Customer Reviews

Works but not overly impressed I guess for $8 you shouldn't expect too much. It works fine for what it is. I took it on a business trip to "inspect" the hotel room and see what I could turn up. It was surprisingly clean but the couch -- well, I didn't want to sit on it after viewing it in black light! The light is very bright toward the center and fades quickly around the edges. This may be okay for a regular light but I found myself using the edge of the light area b/c the center was just too bright causing glare. I know - who complains about it being too bright, right? This was noted when using in pitch black at plastic surfaces that reflected a fair amount of the light. But for sheets/couches/etc this wasn't an issue. It is also neat to see your drivers license and the areas exposed by UV lighting. 3Think you got head lice? This light works great! Don't shine it in your bathroom!!!! Well, our children's school came down with lice......so if that's why you are reading this review, you're not alone! So, knowing that some critters like scorpions glow under black light we did some digging and looks like lice do too. So we ordered this light, and waited for a couple days (it actually was delivered very quickly thank goodness) with that slightly tingly itching feeling you get whenever you think you are being parasitized by creepy crawlies. I'm a biologist and insects and buggy things don't bother me that much (my wife hates them) but the thought of these vermin creeping around on my kids and in their beds just infuriates me. I have pretty advanced male pattern baldness (yay for me!) so there's a lot less landscape for these guys to get me. Anyway, I digress. The light works great, the UV beam is strong and it's a nice compact design. Runs on AAA batteries which I hate, but lights these compact almost always have AAA's. If you get this to check your kids heads be forewarned that there are a lot of other little fuzzy things like lint particles etc. that also fluoresce when hit with UV so you might freak out when you first use it. After your initial shock just settle down and start looking closely and you'll see (hopefully) that it's mostly just weird lint and fluff your kids pick up. Anyway, the kids checked out clear and we kept checking for a couple weeks until the school took care of the problem.....for now. I'm sure we'll have to deal with this again, which is why having the light is so critical, these outbreaks happen all the time unfortunately. Another word of warning, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S HOLY, don't just wander around shining this thing in your house. The stains you find will completely ruin your day...even in areas you thought were clean! 4fun for seeing what glows! I like this so far. It tends to get a bit hot when used, so I tend not to use it for very long at a time. It reveals all kinds of interesting things. I turned it on in my bathroom and saw the shape of the bath mat that the previous tenant must have used. In the kitchen, I was able to see the residue of cleaning products on the refrigerator door. My main reason for buying this was to use it with my Noodler's Bulletproof Blue Ghost invisible fountain pen ink, and it works very well for that. My only complaint so far is the overheating thing. Everything else about it is wonderful. It is powerful and effective. Here is a photo of what my Noodler's Nib Creaper pen looks like under this flashlight when filled with the special ink that was designed to glow. 4worked fine for me! This UV blacklight came in very simple packaging - molded plastic and cardboard back. It was easy to open and figure out even though it came without instructions. This light feels sturdy, not cheap at all and I have not had any problems with the light flickering. It turns on and gives me a steady light every time I have turned it on. It comes with a very short lanyard attached - I guess you can hang it on a hook if you want to have it readily accessible. It definitely won t fit around anyone s wrist.I first checked an area rug that I was pretty sure had urine stains - sure enough, I found that my dog had marked it. With the naked eye, you don t see those purple rings around the urine, but in the picture you can see the yellow where there is a splatter of urine. Time to get out the carpet shampooer! The product descriptions give suggestions such as writing and decoding secret messages with this light which sounds like it would be fun for when the kids are over. It also suggests that you can find bugs and mold. I think I d rather not know about the bugs, but the mold would be a good thing to know about. I think having this at a hotel or other places you are staying would be a good idea too if you are ocd like me. 4This light shows you the truth I bought this light to see all kinds of invisible stains and this light can find them in the dark. But anything white really stands out bright when using UV lights. I recently used this light on my car air conditioning to locate a leak using UV dye. It works great! This light is built cheaply so when loading the