Customer Reviews

These are G adapters, NOT N adapters These adapters connect only at 54Mbps which is the wireless G data rate. If they were wireless N, they'd be connecting at 150Mbps.Unfortunately, I did not read all the reviews on this adapter before purchasing, because several other buyers have reported the 54Mbps data rate / G not N problem. To be fair, the adapters installed easily enough, and they all work well, but they are most definitely NOT N adapters as advertised. Build quality is good, the signal strength is excellent between the adapters and my new Medialink - Wireless N Router - 802.11n - 150 Mbps - 2.4 Ghz - NEW Design w/ Internal AntennaAbout the mini-CD with drivers; the ones I received have just 3 directories, for Linux, Mac and Windows. In the windows directory, there's just a single .EXE file for driver installation and a ReadMe file. The .EXE file gives the option of installing just the driver, or the driver + RALINK configuration / netork management program. The Ralink configuration software is not very intuitive so I removed it and simply installed the drivers and let Windows XP manage the connection.Anyway - the 3 adapters I bought are going back to Amazon, as I already have G adapters and wanted N adapters to replace them. Thankfully, Amazon has a very simple return process/option and I don't have to pay for return shipping. Kudos to Amazon on that. 1Great product, great performance, very fragile, poor or no technical support I had some trouble installing this on Vista first. After 3 hours of breaking my head, luckily I found a post on the internet that addressed the problem. The Zonealarm firewall is the culprit. Even if you disable it, it does not let this adapter work. You have to uninstall zonealarm firewall completely if you have it. After the uninstall the adapter started working great, right away. I later put PCtools firewall and there were no issues. In terms of performance, this adapter is really great. It found more signals than the internal adapter on another laptop. The speed is amazing and much better the internal wireless adapter on another laptop. As another person said on the post, do not install the software that came with it on a disk. It is primitive and not needed for the use of the this product. Also, the Realtek website has the latest drivers. I got better speed after I installed the latest drivers from their site. Their site is very poorly designed. You can not expect any service for this product. When I tried to reach them, their site asked me to install Skype. That is the only way to reach them. I did install skype and got a message saying their office (in Taiwan?) is closed. So, if you are not computer savvy, their is not a lot of information or help available, if you were to face some issues.Still a wonderful product with great performance for the price. But very fragile, the plastic cover came out on second day, I have to put it back.Update: 11/06/2010I would recommend having a small USB extension cable and connect this through the usb extension cable. It might sound like an hassle. But, if we connect this directly to the usb ports in the laptop, I am pretty sure that it is going to come all apart within few months or weeks. I tested with a small USB extension cable. There is absolutely no impact on the speed or connectivity when I use this product with a a small USB extension cable. 4Wireless LAN Adapter works fine with Win 7 64bit I recently bought an Acer Aspire Revo R3610 HTPC computer which comes with built-in wireless N card. Unfortunately the built-in wireless just doesn't work and can't get any signal outside of the room where our router is situated. So, I started using our old USB wireless LAN adapter, but still no luck. I can barely get two bars (with the old adapter) with a USB extension cord and hang the adapter prominently next to the monitor. I hated the setup and began looking for other adapter options. After finding this RealTek RTL8187L adapter on Amazon with mixed reviews, I thought I would give it a try. It was only about thirteen USD and I thought I could return it if it didn't work to my satisfaction.Firstly, this adapter not only gives constant 4 bars of reception, but occasionally gives all 5 bars. No complaints as far as performance goes. I have been using it only for one day. I have Windows 7 64 bit and the supplied drivers work fine. Since my computer doesn't have a CD drive, I had to first copy the CD's contents to a external disk using my laptop, but in the end it all worked.Installation wasn't very smooth. I had to open the device manager and point to different driver directories before the correct drivers were installed and adapter began working. At this time, I am a happy customer. 5Cheap, flimsy, but works... So last year I was looking for one of these wireless USB devices, and reading reviews for them was nothing but failure stories. No matter what company I looked at and no matter what price, they always seem to have some negative reviews that sound like they just got unlucky, and I don't like "betting" on expensive electronics. I needed one in a hurry, so I decided I'd go with the cheap one since the reviews were good, I figured it would at least work until I could figure out a better solution.Well, that was last year in September (2010), and I never bothered getting a new one because I still couldn't find one (even a more expensive one) that I believed would be solid.I have had this one work okay, sometimes it would seemingly randomly lose signal or go weak, etc. I'd just move it around and it seemed to fix it, so I thought it was the antenna position. As it turns out, today I found out it's broken. I haven't looked at the thing in a while, because it's in the back of the computer, but I was taking out the video card to dust it and troubleshoot some fan noise when I noticed half of a plastic shell sitting behind the case. I identified it as the wireless adapter shell, or half of it, and so I