Keep Your iMac Cool Without the Fan Roar I installed a Solid State drive in my 2012 iMac and used this to allow automatic control of the cooling fans. Apple had the fan controls linked to a sensor in their old drive and when that drive is removed the fans go on full speed unless you do something to control them. Not the experience I want to live with so this sensor attaches in-line and sticks to the new drive to determine temperature. It works perfectly and is much better than installing an app which allows "you" to control fans speed, again not what I wanted. The sensor is easy to install, plug it into the drive cable then plug drive cable into drive, then stick sensor onto drive. If you skilled or brave enough to open the iMac you certainly will not have any problem with this. However, I highly recommend going to Other World Computing's (OWC) web site and reviewing their installation guides, they are very good. The only down side is this sensor is little pricey but well made and currently appears to be the only item I could find to do this job. 5Works great, helps save money! I had a failing 1TB hard drive in my MAC and the local MAC repair shop quoted $400+ for a new "Apple" certified drive. Using this adapter I was able to buy a standard Seagate 2TB drive twice the capacity currently in my machine for less than $80. Total repair including buying a tool kit to work on my MAC was under $200.This is definitely the way to go if you're comfortable tearing into your MAC. I was surprised and pleased at how easy it was to perform the repair. 5Easy to install! I purchased this cable to ensure that the cooling fan in my iMac 27" mid-2011 would work properly with my new SSD. I've had the new components installed for about a day now and everything seems to be working as expected.My only criticism related to this unit relates to the video instructions on the OWC website. From what I could tell the videos are outdated and related to an older version of the cable. This version does not require removing screws and disconnecting several connectors to raise the logic board and replace the thermal sensing cable. To install this cable I simply joined it to the existing thermal sensing cable and placed the sensor on the SSD with the included self adhesive. Overall, this version made installing a new drive in my iMac much simpler than expected. 4... to a larger hard drive or an SSD very easy. Without this you will need to figure out ... This product works as described and makes upgraded to a larger hard drive or an SSD very easy. Without this you will need to figure out another solution as the drives that Apple shipped in 2009-2011 had specific firmware that used some the of drives pins (reserved for jumpers) to supply the drives temperature to the computer. Further complicating the issue is that Apple used (3) different drives during those years and each had it's own proprietary temperature sensor. All that said your choices are to buy a drive from Apple ($$$) or buy this and the drive of your choice. I upgraded a 2010 iMac to an SSHD and a 2011 iMac to an SSD and use this product. Keep in mind the sensors are model year specific, but just make sure you get the one that will work with your specific iMac.Although it is not mentioned in the instructions there may be some replacement drives for which you cannot attach the temperature gauge directly on the center of the drives spindle. I tried mine there and when I put the circuit board back the computer kept shutting off and locking up. After some troubleshooting I figured out it was a clearance issue and moved the sensor to one of the recessed areas next to the drive spindle and that solved the clearance problem. I would recommend an SSD if you are upgrading any Mac as it will perform noticeably faster and extends it useful life. If you need a high capacity (1/2/4 TB) drive and the equivalent SSD is too expensive or is not made go with an SSHD. 5Works Like a Charm, But Could Use Installation Instructions I used this to replace a 2011 iMac's hard drive with a Solid State Drive. Without it, a 2011 (and later?) iMac will run its hard disk cooling fan at high speed all the time, because those iMacs depend on proprietary firmware in their OEM hard drives to provide temperature readouts to the fan control system.No installation instructions are provided, and for some reason, it's quite difficult to find either prose or video instructions for replacing an iMac hard drive with an SSD. (All the ones I could find, including the one linked to the seller's web page for this sensor, are for adding an SSD as a second drive in an iMac.) I ended up using one of those videos to direct me to the point of getting the hard drive out; from there, correct installation isn't hard to figure out. But be warned that if you're going to open up an iMac, you'd better be pretty handy at fixing laptops and all-in-one desktops to begin with, and good at following online instructions and videos, or else you're best off leaving this job to a pro. Macs may be easy to use, but they aren't so easy to fix!Note that the manufacturer of this product, OWC, stands behind their products like a champ, and its support staff know Mac products very well. 5Awesome Kit! Make sure you fully research what's involved! I've purchased OWC products in the past and have always been pleased. This kit gives you all of the tools to replace the original HDD in the iMac. The cable shown in the stock photo must be an earlier version because I received a black cable that looks cosmetically different, but I assume it functions the same.Now, this job could be easier if you had the following things that aren't included:-An anti-static wrist band and/or anti-static mat.-A head lamp or really good lighting.-Some latex gloves to help you prevent getting fingerprints on the LED and/or monitor glass when handling them.-Maybe a second person when removing/installing the LED. I was able to do it solo, but I have done jobs like this before.-A replacement 3.5" HDD or 2.5" SSD, which is a given. If you buy an SSD, ensure it has a Sandforce Controller so you don't have to bother with enabling TRIM (Yosemite has made that tough). All OWC SSDs have a Sandforce Controller, but some other SSDs brands out there do.