Customer Reviews

TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY - DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER PURCHASING Would give 0 stars if possible. Electricians took hours to try to get it to work as a wired unit but never did. Phantom rings scaring us in the middle of the night and rings whenever we use our car remote entry. Randomly works when you push the button. Tech support said to purchse a wireless doorbell- the actuall pushbutton- but it got terrible reviews including setting it off when you use your care remote and with a distance of 25-27 feet only. Can't return as was installed after our rehab was done which took longer than anticipated. Not spending one more cent on Nutone and especially anything wireless by them. All the great technology out there and this wired/wireless unit is a total failure- what a waste of money. 1Best electronic door chime I have seen Comes with 6 pre-installed MP3 chime sounds that have really good quality recorded sound (a welcome change from the cheesy MIDI-like sounds of other electronic chimes). My favorite is Song 6 which is the conventional Winchester Chimes. You can easily add you own MP3 sounds by connecting the unit to your PC using a supplied USB cable (Type-A to Mini-B), and copying files to the "new drive letter" that appears.Easy to hook up: just connect the "Front" and "Common" wire, or if you also have a back door you can connect its "Back" and "Common" wires also. No need to hook both "Transformer" wires like some other chimes (e.g., GE models).Requires a 16V transformer (sold separately) ... my house had a pre-installed 20V transformer, so I bought the Nutone 16V transformer to replace it.This kit also does not come with doorbell buttons, if you need those (or like I did, want to upgrade), then you need to buy those separately. I found the Heath HX-301-PB to be a great accompaniment to this Nutone electronic chime. The chime box can be mounted either in a horizontal ("landscape") or vertical ("portrait") orientation as suits you. In addition, the curved white plastic front cover can be removed and you can put your own chime cover in its place (for example, if you have or want to get an old-timey wooden-slat style cover ... there are some nice ones on eBay from wood crafters). This door chime can also work with wireless doorbell buttons (sold separately), but I only hooked it up in the wired configuration, so I can't tell you how well the wireless operates. 5Complications No matter how simple it was to connect, It would not work. I wired it to an existing xformer and a new door button, the wiring is a very a simple straight forward job, done it many times before, 4 wire and a diode.... but it woun't work, I tried it with batteries and manually activation, it worked perfect, downloaded several tunes to it, no problems there either.I can not return it because I modified the cover to let the speaker be louder (that was my original requirement, needed a louder door bell)... so I am stuck putting the old one back on the wall. I will dissect this thing and update my review unless someone thinks of a solution. 3Fixed "Ghost Ringing" - not a bad unit once you correct for design problems As mentioned here by multiple other reviewers, I was getting random doorbell activations whenever someone used their remote for their vehicle. It was somewhat acceptable/funny until one of the neighbors got a new job and now unlocks his truck at 3AM. I finally put on my EMC/EMI hat and think I have fixed the issue. The core problem is that the input filtering (or lack there of) on the wire side of this unit must be terrible. Any wiring that you have in your home that runs to the door or power transformer acts like a big antenna that receives the transmission from your car's key fob and directs it into the doorbell. This "common mode" noise is occasionally strong enough to trigger whatever circuit they have inside that is looking for the bell switch contact closure. A simple clamp-on ferrite (I used a fair-rite 0443164251 from DigiKey - about $2) seems to squelch the noise and has eliminated the ghost ringing - just clamp it over all of the wires that go to the the 3 wire terminal block on the unit such as I have done in the attached image. Also - I'm not sure what the deal with that Diode is - it seems almost like an after though meant to correct for a design error in the product. I couldn't come up with a reason to try and shove it behind one of the door switches (as they have noted in the installation instructions) so I also have it wired in right at the unit. Nutone - I design this kinda stuff for a living - feel free to get in touch if you'd like a consult in designing your next prevent these sorts of issues..... 4Great Doorbell, load and play any tune, sound, etc. that you want. I bought this unit because it is the only one I could find that could use custom .mp3 files. Some of the other reviews discussed volume level. This unit has a small speaker, it is powered by (3) D batteries. It has three volume levels. The highest setting works about as good as you're going to get out of the speaker. In addition, as mentioned in other reviews the cover does reduce the volume about 10% to 20%. I didn't find it to be a problem. The doorbell transformer serves to trigger the unit and light the door bell switches if you have them. Be sure to use the diode and follow the directions on the wiring. The unit includes a USB cable and you can plug it into your computer and download just about any .mp3 file you want to it. There is about 100 megs. of memory so you can put about 15 full length .mp3 songs on it. There are plenty of software programs out there to customize your music, sounds, or whatever you want. I used a popular program that starts with A, with the program you can edit for length, effect, etc. Just a note. The unit lets you toggle through four different play lengths of up to 20 seconds. or the whole song. When you preview on the unit with the selection for the whole song it will only play about 30 seconds; however, the full song will play if the button is pushed. The unit plays voice pretty good so don't feel like you are limited to basic melodies or bells. I installed a selection of songs that I like. Plus, you can change up the line up for the holidays. You can select different songs for front and back door. Or in my case front door, and an i/r beam I put up at my front gate to let me know when people drive on the property.Bottom line there isn't another unit out there that will let you do what this one does. My wife loves it!! 5Ghost rings and incompatible with the Nest Hello Bought from warehouse and appeared to be good. Installed with old doorbell (the push button one) and loved it. I had the doorbell playing all sorts of songs and sounds that were unique. Then we had our house painted so lots of people coming and going on the project - the doorbell started ringing when nobody was there. As others have said - ghost rings. Luckily I never had any ghost rings in the middle of the night but it was a bit unnerving. The last straw was when I upgraded to the Nest Hello. The Nest Hello and this doorbell are incompatible due to the diode that is used on this unit to keep the doorbell powered on - when I'd remove the diode the Hello would work. When the diode was installed the doorbell worked but the Hello camera would not work.Might work great for someone that lives out of the city where there is no electrical noise (i.e. key fobs, etc) to falsely trigger this unit or for people without advanced doorbells. 