took out the adapter and noticed that indeed it had basically fallen apart from the weight of the antenna! The deal is, the design on this thing SUCKS! I don't know who "engineered" this layout, but that person really doesn't understand torque and mechanical advantage. The antenna is not supported by anything other than the plastic shell (which in my case was apparently barely held together), and the SOLDER connecting the antenna to the circuit board! So basically what happened was probably the plastic wasn't providing support, the solder eventually broke (the break looked like a cold solder too, which might have contributed), and that pushed the plastic case apart enough to make one side of the case fall off. The antenna was still connected (!!) but it was just barely, because the way it broke wedged the contacts against the board, so that's the only reason it was still working! When I used to "move it around" to fix it, I was probably just reconnecting the contacts.Anyhow, if the design they're using is still the same (they have a new picture of a different design posted actually, where the antenna is no longer on the end of the circuit board), then this might not be an issue anymore (but easily could be). But without knowledge otherwise, I would assume it is still an issue (since it's so cheap), and take it as that - a decent solution that could fail on you in a month if you're unlucky, a year or so if you're lucky. If you're wondering, I still don't know a decent "expensive" choice, but I haven't redone the research yet. Considering gambling on this again, for this price. 2Nice and cheap, nothing fancy. As some reviews mentioned trouble with Win 7, 32 and 64 bit, I wanted to write my experience.I have windows 7, 64 bit. This product was simple plug and play. Didn't need to load any of the drivers it came with, or any other drivers. Worked within seconds of plugging it in. Very easy. The product came in packaging somewhat different than shown, I am guessing they updated it and as of June 2011 the product that was delivered to me works easy, plug and play, no drivers need to be loaded. As for reception, it was just average in my experience. I replaced a 6 yr old plain Belkin networking USB that did not have an antenna, and both had 4 out of 5 bars for reception. When tested a few different times within a minute of each other on an online speed test, the Belkin actually had slightly faster download speeds, 12 mb vs 11 mb.My only negative, and its somewhat, is the USB and antenna are pretty big. Bigger than I would like, but hey, its more than worth the money.Overall, its just a cheap USB network adapter, which is what I needed. Don't expect to get a performance increase over any others. But don't expect any problems or difficulty either. 4Works Great I bought this to add wireless networking to my older desktop running XP SP3. It works perfectly! Setup was a breeze just make sure you follow the advice given by other reviewers about not installing the software drivers on the included mini-cd until prompted by the Windows new hardware wizard. Then just point the wizard to the correct OS folder on the disc and you're good to go. Don't be put off by the cheesy packaging it comes in, this thing works. The body of the usb dongle is kind of long. I didn't want it sticking out the back of my computer so I added a couple small pieces of adhesive backed velcro and positioned it on top of the desktop case using an 18" usb extension cable. I mean for $13, if it works for your setup it's a no brainer.Pros:Ridiculously CheapGreat signal strengthEasy setupFairly good constructionCons:Long body can be obtrusiveNot truly "plug 'n play" on XP (but close)Update: I see that the picture shown by Amazon is now of a different unit than I bought. The one I purchased is pictured in the customer supplied photos. I don't know if this is the same unit in a new wrapper or a completely different product. So buyer beware, some of these reviews may not be applicable. 5Great Product, Easy Installation & Can't BEAT the price! I was looking for a reasonable way to make my 2 desktops wireless. After several searches on different sites, reviews etc. I found this one to be the most reasonably priced with the best reviews. I received them in the mail within 2 days which was great.I had no problem whatsoever in installing the software etc. From a previous review on winxp I did take their advice.Am sure they will not mind me posting this to help you too. And want to thank them for posting:They quoted:This is a great product. Realtek has been for long time a great network interface card's chip provider. The chip on this device is indeed Realtek. This product provides good signal detection and seamless and stable connection. In order to achieve this, on Windows XP, DO NOT INSTALL program provided by the companion miniCD's autorun. Instead, plug the device and when Windows new hardware wizard ask for drivers use manual search. Then insert the miniCD and point to the correct directory on the CD according to your operating system. For Windows XP there's a folder named WinXP (:\WinXP). NOTE: I did not see the folder, but I installed it just the same and did not auto run the cd> Then let the hardware wizard install the device from there and it will use built-in Windows Wireless Connection Manager. This is far easier to use than vendor's software provided which is aimed at a very low control level (not for the average user). It picked up the signals all around and I have 5 bars on each computer. Have been using it for a few days and noticed that the device does get warm in use. So I would suggest that it be in an area where it can have some type of ventilation. Hoping it continues to work this great for a long time. Also when we move to a two story where the main wireless router is and the desktop will be downstairs, that it will work as great as it does now. Which I am figuring it should. For the price it is well worth it. And