Just get this mic You can find tons of reviews online and videos on YouTube about this microphone so I'll keep it short and sweet.If you're going to get into podcasting, just get this microphone. Yes you could spend hundreds on another mic (and I've done that) but unless you have some very specific needs there isn't really a reason to get a different microphone. The Q2U sounds good, it's great at rejecting background noise and comes with the basics you need to get started. Unless you are going to be recording in a treated environment DO NOT get a condenser microphone, just stick to a dynamic one like the Q2U. I recommend getting a decent boom arm but that's just extra and I'd recommend that for pretty much any mic that you'll be using on a desk. Can't say how this compares to the ATR2100 since I haven't used it but aside from this being cheaper I really like the desktop tripod extender piece that as far as I can tell does not come with the ATR 2100 (it works with other desktiop tripod stands like the On-Stage one I have so I carry it with me when I do interviews in the field since the desktop tripods tend to be a bit short) so I'd say stick with this one. Also, the Q2U comes with a windscreen which I believe is missing from the 2100 pack so that's another plus.Save yourself time and money and just start with this one. You can always get a fancier mic later if you have extra money and the wisdom that comes with experience. 5Got this microphone particular for streaming on Twitch/Mixer/YouTube... Got this microphone particular for streaming on Twitch/Mixer/YouTube and I love it! I set it up with the windscreen and everything, did tests on background noise and controller button clicking, keyboard clicking and clicking as hard as possible it's very faint. If you press normally it's nonexistent. I also have 2 fans, one is a tower fan that is pretty loud on it's highest setting and it doesn't pick it up at all. Another ceiling fan that doesn't get picked up either. My room is completely untreated with relatively bare walls, and it sounds great. So if you're going to use this for streaming of any sort or podcasting, this is the best I've ever used. It's also half the price of the most popular one I've seen used for this type of content which is the Blue Yeti.The desk stand is fine as well. For the way I have it set up, I needed to get an actual boom stand. But if you're sitting at a desk where you can rest your elbows on the desk then the stand it comes with is perfect.Highly recommend this to ANYONE, but especially if you're just starting out. 5Hate the YETI, Love this SAMSON!!!!! I bought the hype about the Yeti mic. Blech. It had this weird crackling sound that was faint, but definitely there. Then I find out there are a zillion videos on YouTube on how to "deal with this." WTH? Tried them, nope, still makes noise. I watched someone do a head-to-head audio test with this Samson and the Audio Technica and was immediately struck with how RICH and resonant the Samson sounded. (And cheaper than the Yeti- double win.) Plugged it in, and it works fantastically. I love that it's USB, has a headphone jack, just simple simple simple with incredible sound. Yeti? "Bye Felicia!!" 5like it but bad usb convertor lively high tones but sibilants loud on it also. have to use compression for that. it does reject background noise good enough. using reafir plugin to remove background noise. usb convertor makes voice sound more digital and lesser quality. horrible static issue on computer startup, have to switch on and off. bought behringer 202hd audio interface, solved the static issue and delivers better sound quality than the usb interface. overall, good mic for the $50 range. but next mic will be Shure SM58 at $100 price point for clearer mids ( speaking tones), since I dont care about high tones (instruments and lively podcasts) 4Excellent and affordable choice for beginning podcasters I selected the Samson Q2U as an affordable choice for podcast interviews I was doing. There are a lot of recommendations for other mics that are several hundred dollars. That isn't in my budget!Pros: Easy set up. USB or cable connection. Both long cords so you can move things around. Works with Skype. Works with wireless headphones.Con: The only "con" I can say about this is that I don't particularly care for the stand. It's a little flimsy feeling. I appreciate that it comes with a stand, but it's not as stable as I want. but I can remedy that with a future purchase.This is a great choice if you're just starting out and are on a budget.Updated May 2018: I've used this for several podcast interviews I've done now and it's great. I'm clear and loud and the interviewer gets a great podcast recording. My son is even using it now for some music recording. 4Great sound but headphone jack setup lacking. First let me say that the recording quality of this mic and the ease of use is the best I have found for the price. I sing online Karaoke on singsnap and the mic works great. I will say that it is best to keep it in a stand and not move or bump it during use as the mic will pick up those noises. It is also sensitive to popping so I recommend a pop filter with it. I did not have an issue with other background noises but anything touching the mic can be picked up. Even transferring it from hand to hand. The headphones have decent sound but are cheaply made and I always use earbuds for it instead.That said, I will now explain the only three stars.I purchased this from a Radio Shack in August. By October I had the headphone jack issue that many have commented on here. I contacted Samson and they told me to send the, receipt, the mic and everything that came in the package back and they would repair or replace it. I was surprised that it only took 2 weeks to get it back when they had said it could be as much as 10 weeks, however the package it was returned to me in looked as if someone had run over the packing materials. They were all torn and cracked. Mine was much better when I returned it .Anyway, here it is December and the second one is starting to drop sound in the left speaker of the headphone. If I move the wire it comes back. So here is go again. Fortunately I kept the emails from my first replacement so I just sent a new email off to them and will see where it goes.I advise you to keep your receipt and box for the entire 1 year warranty. and please, if it breaks within that first year, don't just throw it away, Return it and have it replaced at least. If they get enough back with the same issue, maybe some genius there will decide they need to improve it.UPDATE: Well here it is in July and now the USB jack in the mic is doing the same thing the headphone jack did. Both are loose and the plugs must be jiggled to make connection. I finally broke down and ordered a new one from Amazon and got it in. I love this mic so much because I can hear myself as well as the music, but I wish they would come up with a better system for plugs in the mic itself. 