Customer Reviews

could be a lot better so, I have purchased 3 Schlage locks, a samsung combo lock, and a mechanical combo lock. I don't think any schlage lock should be able to get 5 stars, due to their inability to use 5 digit codes or prevent brute-force. come on, it's the easiest firmware feature possible. 4 digits would be sufficient if there was some ability to detect someone brute forcing it. it would only take someone a couple hours to brute force all possible combinations. every additional 4 digit combo you add makes brute forcing even faster; better hope one of your combos does not start with a 1 and the attacker starts low and works up, otherwise it will take about 10min to break in. the only thing likely to stop someone from brute forcing is the battery life, which isn't the best, but isn't terrible.this particular model has some additional issues to drop another star off. first, the buttons have no bumps are other way to tell you're on the center. it's just a flat panel. at least the other schlages have tactile buttons. second, the buttons often double-press. they didn't debounce the buttons well enough, so about 20% of the time I have to clear the combo and press it again. there is no back light either, just a bright LED that isn't that great at illuminating the panel.features a good combo lock should have:- 5 or more button combos (most samsung locks have this)- a cooldown period if you guess wrong too many times. (most samsung locks have this)- an external 9V connection in case your battery dies (again, samsung has this)- easy to locate buttons in the dark (samsung uses a touch screen, which isn't the best)the only thing this models does well, is the battery is housed on the inside of the house, so it wont get as hot or cold, preventing possible winter freezes. the schlage models with tactile buttons house the battery outside... hope you don't have cold winters where you live. 3Well made, very simple to operate. I am a big fan of Schlage locks, have all Schlage products on all my doors. This was an upgrade in color and style.Installation was simple and the instructions were very easy to decipher. If you ever installed a lock, deadbolt etc. this is no different. This is powered by a 9 volt battery, the keypad is NOT back lit, the keys are lit up by a very bright white LED light that shines down on the numbers from above. There is a little overhang at the top that is not noticeable and that is where the LED is positioned. When you press the Schlage printing at the top that is what turns on the light. The handles come uninstalled on the posts, so depending on the orientation, left hand or right hand door the handles are mirror images of each other so a inside handle on the left hand door would by a outside handle on a right hand door. Once you know what position you need you slide on that handle. There is a release pin if you install the wrong handle by mistake. The instructions are as the photo shows, the point of the curve points down. This allows for up to 19 different 4 number codes to be programmed into the memory. Programming is very easy. The lock comes with a programming number which can be changed if you so desire. After you enter the programming number there are a few simple steps to entering the 4 digit code you want to use with the lock. Its simple to erase a code or erase them all if you so desire. The programming code is on the instruction booklet and there are decals on the inside of both sides of the door lock, so in the worst case scenario you would have to remove the lock from the door to look at the inside to get the number should you lose it.Reading some other reviews there seems to be some confusion on the battery and what happens if it goes dead.First off once the battery starts to weaken the green light that usually flashes will flash red, there will also be a slight delay in the lock unlocking from when you enter the code. So there is a visible indication of the battery getting weak and a physical indication of it taking longer to unlock the lock. Now in the even the battery happens to totally die, well there are 2 pins on the very bottom just under the handle, these 2 posts are battery jumper ports, you take a 9 volt battery and touch it to the posts, this will provide power to unlock the door. This ONLY provides power to enter the code, this does not automatically unlock the door, so someone just can't take a 9 volt battery and open the lock, they still need the code.I would not recommend having a keyless lock as my only means of entry because it is still electrical and there are no guarantees and should this fail you want to have another access into your home. This is used on my inner garage door into my home, should this lock fail I still have front door access with a key lock. I wish Schlage would have had a key in the handle as a backup on this model. Even the locksmith I took my other lock to so it would be keyed to match all my other locks was surprised this had no key to bypass the lock should the electronics fail. This does have a lock / unlock feature as well, meaning you can turn the deadbolt that the lock will remain unlocked, that you can come and go without entering a code, or you can have it in the locked position that you must enter a code each time you use it. This is a nice feature because I am in and out of my garage all the time and the idea of entering a code each and every time would not be appealing and that I can leave it unlocked works well.Overall I am very pleased with how smooth the actions is, how easy the installation was and how simple it is to enter new or delete old codes. This looks amazingly sharp against my red doors, I only wish the numbers were backlit like they have in some of the other models. 