-If you're installing a 2.5" drive, then you'll need a 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Converter Bracket. I got an AdaptaDrive on Amazon, although any quality bracket could work.-A plan for installing OS X and migrating your data from your old HDD. I think buying an external drive enclosure is the easiest and most practical approach. If you're installing a 2.5" drive, then ideally you'd want to buy an enclosure that can adapt to both 2.5" and 3.5" sizes. An external enclosure allows you to format/partition your new drive and install OS X before the drive upgrade. In addition, it helps you migrate the data from the external "old" drive to the newly upgraded Internal drive post installation. Also, you can continue to use your old drive in its enclosure for more disk space, a Time Machine backup, etc.-A device running the OWC YouTube tutorial that breaks down the process. I had a laptop running the video and just paused it at each step. The video is really well-done and comprehensive.All in all, the install is tough, but not nearly as bad as the SSD Upgrade Kit process. That adds a secondary SSD behind the DVD, which is significantly more involved. This upgrade process was shorter and much easier. I'd definitely recommend this product and upgrade!PS. I uploaded images of how everything looks when assembled prior to reassembling the LED. I figured it might help to see an actual install with an SSD. 5Works great with SSD install in 2011 iMac Works just as described. Very easy install. Stuck the sensor on the ssd right where instructed and I have no fan issues. My iMac runs silently now and faster than it ever was. No more thoughts of buying a new computer due to age and slow speed. Total cost with ssd, mount and this adapter was $130. Well worth it. Swapping the old drive out was way easier than adding a second drive. Less to take apart inside. The lcd panel is very easy to remove. Once that is out you have full access to the hard drive. This also gave me a chance to clean out all of the dust inside the computer. I was amazed out filthy it was inside. Although it was 7 years of dust collected. I should be able to get several more years of use from this computer now. 5Works in my 2011 iMac 21.5" Purchased for a SSD installation in my 2011 iMac 21.5". I replaced the original magnetic drive with the SSD, which did need a converter bracket to go from 2.5" to 3.5" as the bay expects. The OWC site and installation video series didn't really specify the need for a bracket, so I bought one just in case and did end up needing it. The thermal cable was easy enough to install, but getting it to set under the iMac's components was a bit tricky and time-consuming. I ended up sliding it carefully under the SSD bracket where there seemed to be enough space. Fiddling with this cable to get it situated took a long time in the overall process. Otherwise, it was easy to make the connections and apply the thermal sensor. While the cable is designed to keep the system fans from running constantly, it seems overly expensive for a SATA cable. While it was necessary evil for the drive temperature monitoring, I think it was rather expensive and essentially negated the great deal I got on a 480GB SSD drive to upgrade my 2011 Mac. I understand it is an Apple design issue to require the cable, I just can't understand why the cable is as costly as it is. 5The right tools for the job The tools included in this kit were just fine for doing a hard drive replacement. I took it easy on the screwdrivers, knowing that they might strip easily, and they did just fine. Just go slow and easy, with a steady hand (not too much coffee, hah), and take your time when handling the small, fragile-looking connectors. It actually goes pretty quickly.I found the video easy enough. I don't think Amazon will allow a link, but if you google "owc imac 2011 hard drive upgrade", the first search result should be the right page. That will show you the video for the hard drive replacement, vs. adding a second drive.As recommended in the other reviews, you'll need to get a 2.5" to 3.5" bracket, if you're putting in a 2.5" drive such as an SSD. This one worked fine.NewerTech AdaptaDrive 2.5" to 3.5" Drive Converter BracketWhat I found during my installation:- They warn you in the video not to smudge the video display, saying that it's hard to clean. I washed my hands before doing the install, was careful, and still smudged the display. Sheesh. But the cleaning cloth provided in this kit was perfect for removing the smudge... so it wasn't a big deal.- You may want to put in a new CMOS battery (2032 type) while you have the iMac opened up, as this is a 6 year old computer. I wish that I'd known about that ahead of time.- When you start up the iMac with the newly installed drive, the computer will probably pause with a white screen for 30 seconds before booting. It's looking for a startup disk. To remove this delay, go into System Preferences, Startup Disk, and tell it to use the new drive.As for the replacement drive, if you're curious, I went with this one.Samsung 850 EVO 1TB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-75E1T0B/AM)The price is really jumpy on this item, and maybe for all of the SSD drives. I waited for the price to drop before I ordered it. The "Honey" extension to Amazon is handy for this (google "amazon honey"), or just keep an eye on the item for a few weeks. 5This didn t work for me and it cost me a lot to find that out. I was able to install the replacement drive in my mid-2011 27 iMac with out significant problems. However after reassembly, the display no longer worked. At first I thought maybe one of the 4 cables was not seated properly. In attempting to check the cables, I had various disasters. Damaged cables and connectors when the LCD case leaned forward and the LCD shifted and damaged both cables and connectors. I finally got all that fixed, replaced a cracked glass cover. It didn t start working until I reinstalled the original hard drive. So my feeling is that the adapter was the problem. I am going to leave it that way because I am not going inside that iMac again. 1