batteries you have to use kid gloves. It's one of those insert 3 AAA batteries into the plastic tube then insert that tube into the light. I had bad experiences with some lights from Sams club that incorporate the same loading features as this light. The batteries usually corrode or the plastic housing for the batteries crack and once that housing goes say Asta to that whole light. Its better to remove the batteries when not in use but I'm afraid that frequent removal of batteries will just crack the housing so I just leave them in. But so far the light is holding up fine and works great. Nice price too. Just be vewy vewy careful huh huh huh! 5Relieved that it wasn't a waste of money I was able to see dog urine spots on the carpet that I had no idea were there. Some of the older spots that I knew were there did not show up. I shined the light on the spot as I cleaned it and you could see it disappear. I could see how much urine splashes back out of the toilet. It was all around the base and floor around the toilet and even on the cabinet over the toilet. Close the lid when you flush (which we have done for years) and and see if you can get your man to sit down when he pees. It was disgusting. At least I know now where I need to focus on deep cleaning....or rather where he should focus on. After all it's his pee not mine. I also used the light to see how dirty my carpet was. I vacuumed in the dark with the light to see how well the vacuum worked.....not good...not good. I could see that some things were picked up but not a lot. The light only covers a small area and you have to get somewhat close to see certain things but overall it does what I want. I uploaded a couple of pictures. One of dog urine on my bathroom rug and one of urine splash from the toilet on my shelf. 4If it bleeds, we can track it!! For the price this UV black-light flashlight is worth it, i have tested it to detect blood and it works, where the naked eye cannot see this can help you see blood or any bio-fluids if this is what you are looking for. On a full charge (new batteries) it is powerful enough to track an wounded animal or anything that bleeds. Never point this into your eye it could cause damage, trust me i did it and it is very powerful. I also own a pair of those UV glasses that get dark when the sun hits them, well i noticed that you can use this to make them black like burnt looking in seconds lawlz, funny to see. So for the prize yes its worth getting but KNOW THIS!!!DOES NOT INCLUDE 3 TRIPLE A BATTERIES!!!! So you will have to get them your self, i don't know if it says it doesn't include or not. 5Intermittent, flashing display fixed Item works well enough. But you might experience an intermittent, flashing display when you shake or move the light around a bit. Here's how to fix it:1) Separate the display portion of the lamp from the center section to reveal the LCD element.2) Look inside the part that houses the LCD element. You will see inside a lightly colored aluminum round ring with two very small holes facing you. This is a retainer ring that tightens down the LCD element to create a solid electrical connection.3) Get two finishing nails. Use these nails to rotate the ring clockwise by inserting the nails into the two little holes facing you. Rotate the ring until it is snug.Voila! 4Which is a pretty basic requirement for a flashlight When it arrived, it did not work. Which is a pretty basic requirement for a flashlight. Upon further inspection, I realized the wire connections to the battery were poorly designed and not making contact with the battery. So I got out a pair of needlenose pliers and made some adjustments. Success; I got the flashlight to work. However, once I experimented with it and some white materials in a dark room it was clear this isn't a genuine UV light. It's just a purple LED.In sum: if you want a functioning UV light, don't buy this. 1Already dying after second use; doesn't work on tomato hornworms This flashlight is a disappointment for two reasons:1) I bought it specifically for the purpose of detecting tomato hornworms on my tomato plants. Hornworms glow a gentle green color under UV light, but nothing like that happened with this flashlight. How do I know, i.e., supposing there were just no hornworms to be found? I actually did manage to find a single hornworm while using this flashlight, but it was by chance---it certainly didn't fluoresce green as it was supposed to. I just got lucky after a LONG time of searching my plants for hornworms.2) Even setting aside the hornworm issue, this flashlight started dying on me after the SECOND use. I only bought this thing a couple of weeks ago at the most, and I'm frustrated that it's already giving out on me. During its first use, I couldn't have used it any longer than ten or fifteen minutes tops, and a good week or so intervened between that initial use and my using it again tonight. And I didn't even get that great a use out of it tonight; just a couple of minutes into my hornworm hunt and the light was all but extinguishing.Bottom line: Save your money and buy something better. 1