2Good for most typical installs... Seems very good all around, but I have some thoughts about the install. The unit works either with wireless buttons (not included, purchase separately) on batteries (D size), or wired. If you are using it wired, it requires installing a diode (included) across your doorbell pushbutton (existing or separately purchased). You must have a 16VAC (not DC or other voltages) doorbell system for this to work. The diode allows half-wave power to reach the LA600WH, powering its logic circuits; pushing the doorbell button bypasses the diode, delivering full-wave power, which the logic circuit detects and causes the unit to play whatever sound is programmed. I happen to have a three-level home, with door chime units on each level, wired in parallel, so the front door button rings all three chime units at once, so you can hear the doorbell clearly on every level. I was going to install this unit on the main level for better appearance and more sound choices, but the diode requirement causes the other door chimes on the circuit to be powered at all times, which would quickly lead to their over-heating and failure. My only alternative is to go to the wireless configuration, which I can't/won't, because the other chime units aren't wireless and replacing them with two more of these units seems a waste of money.I'm a techie, so I can engineer a workaround, but if you're not, understand that this unit is really built for the three simplest configurations of door chimes in your home: (1) wireless pushbutton(s) with this unit in wireless mode running on batteries (requiring periodic replacement); (2) one pushbutton hard wired to this one chime unit alone; (3) two pushbuttons, one for the front door and one for another (rear? side? diode goes only on front door button) door, hard wired to this one chime unit alone. Also, because of the diode requirement, the install is a little bit (just a little) more complicated than just hooking the thing up where your old unit may have been--read and follow the directions carefully. The diode provided (1N4002) is probably adequate, but be aware that if the chime stops working (or sounds continuously), the diode is a likely point of failure and you'll need to source a replacement (DigiKey, Jameco, etc.). If you have a lighted pushbutton, it will be less bright because of the diode.Sorry if this is a little complicated. I think it's a fine product that will work for most people, I just happen to have an unusual installation case that will take a little more work. I wish NuTone had provided a contact closure while sound was playing, as this would make even my odd install easy to handle with this device. 4Great overall electronic chime. Some tweeks to be perfect but very happy, worked great with my Ring Doorbell Great overall electronic chime. Some tweeks to be perfect but very happy, worked great with my Ring DoorbellPros: Easy to install, I had an existing wired mechanical doorbell. Was able to pull the existing off the wall, unhook the three wires, push them into this doorbell and screw it to the wall. Loading songs is as easy as plugging it into your computer and moving the MP3s to the 'drive' that appears. I was very happy with the sound quality considering this is a doorbell. There is slight muffle due to the cover, but beat my expectations. There is plenty of room under the cover for the wires to hide and I also stored the USB cable. The volume/song/length controls are very easy to use.Cons: When you install it to the wall, you are attaching the drive as well. So, if you want to add/change the songs you have loaded you have to either take it off the wall, or grab a laptop and hold it up while plugging in the other end to the doorbell. They should have made the Flash memory removable so you could take it to your computer. There are only 3 volume levels, and the lowest is still louder than I was hoping for. 4LOOKING FOR TUNE INSTRUCTIONS.....HERE IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND THEM I have some key points to inform you about.First, in order to add any MP3s you can NOT have the batteries installed. After you connect the chime, via USB cable, to your computer, do NOT remove any of the found tunes already in the chime. If you do remove any, don't expect ANY tunes to play, even the ones you add.To get the best sound out of any MP3 that you are going to ADD to the chime I would advise to try and reduce the highs in the tune by using a sound editor such as Wavepad, etc. After you're done uploading your tunes, disconnect the USB cable and insert the batteries. The batteries are necessary in wired and wireless configurations. The speaker is the only down side of the unit, thus having to cut out the high-frequencies from your tunes. If the speaker was replaced with a higher quality, I would have given it 5-Stars without question.FYI, if you find your added tune is still not loud enough after adjusting the VOL button on the chime, then re-edit the tune boosting the volume in the sound editor.I am currently using it in a wired configuration and my added tune is about 30 seconds in length and seems to be working out just fine.I think after the warranty period ends, I will add a quality speaker to the chime. 4Pretty Cool but... Firstly this thing is pretty sweet. Uploading any MP3 is awesome. There are a couple of (minor) issues. First is that it is kinda quiet. Choose a good mounting location. Second and more annoying one: there is a short list of wireless buttons which work with this and none of them are made anymore. You can get them from a few places including Amazon but make sure you are either using a wired system or are also ordering a wireless button before you buy this thing. 4