3A MUST-HAVE for home recording!! I haven't had this long, but WOW!! This was a M A J O R score for my home studio!! My amazing singing buddy suggested I buy a dynamic mic for home recording because it works better for vocals in rooms full of reverb than condenser mics (I have a Rode condenser mic too). After this purchase, I may not need my condenser mic anymore!! For the price point, This thing is OUTSTANDING!!I found out about this mic from Podcastage on YouTube. The original dynamic mic I wanted, the Samson CS Microphone, was discontinued except for here on Amazon (where it was triple the original price), so I had to do some digging to find a good alternative. Unlike with my Zhiyun Smooth purchase, I researched before I slammed my money down on the virtual Amazon counter. After seeing many reviews, comparisons & unboxing videos, I decided it would be worth a shot. When it came in, everything I needed was inside the box. I have an interface, so I used the XLR cable instead of the USB (sidenote: I also haven't plugged my headphones into the headphone jack on the mic). As soon as I plugged it in, I did a sound check & was pleasantly surprised!! I didn't expect the mic to be so clear. I might use this mic for more than just recording if I can find a cable long enough to travel to performances with.This mic shattered my misconception about dynamic mics (which I thought all sounded the same). DEFINITELY A MUST HAVE FOR YOUR HOME STUDIO, whether for music production or podcasting. 5Awesome for podcasts My duagther have been Involved in podcasting for the last few years and have never had any of there own equipment. Well they started there own podcast and I gave them both this microphone for Christmas. They absolutely love it. it's just perfect for what there doing. it's a very middle of the road microphone for the podcasting that's still in the early years. What I mean by that is there podcasting from there local comic book store around a table and not in a professional sound room. This microphone is awesome for that. its does great and with the option of the 2 plug in's makes more versatile. The high end microphones are expensive and do a great job but in a controlled sound room, they pick up everything if not in a controlled environment. So this microphone is great for all aspects of podcasting I'd imagine it would sound even better in a sound room.Highly recommend this microphone. for the money and the how great it works its money well spent. 5Sounds great and is excellent value, but does have a quirk TL;DR: Excellent sound quality, requires some additional peripherals and you may need to adjust your speaking habits. You may experience a hardware quirk. Research how you plan to use it before buying.The microphone itself is of excellent value. When I compare the sound quality from my current recordings to past recordings with alternative microphones I've used, the Samson Q2U definitely sounds the most "professional" while being in the same price range as my two other microphones (the Blue Snowball and Antlion ModMic 5). By "professional", I describe this as my voice sounds very clear, natural and detailed (voice sounds fuller and doesn't seem like I'm speaking through a tin can), and there is virtually no background noise.My setup for the Samson Q2U is the microphone along with a 'NEEWER Adjustable Boom Arm' to hold the mic. The Q2U sports a 3.5mm audio port on the bottom. The port is a nice touch since I have two wide monitors and my desktop itself sits on the right side, while my main monitor (along with the Mic) is on the left side. It saves me the trouble of dealing with an additional long headphone cable on top of a long USB cable (for the mic).The Q2U is a dynamic microphone so it typically only picks up loud noises. Regardless, I still run it with low gain to further reduce background noise (such as mechanical keyboard pummeling and furious mouse clicking). This requires me to speak directly into the microphone in order to be picked up clearly--as a person who is naturally soft spoken and moves around a lot, I needed to project my voice more and be diligent at staying centered in front of the mic.In terms of sound quality, the Snowball and Q2U were the closest, however the Snowball, in contrast to the Q2U, is a condenser microphone and picked up a lot more background noise. Reducing the gain on the Snowball required me to move closer to it (the stand it comes with is short so I had to lean into it), and doing so also meant I had to get a pop filter. The Snowball is also heavier than the Q2U (and is top heavy because of its form factor). Placing it in front of my keyboard/mouse meant accidentally knocking it over at times. I could have use the Snowball along with a boom arm, but its form factor along with the pop filter made it a little bit too obtrusive for my taste. The Q2U also comes with a stand but is not top heavy so it is more stable.The Antlion ModMic is probably my favorite because it doesn't require a boom arm or a microphone stand that may get in your way. Unfortunately the sound quality of the modmic is marginally better than microphones you'd find on gaming headsets (I've used the Razer Carcharias and Steel Series Siberia V2). Headset microphones typically make your voice sound tinny and almost 'phone like'.My only gripe with the Samson Q2U is that there is a strange problem with the device (otherwise I'd get five stars): Upon booting up my computer, the microphone's power indicator flashes red and green rapidly and will continue doing so indefinitely. While it is flashing, the microphone is unusable--the microphone will output static. In order to address this, I have to unplug and reinsert the USB cable every time I power cycle my computer. This is a known issue with the microphone and appears to have been reported in other reviews and forum posts on the internet as well, but does not appear to have an official solution. Do note, however, that the issue seems to be present on other USB microphones as well. For reference my motherboard is an ASRock AB350 ITX motherboard. 4Awesome budget mic choice! For voice recording such as a podcast this cannot be beat for the price. I wouldn't say it sounds like a $300-$400 mic, but it really sounds good, both on USB and XLR connections, and the direct monitoring (for USB only) works perfectly. Great choice for travel, but buy a different desktop stand, a folding one if you're taking it on the road. This stand does need the height extender (unless you hunch-over the desk, or are very short!), which was a good idea but I found the threading was defective. I have the AT2005USB mic, and (although I love AT mics) this one is way better. In Windows 8.1, for USB recording I need the volume way up at 95 -- the Windows USB mic driver STINKS any later than Win 7, so that's not too surprising -- but there is pretty much zero hiss or self-noise even at that level. On XLR I also have to push the pre-amp pretty hard, but that's pretty much as expected for a dynamic mic, and again the results are good. On USB there's only 16 bit but it will do 48,000, which sounds good. I have some "better" mics but this one is my new favorite just for fun and travel, and to recommend for beginners who want to improve their sound. 5