5Wish I would have purchased this a year ago! I am using this to replace a keyed Schlage doorknob on the door from the garage to the mud room. This was a breeze to install! Maybe it helped that I was replacing an existing Schlage doorknob or maybe it s just really easy to install. It took less than 10 minutes, and that included taking out the old doorknob. It was extremely easy to program a new code as well. Eliminates the need to take a key with me when I am walking the dog or fumble for a key when my hands are full. Also I can set up a separate code for our dog walker and change it if needed, without having to rekey the house. One other tip- we do not have latitude levers throughout our house. We have Schlage Plymouth knobs. The beauty of Schlage is that all levers and knobs are interchangeable. So I put the lever on the garage/keypad side (easier to open with grocery bags in hands, etc). I ordered an extra Plymouth doorknob and placed that on the interior side so it matched the rest of the knobs inside. The levers and knobs just slip on and off the assembly when you push in a small clip on the assembly. (I actually love the look and ease of the latitude lever so much though, I may just replace all the knobs in my house.) So if you were hesitant to buy because you have Schlage knobs or levers that don t match what s offered, there is a simple solution to that. 5Excellent! I installed 5 of these on my home at every entry. As I live in a wooded area, I always lock my doors. Whether I'm in the home or working in the woods, my doors are always locked. Keys were always problematic, as I would constantly lock myself out and have to wander into the woods for my "hidden" key... This now ensures I will not get locked out. I do, however, have a 9V battery stashed in my tractor in case the battery ever goes out while I'm away.Note - I had a regular handle and a deadbolt on all of my doors. I didn't like the thought of getting a decorative pull and just having the deadbolt, and hated the though of just getting the lever but no deadbolt. So I bought the Schlage Century Deadbolt AND the Century Lock. While there were no specs on the bore locations, I was hopeful that they would fit simultaneously. They fit perfectly! You couldn't slide a piece of paper between the deadbolt pad and the handle pad. I was able to code them differently for added protection, and have home caretakers personal codes that I can change/delete very easily.Very happy with these!! 5Easy to install & program This thing was a piece of cake to install, all it really requires is a couple Phillips screwdrivers and a little time. Yes the programming & default codes are printed on a label on the back of one of the pieces, but fear not, there is also the same sticker on the front of the manual, so you don't have to write anything down beforehand.I did make an oops and install one of the handles backwards, but it was very easy to fix using the little pin tool they include to pull the handle out and flip it over.I like how you don't have to press hard at all for the buttons. Often my hands are full with bags so I end up using like my pinky finger or knuckle to hit the buttons and it works just fine. Also you can push the handle down or up to open the door!Programming was very easy too, the LEDs & beeps let you know when you press a button and when you entered a good or bad code. Now the only question is how this thing will hold up over time. 5and I thought this might be a good opportunity to get a bluetooth-compatible lock that could be ... EDIT: It's broken. Twice. This should be pretty self explanatory. After more-or-less working well for a couple years, our Schlage lock has broken twice. The first time it was the actual latch hardware inside the lock. I replaced it. The second time, it seems to be something inside the lock's hardware.I've now had to break into my house far too many times. I'm looking fora replacement, anything that's not made by Schlage.Original review below:----After 10-years, the door handle between our house and garage was beginning to wear out. After a few unsuccessful repair attempts, I decided to replace it with a "smart" lock.I'm a self-admitted nerd, and I thought this might be a good opportunity to get a bluetooth-compatible lock that could be unlocked with our smartphones. But, after some research and a quick cost-benefit analysis, I decided that at least today, that would be more hassle than it's worth. So, I did a bit more research on keypad locks, and settled on the Schlange. It was a great choice.Installation and programming was straightforward. The quality of hardware is (insofar as I can tell from about a month of use) top-notch. The features I like are:* This lock completely eliminates the need for a key. There's no either/or, or re-keying to match your existing locks, because you simply can't use a key on this lock.