with Amazon's return policy I had nothing to lose. 5Form factor is the only issue As wireless adapters go, this one seems to be able to pick up and remain connected to any network I tried. It is reliable and the range is generally acceptable. I did notice that sometimes placing it in the back versus the front of the tower made a considerable difference in its reported signal strength, so it is possible that it is susceptible to shielding and/or interference from the case itself and surrounding objects. It received a very weak signal when run through a 3' USB extension cable, so be sure to plug directly into the USB port. Make sure you try a few different configurations if the signal seems unusually weak. That raises the one primary issue with this device. The boxy square shape (styling is not its strong point) and short USB plug on the end make it very awkward if not impossible to fit into the USB ports of many machines AND still have room to connect other devices alongside it. Note that on the device I received (although the picture implies they have since updated to a better design), the antenna was on the side, not the back, only further adding to the difficulty of fitting it in among other cables and USB devices. To me that is a cheap design flaw, unless they have since updated the design. Just make sure you aren't trying to squeeze it into the last remaining USB port on your computer because it probably won't fit. It also cannot be placed where your leg or other 'traffic' could bump it out of place. It also had the annoying tendency to have to be flipped upside down when the ideal configuration would have been to plug in facing the other direction. In the end, I think the price and reliability justify putting up with its limitations so long as you can work around them.Note that I purchased ten of these and ended up returning 1. After considerable time and consternation I thought there was an issue with my wireless network or computer. I swapped the adapter for an identical replacement and it worked 10x faster. Just be aware that there may be a few 'lemons' in the mix, so don't be afraid to return or exchange. 4Depending on the seller, the mileage will vary First, yes... this is a cheap chinese made product (not all chinese products are cheap), and you must be aware of that. But the main problem is that depending on who your seller is, you may get the product on the picture, or a different one. They are all WiFi adapters with antennas and higher than usual gains that will certainly improve your WiFi performance, but the actual dongle could be something quite different from the one on the picture. To test this, I ordered two of the same from different sellers, and I have two different USB WiFi adapters. The one on the picture (small antena on the side os the USB dongle, box says SkyLink brand) has a performance just slightly better than my laptop integrated adapter (and this is likely because I use an USB extension cable and the adapter is better located than the integratd antenna on the laptop screen), also, the driver disk did not work at all, the 5 CDROM drives I had available gave me reading errors. Fortunately a friend has the same adapter and was more lucky with the driver disk. Other than that, the adapter works fine and I have a consistent network connection. The other one, with a larger antenna on the top of the USB dongle and no brand, is giving much better reception in the exact same position than the previous one. With this one I am able to connect to wireless networks that were not even visible with the previous one.Only time will tell how dependable they are in the long run, but so far, they are working. Just be carfeul not to screw the antenna too tight or you will break the device. (Yes, did I mention they look, feel and are cheap... but also at a fair price, if they last only a year I still will be buying another one). 4Powerbook went from no signal to excellent I was originally going to purchase a GSKY 500mW flat-antenna WiFi adapter, which I'd purchased earlier as a gift for someone else who was having connectivity problems and which worked great. Then I saw this one for just under twelve dollars and decided to give it a try on our old Mac Titanium Powerbook G4, which was equipped with an original Airport card that seemed to be failing. Even when it was close to the router, it didn't work consistently, and in the bedroom -- separated from the router by several concrete walls -- it didn't work at all.Once we installed this adapter, we get full connectivity and speed! It also allows us to use WPA2 security on the router (the Powerbook G4 wasn't equipped to handle that before). There are some quirks, though...Finding the right driver for this adapter for the Mac wasn't difficult -- just had to search for "RT2571 driver". I installed the driver, and one surprising thing was that it doesn't work with the Airport icon. Instead, when you plug the adapter in, a proprietary menu comes up showing all the available networks. The first time you use it, you need to go to the Profiles tab, set up a new profile called Home (or whatever) and select your preferred WiFi network SSID (WiFi network name) and password. From then onward, the adapter should always look for that network and connect automatically as soon as it's plugged in.One quirk that we found is that if you allow the Powerbook to sleep with this thing plugged in, it sometimes crashes. So you need to unplug it before putting the Powerbook to sleep, and set the Energy Saver control panel to not allow sleep after X minutes. A minor inconvenience.I also tested it briefly on our MacBook Pro (late 2010) and it worked fine. Didn't test to see whether it had the same sleep problem. The build is pretty flimsy. I bought the 3-foot (1m) AmazonBasics USB 2.0 A-Male to A-Female Extension Cable to go with it, to ensure that we're handling the actual adapter less and can position it where we want it (usually hung on the wall). 5
