Customer Reviews

Smashed Cable Sleeve It did not work for me - it wouldn't make a clean cut through the steel wrapped cable sleeve. It smashed the sleeve before cutting. I found that it was no better than a cheap cable cutter from Harbor Fright. After using a cheap cutter, use a sander running slow with 60 or so grit abrasive to grind the end down clean - keep dipping the end in water to keep it from getting hot and melting the plastic. 1Not quite as good as the reviews would indicate. The tool I received doesn't quite live up to the glowing reviews. I got a few clean cuts at first but then it started getting tougher to get a good clean cut. I thought it may have been my technique or perhaps the product that I was cutting but after cutting different brand bike cables and housings, fast slow etc.I still found the results less than satisfactory. 2Not as great as other Park tools Park tools are always very expensive, and usually that's ok because they are the best quality bike tools available. The cable cutter though, is just OK. It cuts cables fine, but it does not cut through them like butter, which I would expect from Park. It felt kind of difficult to cut and wonder how long it will make clean cuts over time. I also used this to cut housing, and like most cutters, it smashed the metal insides of the housing, and did not leave a clean cut. I have a feeling this tool's sharpness will not last very long, and as such, am not rating it higher. 3Good for cable, housing not so much I have 30 year old Park tools that are still going strong, the newer stuff is not as good. Ok cutters. I mainly use them for cutting cable and it does produce a clean non frayed end. They are not so great at cutting housing, frequently leaving a sharp protruding edge or deforming the wrapping. Sliding an old piece of cable into the housing before you cut helps keep the housing shape intact. Even so it usually takes 2-3 cuts to get an acceptable one clean enough to finish with a file, so I always start with the housing a little longer than I ultimately need. A Dremel tool with a cutoff disk often does a better job. 3No better than cutting pliers, which you probably already have Description says "clean cut", but it is no better, than cutting pliers. In fact, I'd say it's worse, considering the price. I'm not sure which part should be clean after you cut with these, but while working with Shimano brake cables I found myself always finishing the cut with proper cutting pliers and a file. Everything was messed up, starting from the spiral metal housing that was bent and finishing with the outer plastic/rubber coating.I ain't no bike expert and not sure how professional cable cutting tool should look like, but these use scissors design with offset blades and that is what makes it bend the cable first, rather than cut. If you use regular cutting pliers - it will squeeze the cable before cutting, which maybe not good, but from my experience is no worse either. Actually I find pliers cutting brake cable long before it would experience any deformation and you can get decent quality made in USA cutting pliers for half of the price. 2Great cutters so far So far so good! I've heard most cable cutters work well at first, but only the good quality ones will continue to work for the long run. I have used these for several repairs and they work well so far. They feel good in the hand and give you a lot of leverage. They cut cables cleanly; I haven't had any issues with squished outers or frayed inners. Hopefully they always work this good. Also comes with instructions on how to adjust them when they begin to wear. 5Not as expected, If you want a clean cut you would need to file housing end after using this tool. Received new and test cut new 4mm Jagwire shift housing, Each cut left 3 or 4 strands of wire about 3mm longer, And tore plastic covering on an angle. I cut square straight into housing, Results looked as if I had cut on a 45 degree angle.I also tried a test cut on new Jagwire 5mm brake housing, The cut was a little better but folded the coiled steel over the cable hole. The end would need to be filed off flat. If you have ever seen the end on a factory cut housing, You can clearly see it was cut with a disc metal cutter. Very disappointed in this tool, I will go back to using my Dremel with a thin cut off disc. 2Good Cutters I have used these cutters many times now and they work great cutting brake or shift cable giving clean cuts every time. I took away 1 star because I don't always get perfect square cuts when cutting the cable housing. You have to be sure you are holding the housing perfectly square to the cutter to get a good cut. I have used other, cheaper cutters that cut the housing near perfect each time without trying. I figured for a Parks Tool it would be a little better at cutting the cable housing. 4Park Tool - A Cut Below The Park Tool Cable cutters appear to be well made and comfortable in the hand, performance has been an entirely different experience.I used the cutter a few times one afternoon and found that after a few cuts it would not cut stainless control cable without leaving several strands bent and uncut, it absolutely refused to produce a clean usable cable end. I tightened the cutters, lubricated the pivot and still could not obtain a clean cut with this tool. In frustration and disgust I threw the Park Tool Cutters in the garbage, I didn't even bother returning this inferior offshore product to Amazon. I have now purchased a Felco C7 cable cutter (Made In Switzerland) and have been very satisfied with it's ability to make a clean cut every time. Do not bother with the inferior Chinese made Park Tool, spend the extra dollars on Swiss quality Felco cutters, you won't be disappointed and will have a tool that performs it's function without issues . 1A quality tool that gets the job done. This tool gets the job done. I found, in my use, that its size can make using it a little bit cumbersome. I got done what I needed to get done, and the tool does a good job of cutting cables and housing. Its size, for my use, made it a bit tricky to get the tool to where it needed to be to cut the cable once I had gotten my cable in place and clamped down on my brakes. I got it to work, and it worked great in cutting the cable. No splaying of the cable and no errant long stragglers after cutting, all strands were cut nice and neat. This tool has the added feature of having two sizes of crimpers to crimp down cable end caps. Both crimpers are perfectly sized so there is no worry about over compressing the crimping end caps, causing over crushing of the end caps or cables. An added point about cutting housing. I cut high quality Jagwire housing. Even then after cutting you must take care to clear the cut end. Meaning you have to file away the metal wrap surround of the housing, from the pinched cut end, and ream out the compression inherent in cutting housing so you end up with a clean open round end. Cleaning up your cut end will make all the difference. 4
