Customer Reviews

I must have wanted this to work badly because I typically follow my instincts and users reviews prior to purchasing anything online. I can say I was so happy to finally get this. It looked and felt well made. Boy was I wrong. First use I tried to drill a 2" X 4" piece of wood and it broke. First use on something as hard to drill as a 2x4. Epic waste of my time, money and efforts. I would strongly urge you to not to make the same mistake I have. I did contact the suppliers asking for a full refund and will update this review with their response. 1NO! NO! NO!I bought this about a year ago now for that 'occasional' need. If I remember, I only used it like two times.I remember the first time I used it, the jaws jammed up, and I had to use two pair of channel lock pliers to loosen the jaws to get my bit out of it. I dismissed that as possibly a fluke and put it back in my tool bag. Then the second time I used it, the 1/4" shaft snapped, leaving the tip jammed up in my quick release drill chuck. It took me, 'a hour' to get that stub out of there! It had to be drilled so an extractor could be used to pull it out of there! Then again, I had to use two pair of channel lock pliers to unlock those jaws! When I'm totally impressed with something, I'll take my time to write a review about it.Then, when I'm really totally disgusted with something, or discover a problem with an item, again I'll take my time to write a review.I really can't remember if in the past I had ever gone so far as to take a picture to include with a review. But I was so disgusted with this piece of junk, needing to spend 'an hour' of my time to drill it out of my drill chuck, that I spent the time to take a picture.Stay away from this junk! 1Product did not meet expectations - Customer service was excellent.I purchased this chuck as I wanted to use my impact driver to drill holes. Many times I only drill in wood or drywall and in small diameters less than 8mm (5/16") This chuck would allow me to carry one battery operated tool and do effectively two jobs. The concept is good, but upon delivery and using it to hang duct work I found that the drill I was using kept falling out of the chuck. At first I thought I just did not insert the drill correctly or did not tighten the chuck adequately. After several more tries I fond that the chuck loosened up after approx a dozen holes were drilled.I returned the item and was politely told to send it back and my shipping would be refunded.Rockwell makes some good tools and I give them credit for how professionally they handled my claim. While I cannot recommend this chuck I will buy Rockwell again if needed as they stand behind their products. Thank you Rockwell. 2Chuck is a Good Piece of Kit!I always have problems with chucked drills breaking. One drill that NEVER ceases to amaze me with its quality and ability to go and go on a single charge is my Hitachi Impact Driver. The only problem is that it only works with 1/4" hex type drill bits. I have amassed a few dozen of these hex-headed drill bits, but I have hundreds of regular shank type drill bits laying around that I would love to use with the Hitachi. If only someone made a 1/4" hex adapter with a chuck...and of course they do make such a thing! The Rockwell chuck is a well made piece of kit. It clamps firmly into the hex-head of the Hitachi with zero slop. The three jaw chuck tightens securely with even my arthritic hands due to the deep indentations molded in, and has handled down to a 1/64th drill bit I would normally have to get my Dremel out to use.The only negative to this chuck that I can even think of was that it was a little stiff right out of the package. I applied a little WD-40 to loosened it up and it has stayed loose ever since with use. Overall, a fine product easily worth the $20 I spent on it. 5I've used it 2-3 times and it has had issues ...I've used it 2-3 times and it has had issues from the start. The chuck tightens up when used and becomes impossible to loosen because the lower portion or right side in the photo is not large enough to get a solid grip on. I had to put it in the vise to get free and when doing so I could feel the plastic sleeve starting to spin on the metal interior parts. I expect it to fail the next time I have to put it in the vise to swap bits. I little more engineering with the input from an end user will get it right. 1Make drill nose-heavyI had hoped to use this chuck to replace a conventional keyed chuck on one of my older hand drills, so I wasn't especially concerned about its weight. Unfortunately, I was unable to remove the shaft from this chuck (in order to fit it directly onto the shaft of my drill motor). So, I was left with the option of using it as intended - that is, inserted via its hex shaft into the conventional keyed chuck on my drill. This works, but has two rather serious disadvantages:1) The combined weight of the original keyed chuck plus this keyless chuck approaches the weight of the drill motor, making the whole assembly *very* nose-heavy and unmanageable (especially when using only one hand), and2) The extra length of the assembly makes the drill unusable in a (surprising) number of situations.Although there is nothing *mechanically* wrong with this chuck, and it may be helpful for some specific situations, it generally isn't suitable for my needs. 4functions decently but the drill bit seems to wobble and ...functions decently but the drill bit seems to wobble and mine actually froze up on me with the drill bit attached, had to return item. Adds a lot of heft/bulk to the front of the drill instead of being incorporated as part of it 2Too heavy and cumbersome, though solidly madeI purchased this chuck along with a smaller-shanked one that only takes up to 1/4" bits. I really do prefer that one to this one. I have a cordless impact screwdriver that I really wanted to be able to use as a quick change drill too, so I purchased this and the other, since this will take a bit-size up over the other.I really, really wanted to like it, but it's just completely impractical. It's heavy, large, cumbersome. It juts out awkwardly and takes up too much space. I can't get into smaller areas with this one like I can the other. Really, I just can't see anything about this one that I prefer over the other.I'll try to get the link for that other one (I'm using the Amazon app to leave this review, and it doesn't support URL retrieval) and edit this review to add it, because I really DO like that one, and recommend it highly. 3rockwell chuck drill assemblyThis was exactly what I was looking for. It works very well with my quick release drill. I don't understand the negative reviews. I used mine to drive a 4" hole saw with no problem yesterday.12-26-12 I ran across my review of this item today and immediately remembered the other negative reviews and thought I'd include an update. I'm still very happy with the purchase. Its a handy tool and its given me no problems. 5Limited to light duty if using w/ impact driverBought this to use in my Ryobi impact driver. It's quite useful and works good with regular twist bits for pilot holes. If you have a job for boring a hole or want to use a speed bore/spade bit, it can tighten while in use to the point of needing a couple of water pump pliers to loosen the chuck enough to change/remove your bit. Might have more to do with the high torque... but it has a place and I just put up with it or use a different drill motor when the job is demanding. Update: 6 mos of diy'er usage. Got in the habit of using channel-pliers to grip the chuck when changing drill bits every time. Otherwise the rapid deceleration when releasing trigger would loosen the chuck and the bit could be flipped away to be lost. Torque finally broke the shank at a welded joint where it meets the base of the chuck. Thought about getting a new one but went a twist bit set with each bit built w/ its own 1/4" hex shank to fit into snap drive on ryobi . Still would consider buying a replacement chuck though for versatility. 2
