. The last earphone replacement was the 425s with the detachable cable and formable over-ear wire. I can't tell you how long it took to arrive at a "system" for easily slipping these earphones on and off, but I must say when the cable failed last time, it failed at the plug, not at the ear stress points and it failed beyond the 2 year warranty (2 years, 8 mos.) Congrats Shure. You finally mastered planned obsolescence.I know enough about plastics engineering to know it isn't strictly thickness that determines durability. I do like the greater flexibility of the replacement cable. It feels "more natural" in hand and is easier to untangle. I also know that any cable that is subjected to routine stress is going to routinely fail at some point. So, I got the new one yesterday. The clock starts. I'll come back in two years and eight months or at first sign of failure to let you know if this replacement is equal to, less than or superior to the part it replaced.Side note: While I was waiting for my cable replacement, I did my nightly walks with a pair of cheapie open-air Sennheisers. While I liked the greater awareness of my urban environment that the open cans give you, I really missed the clarity and depth of my 425s. So when I go out with the Shures, it's with the volume low and pretending that I'm hearing impaired. Because you are hearing impaired with a pair of noise-suppressing buds that knock at least 50% of the ambient volume out of your awareness. Stay frosty and always groove safely. 4Incredible Cable. Top Quality all the way around. Great headphone cable. Though my headphones are not SHURE, they use MMCX and these fit superbly. Here is what I love about these vs. the cheaper cable I bought prior to ordering this.1. Connectors secure the earbud firmly without detaching when I accidentally tug on the cable.2. The portion that shapes over the ear holds shape very well and can conform to the odd angle that the MMCX comes out of my earbud.3. The length allows me to get creative with routing the cable under my shirt if necessary (front pocket, back pocket, left, right, they all work.4. The cable itself seems much more durable AND more flexible than the cheaper alternative.I would highly recommend buying this over some of the cheaper alternatives. The quality is far above and beyond. 5Recently redesigned to fit phone cases better. I've ordered several of these over the years. My experience is similar to other reviewers in that they've all broken after a year or so of use the sound starts cutting out in one or more years, due to wear (or something) around the plug and/or in the over-the-ear sections. I keep buying replacements not because they're fantastic but because I know they'll fit and the price (though expensive) is relatively small compared to the cost of the earphones. However, I'm prompted to write a review to highlight that there was a recent (fairly minor) redesign that makes a big difference for me. It used to be that this cable wouldn't fit my iPhone case, so I had to keep buying short little adapter-things to connect the earphone cable to my phone. Those adapters would all break from use within a couple months (I tried about half a dozen different ones), which was frustrating. In my most recent purchase of this cable, though, Shure has removed some of the bulky plastic near the plug so that it has a thinner profile and can fit in my iPhone case! You can see the old and new plugs side-by-side in the picture. No more adapters for me! I suppose there's a chance they've tweaked the design in other ways, too, and these new ones will also last longer, but my hopes aren't high. 3