* You can easily program a wide range of key-codes. So you could, for example, use an easy-to-remember combination that you use other places as your key-code, but give a different key-code to a house-cleaner that's stopping by while you're on vacation.* The battery is supposed to last a very long time, and warn you when it's getting low. But if you ever do have a dead battery situation, there are two cleverly concealed ports on the front of the lock that will let you "jump start" the lock with another 9-volt battery. The only thing I don't like is how short the duration of the "assist" light is. You press a button, and a little LED illuminates the keypad, but the length of the illumination is barely long enough to enter a 4-digit code. I'm sure this is to save on battery usage, but it's just not long enough.All-in-all, I'd buy this again in a second, and recommend it to my friends. 1Works most of the time but can leave you locked out with no way to over ride the latch I bought 3 of these and installed them all at the same time. The construction is solid and beautiful. Problem is I have been "Locked Out" 3 times at one of the doors even though the turn switch on the inside is in the unlocked position. Thankfully I have other doors to enter and get to the inside of the malfuntioning door. We normally don't switch the turn latch to the lock position on our house entry door from our garage. So the latch sits in the unlocked state for multiple days. After a few days of being in the same position it seems that the outside handle slips into the inoperable state (like when it's locked). The problem is that putting in the appropriate code will NOT re-engage the handle, thus you are stuck on the outside with no way of activating the handle to pull the latch out of the strike plate (locked out). During normal operation when the interior knob is switched vertically you can hear a very slight switching sound, this engages the outside handle so it can operate the latch. When switching the knob horizontal the same sound occurs which is disengaging the outside handle functionality. From the outside you have to enter the proper access code and then you will hear the switching sound whereas the exterior handle is made functional for about 3 seconds for you to open the latch. But after a few days with the knob switched vertical the exterior handle mechanism becomes disengaged. Putting in the code makes the sound but it does not engage the handle. I've been locked out many more times since originally writing this review. I will be returning this latch. Schlage has a major design flaw since the outside lock handle is not mechanically held in the operating state permanently. They must be relying on friction to hold the mechanism in the operational state after turning the inside knob to the unlock position. This could have been a good product had they built in solid mechanical holding when turning the inside turn knob. 1Bad design, didn't think on relay malfunctioning After 1 year 3 months of purchasing it, the lock's relay malfunctioned... the problem wasn't electric so I could still put my user code and the lock accepted the code but it didn't open the lock. Since the lock has no key there was no way to open it. 1Excellent fit and finish, easy install. Schlage makes great products! Just finished converting our entire house to Schlage latitude hardware. This was a final touch to a garage door. Very simple installation, took about 15 minutes. Easy programming and works exactly as the described. One thing to note that I did not know until receiving the product: the two small black button-like details at the very bottom of the keypad side of this handle are not actually buttons; but rather an emergency pair of contacts for a 9v battery if the battery inside of the handle goes completely dead. Pretty cool! We stuck a spare 9v in our garage just in case it ever comes to that scenario 5Excellent Electronic Combo Lock I now have three of these electronic combination locks. Two are on exterior doors, one interior. They are excellent. The lock is easy to install, easy to program and easy to operate. It features an LED that illuminates the keypad in the dark, but you need to know the secret button to press to turn the LED on. (You press the word "Schlage" above the keypad.)For multiple users, different combinations can be programmed in or removed. The locks have worked well for me in our extreme heat desert environment. Batteries are easy to change, but you need a small Phillips screwdriver to open the access panel. The reason to install a combination lock is so when the door closes, it is locked. This lock does this. However, if you want the door to remain unlocked, you simply turn the knob on the inside 90 degrees and the lock becomes a simple passageway latch. The lock comes in various finishes and handle styles. I chose bright chrome with a modern handle, to match my other hardware. Can install in 2-3/8" or 2-3/4" setback, 1-3/8" or 1-3/4" thick doors. Fits standard 2-1/8" hole. The keypad is easy to see and easy to operate. Overall look and feel is great. Most importantly, the lock has been very reliable. Day in, day out, hot or cold, the lock functions. Other battery-powered combo locks I've owned have failed (keypad became dicey; rapid battery failure) or had a poor design (difficult to grip and turn; keypad difficult to see and touch). This is Schlage quality -- a strong, reliable, long-life lock.Great lock. 5
